Abused - child protection in the pandemic | documentaries and reports

Never before has there been so much violence against children as in the first year of the pandemic: 152 were killed, 36 percent more than in the year before the pandemic, 4900 children were abused (beaten, kicked or neglected). Main cause: overwhelmed parents. And the number of unreported cases of domestic violence and child abuse is even higher than before, experts suspect. Because schools and daycare centers were temporarily closed during the lockdown and could not sound the alarm. But if nobody sounds the alarm, social workers like Vivian Osterhoff from the Wiesbaden youth welfare office cannot intervene and protect children. The pandemic has also made it even more difficult to keep in touch with families when they need support. Only if Vivian Osterhoff closely accompanies affected children and young people do they have a chance of a future free of violence. Like a 19-year-old young woman, for example. Her father beat her and her stepfather sexually molested her. Now she lives in an assisted living group and is doing an apprenticeship. If children have conspicuous injuries, forensic pathologist Sarah Kölzer checks whether abuse could have occurred. In the case of an 8-week-old baby, any help came too late. Numerous broken bones, hematomas, a bite in the cheek, the autopsy in the Frankfurt forensic medicine took over 7 hours. Sarah Kölzer prepared an expert opinion for the court.
