- The 90’s were the heyday of the Black model and when they began to become stars. We look at the rise of women like Iman who went from supermodel to super mogul and who inspired other Black models to explore alternative revenue streams like cosmetics, beauty, and books. We also hear from Roshumba Williams who talks about being offered the first Black-model cover of Sports Illustrated - and why she turned it down.

I grew up watching Tyra Banks. She made me fall in love with black beauty and fashion. Happy to see Vogue is giving her her flowers. This is really telling how Vogue didn’t give her or any other black models the cover. The only used Naomi in the 90s perpetuating the token black model.
You can def see that Elle Magazine was a supporter for diversity. And the black models did a different lane, the Tyra lane!

I like how they don’t have Naomi or Tyra in the docuseries just yet to give these other models a chance to tell their story.
they probably couldnt book them! or didnt wanna do a youtube video series tbh cause if they were more informed and conscious of this project I'm 1000% sure they would of taken part of it.
The highlight of my photography career was shooting a cosmetic campaign with Roshumba. She had it all, style, grace and professionalism and much more...

I'm not gone lie, the Alek Wek part made me cry a little, I grew up in the early 90's and I loooved fashion magazines as a young girl, seeing models like Alek Wek and Liya Kebede really inspired me soo much. Alek Wek throwing that blonde wig is and will forever be my absolute favorite moment in fashion history.
I always thought Veronica Webb was not only beautiful but super intelligent.
This is an Amazingly Awesome Historical Account. Immense Love & Respect to these Queens. Imagine that I just realized that Roshumba resembles my Mother.😉 Thanks so much for reminding me of how Beautiful My Mother was in her lifetime. 😍😍
Well the historical account was not fully correct....there were other black model trailblazer out there...Peggy Dillard...she had exclusive contracts, was a multiple Vogue Cover girl and almost monthly in Vogue in the late 70s, alsothere was Wanakee, Sheila Johnson.... black models like Iman herself had exclusive cosmetic contracts before Veronica Web stated here in this docu.... Beverly Johnson was quite sidelined here...she was huge in that era... but still this is a great docu...but slightly favoured towards the close model friends of the handsome Marcellas producer and Iman.
The most INCREDIBLE series I’ve seen in my lifeee !!!

Loved watching this series....however there were a bit misinformation about Veronica Webb having the first exclusive cosmetic contract. In the late seventies Iman herself had a Cosmetic Contract with Revlon, called Revlon’s Polished Ambers. Eventually Iman signed a two year six figure deal with them in 1979. Also another Black Vogue cover girl...
Peggy Dillard who was twice on the cover of US Vogue within a 5 month time frame...had an exclusive cosmetic contract with Flori Roberts to capture the more upscale ethnic market in the USA.....6-figures as well.
Interesting they did not feature that here....
By the way Karen Alexander was featured in Sports Illustrated before the lovely and gorgeous Roshumba was featured... we still have to get our facts straight right....?
Anyways there were lots of black trailblazers opening the doors for many black stars you see now...
Beverly Peele was working so much in the late 80s to mid 90s. She deserves her flowers. She was booking magazine covers and runways
I remember watching an episode of Style with Elsa Klensch, when Beverly Peele was beginning her modeling career, being interviewed by Elsa Klensch, and she asked Beverly something about fellow models in general, I do remember Beverly's response, saying that ( around this time " supermodels" were on the rise) " they (other models) were not too welcoming, lol
But as years went on, Beverly Peele was with the best of it, as she became part of the supermodel era.
I know everyone loves Naomi and Tyra but for me, the top black models of the 90s were Beverly Peele and Kara Young. I am surprised not to see anything featured about Beverly in this series.

Tyra has never graced the cover of Vogue Paris. The #917 issue was covered by Kate Moss. The one showed in this video I believe is a fanmade cover found on Pinterest.
Yes it's a fanmade cover on Pinterest ahahhaa Tyra has only been on the cover of spanish Vogue unfortunately. I wish the 30 something Vogue editions worldwide would shoot her for the cover !

Yes, Vogue perpetuated the token black girl. Vogue didn’t not use Tyra because Naomi was the black model for the 90s.
Also Naomi blocked Tyra from Chanel, John Casablancas said Naomi made him drop Tyra from Elite Models because there was no room for both of them (The owner of Elite said Naomi Campbell threatened him and that she was not someone stable at that time) and then Tyra left Elite Models and became a star with IMG.
Tyra was booked by Versace and 15 minutes before the show, after she had her hair and make up done the casting director Angelo told Tyra she was cancelled from the show because of Naomi, Naomi didn’t want her there.
I’m really happy that Vogue didn’t break Tyra and years after Vogue have to embrace her instead of blacklisted her like in the 90s. They had no choice! She overpassed all the “SUPERS”
