    Recorded entirely live, apart from the bass+drum loop I sequenced into the phrase pad beforehand, and a couple of vocal overdubs. The Juno DS is quite a powerhouse, especially for 80s stuff. All stock presets, too! Par the odd cutoff/vibrato. It's got a great sampling function too if you wanna go the extra mile for authenticity, which I unfortunately only discovered after filming this video haha!
    It's a slightly different arrangement rather than a note-for-note recreation, which is inevitable being performed live by one person who didn't write the song, rather than in a studio by four people who did! That said, I did try and keep at least the vibe faithful to the original and I hope you enjoy it! It's also mashed up with a couple of other tunes, partially because I was vibing it, and partially to confuse the copyright police.
    Blue Monday © Factory Records, 1983
    I didn't write this song. Gillian Gilbert, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris and Bernard Sumner did. It'd be silly to claim that I had any involvement in composing Blue Monday considering how well known it is and how it came out 13 years before I was born. But you can't be too careful nowadays! T x

    Serious thanks for everyone's support, didn't expect this to take off!
    This was meant to be an equipment test for the Juno more than anything else, so I'm glad it's encouraged some of you to get a hand on this powerhouse of a workstation and delve into the phrase pad. I just wish I put in more on the performance side and picked a better bass sound haha!
    A lot of questions to answer so I might do a runthrough video to help some of you out, so watch this space! But to answer some of them in the meantime:
    - I'd definitely recommend this synth, particularly for 80s-style synth-filled music - which seems to be making a resurgence as of recent.
    - That is a naughty Floyd solo in the middle (always take risks)! Keyboards aren't normally great at accurately replicating other instruments, but the clean guitar sound on this is fantastic.
    - Unfortunately you can't record a mic input into the pattern sequencer - but you CAN plug your mic in and even use it as a USB audio interface, which more than compensates for it!
    - We do have hamburgers and fries in England but we call french fries 'chips'.
    If you like this video, please consider donating so I can keep this music thing going. Any donations, no matter how small, would be massively appreciated. paypal.me/tommonksmusic
    Cheers again and catch you all soon!
    T x

    Really cool 😎👍🏼. I just purchased the DS-88 yesterday. It is my first 88 Hammer action keyboard ever. I will incorporate it into my musical array of sounds and instruments. I actually do similar thing on my channel where I practice with the different gear instruments that I have and use the channel just to express my practice sessions. Cheers from California US👌🏼💪🏼

    Best demo and cover of the juno ds88 . I'm a guitar player and have the ds61 to do some easy backing for band . I was looking to upgrade to 88 semi weighted keys and tried other synths . All way to complicated for live gigging and twice as expensive . I like the simplicity of the juno ds 88 and simple sequencer at this price point . I also like the rs 2000 , way better piano but no sequencer or drums and twice the price . Any I ther recommendations . Tried the the korg nautilus and it took five minutes to boot up . Most likely going with ds88

    • @TomMonksMusic
      @TomMonksMusic  3 роки тому +2

      In theory, yes you could with a lot of songs! Although it'd ultimately depends on how complex the song's structure is, being limited to 8 different parts with a max of 8 bars each.
      So songs that are based on a bass/drum/chord loop, yes definitely! Which paves the way for a lot of famous songs. But something like Good Vibrations or Rhapsody in Blue might be a different story haha

    • @TomMonksMusic
      @TomMonksMusic  3 роки тому +2

      Good question .... honest review coming up! It really depends what you need and what kind of genres you play. It's great for synth-type stuff, a true powerhouse in that aspect. And perfect for cover bands especially with the split and sampler function, and even Richard Tandy from ELO uses one live!
      But if you do jazz, blues etc and require realistic piano and hammond sounds, I'd honestly advise looking into other options. Those ones in it and in the expansion packs are more than enough to get by in pubs and small gigs, but anything bigger than that, the 80s/90s-ness of the sounds became a bit too noticeable for my liking. That's where this keyboard honestly didn't suit my tastes and needs in the long run (unless using as a controller for MainStage etc), but if I had continued with the 80s/cover band route it would have been perfect.
      In short - the sounds can be (in my opinion) a little dated, albeit charmingly so, and if that's what you're after, it's the best! It's capable of a lot too. Just listen to as many demos as you can, especially of the sounds you plan on using.
      Bestest with your keyboard ventures!

    Fantastic jam! Incredible talent, skill, and improvisation. I assume you were not running your vocals through the Juno mic input? Nor was there any Juno processing on vocal? I liked the little trick of playing two Juno voices (instruments) at the same time by holding a drone chord, then switching to the second voice and soloing with it. Kool :) While in pattern sequence mode I assume you cannot use a performance layer on the keyboard, thus you used this trick/hack/?

    • @TomMonksMusic
      @TomMonksMusic  3 роки тому

      Thank you so much! Seriously kind words, means a lot. Apologies for the delay in response, wanted to get the chance to type a proper one!
      So I recorded the vocals with a seperate audio interface, mainly to have a bit more control over gain, mixing and any necessary overdubs in post. But the mic input really does come in handy, I don't use it so much for vocals as the gain knob is quite small and fiddly, but it's hella powerful for the vocoder function and such - even Richard Tandy from ELO uses it for that nowadays which is a great thing to see.
      And great observation with the drone notes! It's one way to work around being confined to patches in the sequencer, rather than full performances that you can control nearly every aspect of the sounds behaving and interacting with each other. One tricky thing is that I'm used to deactivating the sustain pedal for certain patches in performance mode, letting chords or drones sustain with the pedal whilst having non-sustained freedom with the leads and such, if that makes sense. So in sequencer mode I have to break that force of habit. But if Roland allowed performance modes on the sequencer in future firmware updates, it could open a lot of doors, we're only blessed with so many hands haha!

      @@TomMonksMusic My new JunoDS61 arrived and now I have a Juno in my studio again....again because I had a Juno bought new in the 1980s, but had to sell in hard times 15 years later. The new Juno is sooooo easy to understand, and after a few days I know it quite well. I purchased it because of the vocoder and pattern sequencer...a vocoder because I don't have that wonderful vocal you do, you really have a rich vocal timbral that could be a favorite of a million music lovers. Maybe you are already famous and I don't know it....I don't get out much :) .....oh except wilderness treks....I do spend many hours a day in wilderness :)
