Located on and formed by the Corn Creek Fault, an active Strike-Slip Fault most likely associated with the Las Vegas Valley Shear Zone, Corn Creek is a lush set of springs that attracts an abundance of local wildlife. From gorgeous Cottonwood & Ash trees to the endangered Pahrump Poolfish, the wildlife that calls these springs home is diverse. You can see the Pahrump Poolfish for yourself in their little aquarium-house thing, built for their protection. They're actually kinda cute!
The area attracts many species of bird as well, from ducks, geese, and coots to elegant songbirds, and even birds of prey such as Peregrine Falcons, Red-Tailed Hawks, and Golden Eagles. Additionally, many mammals, such as Coyotes, Bighorn Sheep, Mountain Lions, Badgers, Deer, and Foxes call the place home as well. I just discussed trees, fish, birds, and mammals, so I'll go all out and add that numerous lizards, snakes, frogs, toads, insects, arachnids, and other critters also call the place home.
Historically, Corn Creek was a ranch and a pit stop on the old Las Vegas-Tonopah Railroad that dates back to the 1900s. The railroad was in operation from 1905-1918. A cabin and other structures still exist today, as does a ranch and orchard filled with pomegranate, plum, peach, apple, almond, and pecan trees. Back in the 1930s, peach pie was made, and an old bootleg was set up, with locally famous Corn Creek Dry Gin.
Corn Creek is one of my absolute favorite places near Las Vegas, and it's an amazing place to have a picnic, go on a leisurely stroll, and escape the desert scenery for awhile. You won't even remember that you're in arid Nevada when you come to Corn Creek, for a brief moment at least...
To get to Corn Creek, take US-95 north from Las Vegas for about 25 miles. Turn right on Corn Creek Road and take the road to where the pavement ends. Parking and the visitor center is on the left. The hikes at Corn Creek are not long or difficult at all, and the trails are actually ADA-Inclusive, so grandma or grandpa in the wheelchair can accompany you up there too! There is no fee to enter, and the trails are open from dusk 'till dawn, 7 days a week.

No ticks in vegas. Up north near Reno I'm not so sure. It gets too hot here though.

@@GeologicalNerd I have encountered ticks in higher elevation areas of Las Vegas in which more shrubery is present; definitely in the Mt. Charleston region.
