  • Built in 1931, Mount Rainier's Sunrise Road still ranks among the most beautiful drives in the country. From the park's White River entrance, just off Washington State Route 410 (the Chinook Scenic Byway), the Sunrise Road twists and turns its way 16 miles (25.7 kilometers) into the rich alpine meadows of the Sunrise Visitor Center, near the mountain's northeastern slope. As it climbs to an elevation of over 6400 feet (1950 meters), the Sunrise Road becomes the highest point in the park reachable by car, offering panoramic views of Mount Rainier, its massive Emmons Glacier, and the jagged ridges of its surrounding peaks.
Like most of the roads leading into the park, however, the Sunrise Road is buried in snow for most of the year limiting its opening. Park officials typically close the road in early-October not to reopen it again until late June or early July.

Too much of your car; not enough of the Sunrise scenery I wanted to assess.

My family and I visited there yesterday. We entered from Nisqually SW entrance. Next time will use White River Sunrise NE entrance.

Thanks for your comment. Sorry for the delay. I wanted to shoot a video of the Nisqually drive last spring, but everything was shut down because of COVID. Hopefully, I can get to it this year.

Hi, Leslie. Sorry for not responding sooner. This is a hobby for me so I usually only check the channel once a week. By now you've already made the trip to Mt. Rainier, so I'd be interested in hearing what route you took and what the road conditions were like. According to the park's website, as of this writing the main roads--Sunrise, Paradise, and Stevens Canyon--are closed for the season.

Thanks for your comment. It's not really that bad. The GoPro makes it seem like I'm driving faster than I actually am!
