The horn is the soul of the orchestra
I concur!!!!

I agree... it can carry a melody richly on its own, but also can provide superb support for the other instruments. 😊
I'm learning to play the horn.

I had a cochlear implant that broke maybe 4 years ago. This was the last song I could hear before my ear died.
Worth it. I used to play double french horn.
please say you are getting that "repaired" - 4 years is too long. Go fund me.... or something!
@@karlamorningsun they sent me loaner parts that were broken on arrival. Then they told me my model was obsolete and I had to pay 11 grand for the upgrade.
I was not civil with them. Sent them everything cochlear related I owned back and told them if they want the shit inside my head they can pay for and schedule the surgery to have it removed.
I don't think it's fair that medical devices like that are allowed to have monopolies on their shit like they do.
I enjoy the sounds of silence now.
@@simul8rduude Jesus
@@mozza5346 the surgery to get the implant and the 1st external part cost 75,000$
And now I'm supposed to shit out another 11,000$ because you want to upgrade and make older models obsolete?
Fuck you cochlear. I hope every single one of you go deaf and have to deal with this same shit.
Not to mention, before it went obsolete, just the external part costs 5,000$
The rechargable batteries are 200$ a piece.
Regular batteries cost 20$ for a pack of 6. It takes 3 regular batteries to power this bitch up and they only last 3 days before they die.
I mean. What in the actual fuck yo?
I play French horn... This is goals.

please think of your neighbours
Godddamn it I need a mute
Iwasat the mall I play french horn, intact I have it out right now!

French horn music always makes me think of the sun beating through the tall windows of an old university library after the term ends, when the students have left and the dust particles pass between the light and the shadow as they drift idly through the storied halls.

Oh brother
@@jones616 yeah that's right
French Horn is how I imagine nature is when no ones watching
The horn's timbre just sounds so warm and inviting and like everything is good in the world.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Tchaikovsky just breaks my heart over and over again. Possibly the most profound and touching thing ever composed.
The horn is the the nobility of the orchestra, the regal warmth of sound that surrounds the music in it’s beautiful tone.
It would be if we would listen to an artist - and not a musician - who is able to make that horn create waves of sounds that carry us away into a world of harmony and peace.
This brought tears to my eyes. I miss playing horn so much, the most beautiful instrument....
Yes! this totally made my eyes water. Something about the beautiful music and the great player was just magical.
Second most beautiful.
Me too, played horn in high school and college, never forget
Amen!!!❤
i play the double french horn. i absolutely hated it before watching this video. i thought it sounded ugly, it was hard to play, and pointless since it gets almost no recognition at all. ask someone to name a brass instrument, they’ll say trumpet. but i now realize, just because it’s hard, doesn’t mean i should quit. it’s a beautiful instrument, and i hope to play like this some day. ❤️
✊🏻
So do I! All you need to do is practice! 😁
It sure is hard, but I do think it has the nicest sound of the brass instruments and, along with the cello, the nicest sound of any instrument.
@@dembakirtzis2227 That’s easier said than done... 😅
Definitely one of my favourite instruments. The tone it can produce is very beautiful and it has a very important role in the orchestra. Brahms horn trio wouldn't work at all if any other instrument played that part instead and neither would this beautiful piece. I think Mozart had a brilliant idea (one that unfortunately saw little use in the romantic period) by writing all of those horn concerti.
I prefer half notes and whole notes that sounds beautiful and full over flashy runs any day
But... those aren't half and whole, they are quarters and eights with SOME half and whole
@@mrreinark3388 well dotted because 12/8
But what if the run is played clean? So satisfying.
@@frostfox851 depends, during a climatic moment i think a run can add all the more but can also ruin a moment.
@@yamiii true
The French horn is underrated they play the best Melody's
Having played the horn, any time I listened to orchestras now no matter how many or how few horn players there were I could always pick out the horn sound from every other instrument.
I agree
@@simul8rduude iktr!
So true
I just finished listening to about 5 versions of this and this one is my favorite. Great horn sound and they don't rush the tempo.
Celibidache is famous for his extremely slow interpretations. There is an interview where he explains his philosophical grounds of taking such slow tempi.
In band im in charged of the french horn and they always play so low and i always say to theme firm lips and mote air but they dont listen
Im 13 years old. And I know Eric Terwilliger. I Start in French horn some normal day...
One day, my mom inscribe me in a french horn class.
Im very lucky. Because in 1 year only waiting for every class, I was the only classmate who know him.
He is Magic.
Damn, I am a trumpet player and this makes me jealous
Patrick MCCAW switch to horn. It’s not that different embouchure wise
@@wuhoh5655 and note wise it isn't that far off. In highschool and have played trumpet for 3 years and this year I'm still playing Trumpet in Jazz band but Horn in concert
Yeah but you get the posthorn solo in Mahler 3
same
Same forreal
1:18 And there in the picture you can see the face of a person who lost his big opportunity to play an epic horn solo...
Caroline Backstad I know it’s a year later, but that’s EXACTLY what I thought too lmao like dang that would suckkkkkk
@@carawoodell8940 haha ye! Atleast he got to listen to a very beautiful solo!
Caroline Backstad lol yeah true I play the French horn and mellophone and I would die if I got second chair to a part like that lol
As a high-school senior horn player, I can tell you that the amount of control Terwilliger has is astounding due to the fact that having it is *very challenging* to master and sustain.
His sound is gorgeous!
Brings tears to my eyes my father played trombone and French horn my mother flute and piano growing up with music majors was a privilege I appreciate music 🎶
One of the most beautiful horn solos ever written and beautifully played.
@ThanksfortheObvious Here's a tip that I didn't get when I was starting- Air. The French horn needs SO much air to have a rich sound.
Practice a LOT on this instrument, you will see results.
If you don't have a method book, find one. They will help you with technique.
Audition for every single stupid little competition and honor band you can find in your area. You will have a drive to improve constantly.
Ask your director how you can improve personally. It really helps to have a good director.
When I learned to play the French horn there were 8 of us at first. Most moved to trumpet and one to saxaphone. There were only two of us left by the end of it with me being the better (I don't like to boast)
My teacher would always heavily emphasize that the power of the horn came from having good control of your diaphragm. Our band came in second place in the Smoky mountain music festival in Tennessee.
I miss playing the horn so much.
@@simul8rduude why did you stop?
@@thomasjohnston8970 i never actually owned the horn i used when i used to play, it was more of a loaner. lots of things happened inbetween, i never actually went and bought my own horn to keep up with playing.
One of the great moments in symphonic literature. The solo just floats on the warm glow of the strings seemingly on a different scale of time and space where everything is in slow motion.
The strings introduction for the horn is absolutely gorgeous! And then the horn comes in with great precision
Great performance. Near perfect. Beautiful sound. Makes me want to dust off my old Conn.

Go for it man
Im in Jr high I play French horn. I listen to this for motivation
Me too my school band has me wanting to shoot myself lol

This has to be my favourite horn solo ever.
Celibidache's tempi are often painfully slow, but this is beautiful.
+Timothy Reeves
I agree, I also find this rendition a little slow but non the less superbly played.
I find it too slow. Sorry.
I picked up the horn about a year ago and I had no idea how amazing this instrument could sound. Also, this song is perfect for the horn
I think when tchikovsky hears this, he is proud of...What a piece of music, and the soloist..wow!
The other horns are so dead inside cause they aren’t playing.😂
While going to concerts is amazing and all, nothing can really replicate the feeling of being _in_ the band, among the players. And somehow, this has a bit of that feeling. I think even my soul gets chills whenever I hear the French horn.
My father played the french horn for his country in the 3rd queens battalion. Wonderful instrument and this reminds me of him. Rest in peace pops!
Sublime and hauntingly beautiful.
Some of these haircuts are hilarious
The first clarinet? XD
3:48 is definitely the winner
There are times when things such as words are simply not enough....What can one write? How can one express the feelings such a masterpiece evokes in the heart, soul and mind?
I am always amazed at what such composers can achieve. How DO they do it? Simply no words.
Bravo, well put. Achingly beautiful. One of my faves from years back - still great. Cannot listen without a tear.
Shit’s lit
In my opinion Eric Terwilliger comes closest to producing the iconic sound of a Vienna Horn in F, but using a modern double horn. Absolutely gorgeous. Bravo!
Thank you Mr. Terwilliger for your wonderful horn playing. So beautiful . . .
You are right August, The second movement was made on purpose by tchaikovsky for this very reason. He chose the horn to sound a lot more full and melodic, Its supposed to be like walking through the snow in the middle of a field while the snow is falling. Its supposed to signify happiness
So beautifully played. So much emotion.
Amazingly beautiful ! I was looking for the name of this instrument for a long time, I'm really glad that I finally found what made such a beautiful and deep sound, it brings such a depth that I find no other instrument brings, simply beautiful !
Oh darling we do not only make deep sounds I can range in 3 octaves with braces on without by now I may be able to go higher , I am currently doing my grade 4 in the 6th year of playing this amazing instrument I will never not be in love with the sound
+Cait Louise 3 words: John Phillip Sousa.
+oncemoreuntothebreach Don't you dare speak of the devil's name.
+oncemoreuntothebreach Don't bring up the mention of that demon spawn.
+Cait Louise If a player is very good, they can hit a 6 octave range.
Best interpretation I've found on youtube. He makes a slight error at 2:28, but his excellent phrasing, dynamics, and style make up for it.
Ethan Wang lmao wang

total flub there.
That's no error, that's horn-style! ☝🏼
This actually brought tears to my eyes. Terrific musician.
Love the french horn! So soothing yet recognizable...
this is quite possibly the most beautiful recording of this piece that i have ever heard
4:04 I have played this in an Orchestra. This is the slowest Tempo that I’ve heard this at. It is a wonderful rendering by the Hornist 🙏🏾.
this is the one of the most beautiful classical music that i have listened so far.
amazing!!! if only i could listen to this in live
Romantic. :)
Just absolutely beautiful!
horn sounds just way too wonderful.
@Mackchai Boston Symphony, Pierre Monteux conducting - 1958 recording. James Stagliano plays the horn solo so hauntingly well. It has stuck with me ever since I first heard it. Inspired me to become a horn player...still hope to play it as well some day.
So, were you able to play it that well?
What a beautiful piece.. i hope to rise to the levels of these amazing horn players, it is an amazing instrument and i absolutly love playing it, thanks for sharing this song with us.
Yo conoci en persona y hasta hable con eric terwilliger y hasta nos saludamos y me pregunto "Donde estar tu trompa" o algo asi y fue como algo normal para mi aunque muy extraño por que nunca habia estado con una persona tan importante.
That looks like another superbly played Paxman horn, with its sublime tone
I have to admire anyone who does this well. Tried it as a jr in HS. The fingerings are not such a big deal, but to get the intonation right on each note is really a challenge.
So that's the instrument that always speaks to my soul. Always had a feeling it was the horn.
This sounds like an epic movie soundtrack background. Maybe too epic.
It really does! A lot of the modern film composers took inspiration from this era of orchestral music, super cool
That was beautiful...This really helped me for my auditions in symphonic band. It showed me the tempo and tone quality. Thank you so very much!
Very beautifully orchestrated. Great distinction in cello crescendo. French Horn here is played most resoundingly!! and very beautiful.
(Just a humble observation from an amateur: mistake at 2:30 ?)
sim é verdade...um pequeno descuido...
It seems so. This gives me hope in my imperfection as a singer.
yeah. french hornists struggle a lot in not cracking notes
ich bin ein Berliner --- not bad for a Bloomington, Indiana school boy. Farkas student early on. Met him in the horn shop at the 2004 IHS convention at IU, as we tried out Horns and compared notes. Not surprising that he ended up 1 of the top Horns in Europe
No-one wrote symphonies like Tchaikovsky!
So talented; those jumps from low to high and back again is no joke for the french horn. Great control and perfect tone from a master musician.
Beautiful 🎼😊💗 the solo horn is everything
perfect sound , musicianship and understanding of the excerpt .
The french horn's part is so soothing.
absolutely beautiful.
everyone needs a horn solo at least once in there lives!!!
F. horn is a tricky instrument--the armbisher (misp) is small, one has to have superb breath control and it can 'go' at any time. This is one of the most deservedly beautiful melodies and orchestral solos of all time.
The horn is my favorite instrument og all time. It's eary and yet smooth and full.
Эрик просто умничка!И по тембру,и по звуку, и по фразе!Сыграно по-русски!!!
Absolutely beautiful ❤️
Wow that was just awesome!
Fantastic!
It sounds like heaven💕✨
That was so beautifully performed I almost cried haha. The hairdos are pretty bad though lol
beautiful.
Marvelous.
Phenomenal makes emotion come right out
Beautiful
He came to bloomington for a few weeks in the fall of 07 and he still still using a holton MP iirc.
Amazing rendition!
The cough attack in the intro is crazy lol
Great sound, great phrasing, great playing, especially when presented with such a slow tempo from the conductor.
What a great tone!
Where do you get hold of one of these Vienna horns? They resemble the VERY old school French horns, which had several exchangeable lengths of circular tubing--which would allow the horn to only play in a certain key. Now we have double and triple French horns which go with the most useful ranges, but these are very cool. I bet they cost a mint--like the Wagner tuba (Wagner horn). Forget finding a used one, I bet.
Awesome!
beautiful
yes! there was! noticed it too.
but wow beautiful sound. wish i still played...
So darn nice.
Fantastic
