It’s a boost with light grit, and a single BBD which provides very short delay times. In other words, an analog slap back delay and booster. The short delay times can provide a ‘filter’ effect due to comb filtering, as well as the natural darkening the BBD provides with the blend set higher. I like mine quite a bit
The spread knob is doing exactly the same thing on the first half as it is on the second half. It’s a delay time control. But up until 12 o’clock, the delay is too short for human ears to hear as two distinct sounds. So it sounds like a filtering effect an the frequencies phase with one another.
This is what I'd consider a "character" pedal, where it may not be something you NEED, but does something that can be handy for a specific section or cool modulation type effect, or as a type of OD with some additional processing.
With all these guys running around looking for boost or OD pedals to stack (and many of them getting pricey)... this seems like the perfect pedal to drive/stack other OD pedals. People are paying hundreds for mid-focused boutique pedals, when all they really need is this. Crazy this pedal is getting overlooked. I glanced by it before but will definitely give it another look.
where you'll really experience what this pedal actually milks, is by using it in conjunction with a Distortion pedal, to add some level and carve the tone of the other unit. Although this seems to get more extreme than some of those other pedals used for the same purpose. Subtlety between various elements IS what creates a great tone.
I've had this pedal for five or so years, it's great. I think of it as a subtle 'tone conditioner' - the blend and spread pots add a pinch of modulation that work as a kind of secret sauce. It's not obvious and it doesn't have to be, it's just better that way. Another Mike Mathews special indeed.
I loved the preamp/volume boost on my EH Memory Toy and used it as a end of chain buffer. Once I emailed EH and they told me that delay uses the same gain stage as the analogizer. I've been wanting to get a hold of one of these since then
All this. I use it to cut the volume in front of a fuzz or distortion. Like the Signal Pad, but with more ways to shape the tone. Just kinda fun to mess with, too.
When the blend is maxed its only the delay tone. Its being processed in an order where the analog processing for the guitar into the wet section of the delay pedal is not being staggered or 'delayed'. its basically like a super short delay time with a fully wet output.
You showed up in my feed because of the holy & all knowing algorithm. I just caught this this morning. You're right. I had no idea what that pedal did. I've seen the EHX demos: THEY have no idea what this ACTUALLY does either (oh, how I wish I could use italics, instead of all caps & quotation marks). This is amazing. No, it's not too subtle. I have (or have had, & flipped) all sorts of "intense" effects. Lately I've gone down the rabbit hole of "always on" pedals & plain vanilla OD's & distortions. The EQ shelving & (usable) manual filter. I need that. Thanks. Great video. /// I had to come back & add to this. The Velvet Underground riff turned my day around. Great playing in general, but your choices of what to play is also fantastic.
I don't own one, but based on your demo I believe the "phase" notch you're hearing at the first part of the speed knob travel is a comb-filter effect created by the extremely short delay at that point.
The spread seems to be just a delay time control for the echo. But if you make an echo short enough it turns into an out-of-phase effect. I could imagine this would great as a lead booster in front of a driven amp - if the amp isn't too driven to handle the echo well. But a subtle echo can work well, the Carbon Copy delay sure does in front of a 800.
I have a Mighty Sound M5 analog delay mini pedal. I set the repeat to barely on but by keeping the amount of delay back a bit it lets my highs thru and I get that same sound but without any loss of bite which I noticed was not happening with the E-H. I only use it when I need to fatten up a sound never for a real delay pedal. Best of all I bought mine on AliExpress for $23 with free shipping.
The EHX engineers probably gave a technical description to the marketing team and they couldn't figure out how to describe it. I'll be giving this pedal another look for sure. Was leaning toward getting an Exotic EP Booster pedal but now....🤔
I could see this coming in handy for many things. It could be a preamp before your drive section, or put after everything as a master eq filter, or use it as a boost for solos. The slap back is a bit niche but I would love this as like an instant Franz Ferdinand machine.
I run 2 pretty much as you describe. #1 iin front of the drives as a preamp, #2 last as a mastering tool. Stacked into a Bluesbreaker-type overdrive is *chef's kiss* perfection
besides Tom, doing the release demo, there are no EHX Spruce Goose Demos ....that's supposed to be EHX's new flagship overdrive...i just wish i could get a few more takes on it. i mean i don't have anymore room on my pedal board, but i might be able to make room.
About time someone else gave this thing its props. I've been using 2 on my board, on and off, since it was released, singing its praises to deaf ears. Good on ya, mate. Cheers
A friend of mine used this with a Wet Dry Wet thing he did. In the center, all analog vintage amp... no reverb... just amp. Left was the output of his Strymon gear into a clean 40w amp... that's what he did most of the time... two amps. But in rehearsal I heard him set up a second 40 or 50w amp for the stereo of the strymon... the other channel... Left...and he used this Analogizer... it blew my mind completely. The hype and digital qualities of the R amp were "erased" by the comb filter, and eq of the L amp. The whole thing was huge. I always meant to try to recreate it... this video reminds me I want to try.
I love the guitar demo, but this thing has me excited for synths and vocals. Inexpensive and really interesting, I love the idea of an analog filter/overdrive. Fantastic video, earned a subscribe for playing and presentation that is great!
Couldn’t have said it better. This and the Cusack Pedal Cracker could give an awesome doubling effect to vocals. And the analog filtering is really intriguing for synths.

I tend to leave it always on just for that little bit more warmth & depth. It’s defo works for me. that spread control (2:55) might be a delay all the way down the dial, but on the lowest delay times you get that phasing effect bc how close the delayed signal is to the dry.
yep, can't believe i didn't think to say that when recording. although what i said is still true; phase IS delay when the delay time is less than a wavelength
@@guitaristwilllane I discovered that “gonk” with my plastic MXR Time Delay a million years ago, and it’s an intriguing texture, but this pedal looks like a more stable way of getting that sound, and a dozen others.
Its basically what the J.Rockett Ape pedal was trying to do except it also has an onboard delay for that signal and it is also running it parallel with the a clean and boosted signal. Almost like a klon accept the distortion or 'clipping circuit' is instead the mild distortion that comes from analog delay in the repeats. and the more you boost the input signal, the more it saturates that analog delay distortion circuit. This was an effort to emulate analog delay and tape delay modules that are often used in the studios simply as pre-amps without any repeats to warm up or live-up a guitar signal. Brittany Howards tone is famous for having a distorted space echo running parallel as its own amp basically. EHX is capitalizing on the 'mystery' of this pedal by not naming it after or even in reference to their competitors, because they would rather it be a knod to their own delay machines, which it is.
I almost bought a used one to use with a mono synth, but couldnt figure out what it actually did. After watching the video I wish I had bought it because... well... these things are dirt cheap second hand, probably because no one quite knows what it does and because a bit of saturation and slap back with extra filtering is something any synthesist should be excited about.
Interesting and adds some nice touches in various respects. Had not seen this one before. And although haven’t looked at the price, being EHX, I’m confident it’s reasonable. Thanks.
Thomann sells it for 78€, that's more than I expected ...but I guess just about everyting did go up in price, even the LPB-1 is 50 bucks now, I think I bought it for less than half, ten years ago or so.

I love this pedal. I use it mainly for recordings, the first half of the spread knob always does the trick to set a synth, guitar, bass or drum machine in the mix, I think it offers a sweet spot that make things sound like a finish record sound, and as you said, it's subtle but significant, great video! there's no many videos about this great pedal, cheers!

I wonder if the phase effect you're getting is because it's adjusting the slapback time in more of a doubler range. I would be curious to see an a/b with a doubler plugin with the eq curve matched
I don't think that spread knob is doing anything different left of noon, it's just reducing the delay time so much that you're almost but not exactly overlaying the original and delayed signal on top of each other. It sounds flangy/phasy, just like on the deco.
