A live synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.
Fair warning: Neutral Labs sent along the Scrooge for me to try out, after I'd had such a good time with their Elmyra 2. The Scrooge is a wild duck: I guess you could call it a drum machine, but its sounds get really wild, like raw electricity running through circuits. It has five voices that roughly line up with traditional drum sounds (kick, hats, snare, perc, tom) but really go into glitchy, electrical territory.
The Scrooge's voices don't require any power at all, and can produce sound just by "poking" it from other devices with CV/gate. When you power it, though, you get a pretty killer sequencer and a lot of "control-all" power to shape both sound and sequencing during live performance. The sound-shaping parameters are neat, because (e.g.) starving it for voltage doesn't just affect its volume but also the general character of the sounds.
Anyway, the Scrooge is quite unapologetic about what it's going for, not trying to be every drum machine for every situation; instead, it's a glitchy electrical monster that can add a lot of rhythm to a song.
Here, I paired the Scrooge with the Digitakt II, and they turned out to be great friends. Scrooge has MIDI in for synching and transport control, and the unpredictability/performability of the Scrooge paired well with the sound shaping of the DTII. The DTII gives you plenty of voices and great sound, but not as much immediate control of sequencing performance; by contrast, the Scrooge gives you tons of on-the-fly control of sequencing and a weird sound that complements the DTII.
I feel like a person will be into the Scrooge sound or not, and that's OK. For me, I love the sound of electricity running through circuits, and glitchy percussive sounds, so I had a lot of fun with the Scrooge. It's a lot of fun.
Thanks for listening.
Elektron Digitakt II - eight drum samples, eight melodic samples, sequencing, effects
Neutral Labs Scrooge - five analog glitch/drum voices, sequencing
Performed and recorded live, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.
jayhosking.ban...
I have no idea how he does it, but Mr. Hosking just keeps coming up with music like nobody else.
2:49 that chord at the 8th bar gives all the salt in this otherwise classic chord progression, well done ! And that sound...
WOW . . . one of my favorite tracks of yours. The simplicity of this setup and the beautiful calamity that it produces feels so good and so right.
This is so vibey and deep, Jay. I love it.
I found your channel a couple of weeks ago while browsing for some synth or another, and stayed & subscribed for your music and style. I'm lovin' it!
Such a good sounding device, and nice playing/programming!
Absolutely fantastic. Filthy wonderful sounds.
sick track 🤝
Dude that was SICK! Most music I hear on UA-cam are jams -- loops that sound cool but aren't arranged or fully fleshed out -- especially with live performances on hardware. This one was a song. Amazing work!
Watched it twice in a row. Is this song on streaming platforms? It should be!
Needs to make it onto an album first, which will take a while. But I'll update the text description when that happens! And thanks.
You never cease to inspire, well done!
inspiring pads here - love how subtle and rich they are - ur great
You absolutely owe it to yourself to get this music on as many platforms as possible - idk what kind of musical success you have elsewhere, perhaps more than I'm privy to - but you've just got the sauce
Thanks for the kind words. When I have a collection of songs that make sense together musically, I release them as an album on Bandcamp (jayhosking.bandcamp.com). About six months to a year later, they get released on streaming services. Thanks again!
Jay, that is a SICK/Awesome jam. Gotta love it! Will have to check out the Scrooge for Christmas!!!! Thanks for sharing.
Always in love with your music, Jay.
This thing is neat. Great jam, as always 👍
That was a helluva thing
Killer piece!! Intense groove. Love it. Thanks for this one man.
This is very good music
Delicious sounds!!
Sounds scrunchyyyy. Love Neutral Labs
Wow, amazing sounds.
Wow love this
Thanks for the good vibes🫡
Another cool jam!
Great sound!
Yes bro ! Sick track !
This is sick ❤
very nice
Loved that top stuff. I have often looked at the Digitakt and wondered if I should invest but to date..... No. Very masterfully done.
I have no doubt that you have a good sense of whether the DTII would work for you. It's cool, but ultimately there are a lot of amazing hardware approaches out there. I will say that I'm finding a lot more utility in the DTII than its predecessor, if that means anything. And thanks!
Amazing 😍
So f good 🔥
Scrooge is definitely on my studio wish list (the eurorack version). Such a cool little module.
Also on mine (desktop)... and rapidly working it's way up the list!
Wow!!!!🔥🔥🔥
Beat slaps
All I want is to jam with Jay Hosking
Goddamit Jay !
Could you leave a little✨ talent for the rest of us 😮
Just picked up the dt2 last may and was using the same pad sample in a prject cool too see how you have used it, great mix
yep🤙👻😻
Honestly, I have little clue as to what the Scrooge is doing vs the digitakt. But cool jam non the less
Very good! sounds a bit like Imanu, which is crazy for hardware
This is a jam
🤩
Wow, the biggest question in my mind is how did I miss knowing about the Scrooge and that it can be pre-ordered now from Perfect Circuit? The Elmyra 2 is super cool.
Well, it just launched today, so it would have been quite the feat of you to know about it before. 😋
Sadly you cant get hold of a Scrooge right now for love or money
It's just temporary. The demand right after launch was a bit overwhelming. There'll be more in stock soon! 😉
@@nyppy Can't wait. My credit card is poised
What is this new toy you are making me want?? lol
🤍🎧
What synth did you use for track 13 on the Digitakt? The one that comes in at the end of the song?
Can’t make out what the Scrooge is doing
Fair enough, its just a jam though, not a demo. Check mylarmelodies if you want a deep look.
@ i sounded like i was complaining but I wasn’t. Sorry anyway
Watch the little lights on the faceplate, and you'll see which sounds are the scrooge
"Significantly improved" DT2 that is. I have been staying away from looking specifically so i dont go and buy one. But, mute cues? Come on. Thats awesome.🎛🎛👍
