  • The rise of Hip-Hop in the 80’s set the stage for Black Models to rip the runway and turn the fashion industry on its head. The absolute icon that is Karen Alexander shares her incredible triumphs of forging a path that would leave a lasting legacy on the culture and fashion industry. We look at how music became entwined with fashion and how the camaraderie between Black models set the foundation for the Black Girls Coalition with Bethanne Hardison and Iman at the helm.
Supreme Models is a 6-part documentary. New episodes premiere Mondays.

Vogue THANK YOU for this series. As a teen in the mid 1980s and early 1990s I watched Style with Elsa Klensch religiously every Saturday morning/afternoon. I read all the fashion magazines. I even went to an Ebony Fair fashion show. I loved all of the black models and used to follow their careers and all of the fashion shows that featured them prominently. Fashion designers like Patrick Kelly, Azzadine Alaia were good to black models too.

Hello Vogue... It is My Dream of Gracing your Cover Magazine. I'm a Model and a WOC ... I know I have what it takes to appear on your Cover- However, it's a Matter of being given an "Opportunity" to be put on your Cover. I hope one day in the near future it will happen. Not sure if you will see this comment, but it doesn't hurt to put it out into the Ether's 😊

I’m usually the only Black actor or model on the jobs I work on and whenever I’m around other Black models we hug each other and usually do open to each other about who to work with and who to stay away from. A lot of the top models in modelling history come from lesser known places ( irina shayk - yemanzhelinsk, Russia, cindy crawford- Dekalb, Illinois, adriana lima- bahia, Brazil, Linda Evangelista- st Catherines, Ontario, etc.). It's rare to find top models who actually come from big cities like New York or LA.

I've been a model & had agencies trying to hunt me down on ista for 2yrs, I was in my late teens and sick, so I never actually signed with a company & the amature friend of mom & I shot a black/white pics (elegant, I styled & put on my own clothes & makeup) & we won an award I didn't even know he applied to...with some money as well!!
However, there's no room for ur bodyshape to change, or age most likely & even big companies traffick some of the girls to eacourts pr even sex trafficked. It can cause so many insecuritieS & you're likely to be expected to do for free in the beginning, which is wrong(that's slavery by definition).
Be careful out there, have a good support system so it's more difficult to be exploited!
Can I ask you how old you are, why you want to be a model & if you have a plan B or modelling being tge side hussle?!
      Have a nice day!

The amazing work ethic of these models is so high. I was happy to see the models speak on uplifting each other, and fighting the forced upon you mentality of there being only one. It's sad to see hair and makeup still being an issue. To me this is a part of how Black people are expected to work 2x as hard to get 1/2 as far. The idea of someone speaking over you to tell you they know what they are doing only to turn around and rip your hair from the scalp is insane, and also assault. There is a point where incompetence cannot be innocent or unintentional. To these models I can only say thank you for your endurance.
It comes down to an acceptance of White inferiority or lack of professionalism when it's in relation to none White people. A Black hairstylist can do anyones hair, a Black makeup artist is capable of doing anyones makeup. Yet, racism allows untalented/unskilled White artists to become names in the industry. As a problem still showing up in 2022, let's call that elephant what it is racism.

OMG...Karen Alexander!!!! I saw her years ago, shopping at an Old Navy, in NYC. Its one of my all time favorite stories. I was standing on line with a friend, and I could not believe it was actually her, standing in line, 3 or 4 people behind us!!! When we left the store, I waited outside (my poor friend had no idea why I was so excited. LOL), and as she exited the store, I walked up to her and said "Are you Karen Alexander!!??" She seemed surprised, flashed one of the most beautiful smiles and said "Yes". LOL. She could not have been nicer!! And one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. You always hear stories of how rude models, singers and actors can be.. but she was the exact opposite!!! She actually said "You must have seen me and said, there's Karen Alexander, on line, looking like hell." To which I answered "You couldn't look bad, even if you made an actual effort to. You were standing on line, looking like a princess, Gorgeous, sophisticated, elegant, and oozing regality! "which by the way, was the truth! I put my hands out and jokingly bowed my head a couple of times. She actually started tearing up, the way she did in this video. We chatted for a while, and realized we actually have a mutual friend. She hugged me, said hello to my friend (who was standing there, still looking confused), thanked me for being so sweet, and walked up 6th Avenue. I've met quite a few "celebrities", but to this day.. She remains the kindest, most humble I have ever encountered.

As a teenager in the 80's, I remember when fashion was the center of the universe as stated in this documentary. As a Black teenager living in a predominantly white area of Southern California, I purchased fashion magazines religiously during this time because of the upsurge in Black model representation. I needed that representation. This documentary so highlights their hard work and the mystique these supermodels had. That mystique made them seem larger than life. They were magic. The current crop of models don't seem to carry that same charisma. Brava to all of these ladies who paved the way for continued diversity in the industry!

The golden era will always be the late 80s and early 90s where many black women were booking many runway shows and editorials. They were very visible. Models like Naomi, Beverly Peele, Veronica Webb, Katoucha, Sonia Cole, Stephanie Roberts, Roshumba, Karen Alexanda, Alek Wek, Tyra, Debra Shaw were either in magazines and or runways of Milan, Paris and New York. However after 1997 it all changed and it become progressively less diverse. Less visible. It never got back to how it was at those times and those high wages.

Actually the short Afro on prime time television started with Queen Cicely Tyson.

And beautiful Black women have been having the short Afro featured in art from a millennia ago... seems more that she's reflecting on her impact upon how Black women were seen in fashion industry period - and not by proxy of more prominent talents (e.g. in the 70s, Diana Ross dominated fashion because she was a more prominent singer in the 60s... as for Cicely, she was revered as an actress long before she was remembered as beautiful RIP) - being strictly a professional fashion model in the context of this video #js

Actually, we're talking about fashion and models, not actresses.
