Not Fixing Things Right

  • The plaintiff says she brought her Mercedes to the defendant’s shop for repairs, but it wasn’t running right when she picked it up. There was even black smoke coming from the tailpipe. She took the car to another mechanic who told her the defendant did nothing to fix the car, so she’s suing for her money back. The defendant says he repaired areas of the car, but the plaintiff burned out her fuel pump and it’s unrelated to the repairs he did. He denies owing anything and is countersuing for towing costs.

    I don’t consider a car that’s 10 years old . Old . I mean if I pay $50,000 for a vehicle sometimes even $100000 for a pick up . I’m going to expect it to last… it not like changing underwear . I mean what we are suppose to buy a new car every 3 years or something ? I can understand a car 17-20 years old . But to expect people to buy a whole new car after ten years as if they shouldn’t expect their investment to last , is crazy to me .

      10 years may jot be super old, but kerp in mind manufacturer warranties end in roughly 10 years on a brand new vehicle. And if you don’t maintain said vehicle in that 10 years, stuff is gonna break. I doubt this girl is the original owner, and she didnt find anything wrong driving around her car with th ‘’check engine light’’ on, and smelling of gas. Her response to that was literally ‘’I never had that problem before. I’ve always drivin it like that .” Heck, she didn’t even care there was oil in her antifreeze. She only brought it in because someone else told her that the problem might get worse if she didn’t take care of it now. So yes, 10 years is pretty old for a car that has not been maintained properly.

    • @Stressless2023

      10 years is officially "old" in car age - Things simply wear out in that amount of time - And cars aren't "investments" they are depreciating assets built for human convenience (luxuries), no different than an Iphone or smart TV - Not to mention this was a Mercedes which are way more complex than some simple little Toyota or Chevy so the cost of ownership on an "old" one will naturally be significantly higher to keep it on the road.

And by the time you guys bring it to us, it’s holding on by a thread and expect us to work miracles. People need to learn what PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE is. It means replacing BEFORE it goes bad. There are a few things the mechanic said that caught my attention. He said he saw oil in the radiator and said he changed the radiator but changing the radiator would do nothing to stop oil from getting into the coolant. Then he said he showed her the burnt out fuell pump. To do that he would have had to drop the fuel tank, pulled the pump out and disconnect it from the wiring and hose, then put it all back. That would have been the same labor as replacing the pump.
    I recently recently i took my van in for a strong vibration. The mechanic changed the fuel pump, and injectors. The vibration was still there. Turns out it was the motor mounts. The first mechanics had not even checked them.

Two days later he was driving down the highway with a trailer on the back and his engine threw a rod, totally killing it. He came in furious and wanted to know what we could have done installing that starter to cause his engine to blow. I said it probably wasn't anything to do with his starter but instead the fact that his Explorer had over 170k miles. But I gave him my insurance companies number and told him he was free to file a claim if he felt we were responsible. The adjuster determined that he had a major lack of maintenance as well as pulling a trailer with a load that was well above his vehicle's recommended towing capacity. His claim was denied of course.

Many of those cars got repoed because once they broke down and the buyers could not afford the repair bills. The owner did not want bad reviews for his business, so he had them sign another paper with those cars stating that they understood maintenance/repair bills cost are high and the vehicle would be repoed if they failed to keep up with the car payment. It also included an estimate of what repairs/maintenance would cost. Sure enough, they still bought them, and some of those vehicles returned to be sold gain.

    Auto repair shops routinely mark up the price of parts..... it's what helps keep their shops open. Some are reasonable, some are not, but most all of them do that. LaShohn'da seems to believe that because a car still runs, there can be nothing wrong with it. I'm pre-laughing when she eventually needs an oil pump or some other internal parts for her Mercedes that typically costs 5 times more than they would for Ford.

    5:10 a burnt out fuel pump is usually caused by driving a car routinely until the fuel gauge is just about on “E”. The fuel keeps the pump lubricated so less fuel equals less lubrication which causes the fuel pump to burn out….

    When I get a diagnostic, which can cost $200+, I expect the mechanic to tell me everything that's wrong with my car. If I think a radiator will fix my issues, but it is actually a radiator plus a head gasket, then I need to know. I might choose to just junk it instead of going down a rabbit hole of repairs.
    Mechanics, is this a fair ask? I imagine your diagnostic tools are like the tester at Autozone that can spit out a code of issues needing repairs.

    • @hey-you7
      @hey-you7 Рік тому +1

      Unfortunately it doesn't always work that way. In your example of a blown head gasket and bad radiator- you have to repair the radiator first before you can continue to diagnose to find a blown head gasket.
      Similar to if a car doesn't start- you diagnose a failed fuel pump but after replacing the fuel pump it runs rough due to ignition issues. Some things have to be diagnosed and repaired first before other diagnostics can be performed.
