    Are America's Got Talent, BGT and Fool us, good or bad for magicians? I often get approached to perform on these shows but have a few reservations about them. Just thought I'd let you know where I stand in the whole TV Magic realm. Let me know your thoughts about it, is it good for magic or is it destroying the art? I'd love to hear from both sides. :)

    I agree with you on AGT but as for Penn and Teller Fool Us I don't see that as a competition about ratings on TV, obviously they do still care about the ratings but they either fool Penn and Teller or they don't. it's not about who's the best, it's about coming up with cool new ways of performing magic that can fool even the most professional magicians around and I think that's really cool and will really push magic to the next level.

      Nathgamer it is still a competition, but everyone is competing against Penn and Teller. To a certain extent this is a method of feeding their ego.

    • @noinch
      @noinch 7 років тому +7

      Nathgamer I do agree FU has taken out the competitive aspect as much as possible. But I think the trade off is that the judging is extremely suspect. Lots of those outcomes have really weird edits. Jay Sankey actually fooled P&T; later he hinted he wasn't supposed to and so didn't. It's just as easy for the duo to fake being fooled when they weren't. I don't for one second believe Mac King fooled them.
      Otherwise it's a very entertaining show and good for the art.

    • @ThomasFinegar
      @ThomasFinegar 7 років тому +5

      It is not in any way about feeding their ego. That has absolutely nothing to do with it. As performers no one can deny that they're some of the best magicians alive today, but they are not claiming to be all-knowing. The real reason they do that show is because they want to be fooled. They talk about that all the time. They also want to encourage a new age of magic in which people are developing new methods. That brings the magic community into the future instead of relying solely on hundred year old sleights.

      @reznovvazileski3193 7 років тому +1

      Penn and Teller do put ratings in first place because that's how the market works in TV bizz sadly. However, as they are a magic show they are allowed more room for talking about how amazing a magician actually is to pull of what he did even though they saw what he did. That's one major difference what makes Fool Us a far better platform than AGT but still not the most ideal way of branding yourself compared to building your own brand.

    I like Fool Us, I see it more as a display than a competition; like an excuse to show new young magician. AGT is totally a competition, which does not have any logic because you can compare a dance act with a singer and a magician.

    This is great! I've auditioned for AGT in the past, and I waited 9 hours for a 90 second audition. Then, it took about 9-10 weeks to find out I didn't make it.
    I would've rather been told that I didn't make it right then and there.

    Some "unknown" magicians benefit from the popularity of these shows. In most cases they are more well known than before and even if their performance doesn't go viral, they probably get more gigs and chances to perform for people. Thats one reason, why these contests may be supporting. On the other hand, this "popularity" may be just for a short time.

    Yo Chris. Good thoughts. I'm just a hobbyist, I'll do simple tricks for my students in the classroom from time to time just to be that "cool" teacher (probably doesn't work) but yeah all the time they'll tell me like "yo you should be on AGT!!!" and it's always like...right after I do a self-working trick and so like in my head I'm just like "no. no I should not." And so now thanks to this video I can have that discussion with them of like art for art's sake, not art for the sake of competition, etc. so THANK YOU for bringing this up and giving me some framework/talking points to give to my students when they blow things out of proportion. Appreciate it.

    It's quite an amazing community. I've messaged pretty big names in the magic industry and 90% of the time they take the time to respond genuinely. It's something I will never leave not only for the amazing art that comes with it but the humble people (mostly) that are so real. Which is quite an ironic statement.

    I was reminded of something I read from Neil Peart (Drummer- Rush) talking about motorcycle riding he said: "When I see someone improperly dressed, wearing shorts and a T-shirt, I see it as a failure of imagination. They can't imagine what can happen. I cringe, because I can imagine what can happen to them and they seem unable to." I think this VLOG is a good reminder that there is always something that one may not be thinking of, and that no matter what you are doing, think it through, don't let a failure of imagination put you in a position that you weren't prepared for. I think if one has considered all the things you mention, and they still feel that this kind of show would get them where they want to go, they should go for it, but go for it having considered all the possibilities. As always, nice VLOG man.

    Good video man, I feel a similar way about those kind of competitions, like not all of them receive the attention and retribution they deserve. Although at the same time, If you don't see it as a competition, it's great to watch so many well presented performances. The middle ground, as you say, is where it's at.

    I'm with you on everything you've talked about. One thing you didn't mention that I will say is that AGT has been something that has kept magic active in people's minds. I often get compliments saying "You're like X magician on TV!" whether it's an AGT magician or some famous one. This has two benefits: it helps keep me "relevant" to the laymen and also reinforces to me that people are enjoying my magic. I also like to believe that when my presentation reminds people of these "greats" it helps keep me booked for gigs consistently. So all in all: I think these shows help us all long term and you've pretty much nailed the risks that can happen to those who get into things like AGT.

    I've had such a big issue with a lot of tricks on AGT getting a standing-O that the person just got off the shelf (Invisible deck, ambitious card, that Flipbook deck thingy etc). As far as Penn and teller, i see a difference here, i think aside from ratings Penn and Teller are helping the magic community, getting people started in magic, inspiring others to start in the craft. Personally watching a few performances on Fool Us has given me a bit of creativity to build a few tricks of my own. That's just my opinion :)

    I agree with about 90% of what you said. You were spot on describing how these competition shows operate. And it applies to all the different shows. It's why I haven't tried out for American idol or the voice despite repeated suggestions that I do.
    In the end it really is about what makes them ratings. It's why Idol was quickly known for all the train wrecks that would audition for the panel judges. You have to be good enough to pass a series of panels before auditioning for the celebrity judges on camera and yet how did all of the bad auditions make it? They were selected for being so bad because it got the ratings.
    All that being said, I differ from you about one show in particular. Penn and Teller's Fool Us.
    I see a big distinction between Fool Us and the super competitive, "there can be only one" type shows like AGT. Fool Us isn't really a competition between magicians. It's a showcase in which each act can win.
    They each get the same chance to perform well enough and/or present a routine that simply fools Penn and Teller, who are looking to feel that sense of wonder and awe that magic provides for so many, a feeling they seldom experience anymore since the large majority of magic methods and tricks have been demystified for them through their decades of study of the art form. In essence, the true challenge is to magicians to innovate and expand and create the next generation of effects and techniques. This is probably one of the best ways to engage the magic community to progress the art form and provides the reward of a considerable career boost to each person on the show that isn't at the expense of someone else's efforts.
    Penn and Teller also celebrate each magician that comes on. They are very uplifting of each contestant that comes on and presents their best, even if it didn't fool them. They provide positive critiques and praise each performers' visions.
    I believe this particular show and it's format helps inspire new talent. I can personally attest that it got me back into seeking out magical knowledge. It introduced back to magic and to many great magicians that I'd never heard of. I saw the ones I really connected with and looked them up. My children were asking to watch more and more and were quickly exposed to a large cross section of different branches of magic. We are all now studying together. It's also true that if it had not been for Fool Us, I wouldn't be on this channel enjoying and connecting with the actual community of aspiring and professional magicians.
    On that note, thank you for all that you do and for sticking to your ethics. I appreciated the way that you approached this topic and I feel it garners nothing but respect for your personal decision regarding the matter.
    I also want to take this chance to say that you are also truly inspiring and it has been my pleasure to delve into your channel and learn so much. You have truly helped so many people in more ways than one could possibly count and that is truly magical.
    Sincerely!

      As a caveat, regarding Penn and Teller's Wizard Wars, I would agree that that fits right in with AGT and other competition shows as a show made for ratings and subject to all the points you made in the video.

    The point there is not the first place but for many magicians to really have the chance to meet Penn and Teller not only as a fan. And the competition is not about the 1rst place but about the actual skills both technical and perfirming judged by two legends. I believe this closes out the factor of personal opinion at least in theory. On the other hand sometimes I realy sure that sometimes P&T just say they've got fooled for the sake of inviting the contestant to their show.
    Other than that I think that is the best concept I've seen so far for a specific art branch.

    My feel on them is that AGT and BGT is for the magicians who are starting in. It is for the beginners and magicians who are less known. Penn and Teller is for magicians that have done many different things, and they are bigger magicians if that makes since. That is what I think. Also what book recommendation do you have that teaches card control.

    Perfect insights on something that I had wondered myself, especially the “not everyone wins”
    aspect on shows like these and how that affects “contestant” magicians. I too would rather 1 million followers
    even just occasionally watching me perfect my craft rather than 1 million “one night watchers” any day.
    Keep up the great work........and thoughts Chris. 👍🏻
    I’ve learned so much from you already and looking forward to learning a lot more.
    My nephews and mom and dad love the new magic I’ve been able to bring into their lives because of a few
    people(on UA-cam)like you.
    Thanks.

    There are some really some Great magicians on AGT, But sometimes it‘s just like circus magic from the 90‘s

    Very nuanced discussion of the topic. And I agree when it comes to the "got Talent" shows.
    But Penn&Teller is different because multiple performers can fool them and sometimes none of them do.
    So lumping this show in with the competition shows IMHO needs some more explanation/justification. I mean it's still a production team behind it, so I'm sure it's not all fine and dandy.

    Honestly it's kind of ironic, but I only found your channel because of AGT and the pen and teller show. I'm sure there are more people like me you were talking about getting a big influx of viewers a bit back and I was part of that. You appeared in my recommended because of these guys, and I'm glad your channel did. So in a way what I'm saying is that this subject is good for UA-camrs that aren't completely out there yet

    On the other hand AGT, Fool Us, BTG, are making magic much more popular, and inspiring other people to try and do magic tricks. I'm an example of that, I started by seeing magic in these shows, and mostly Fool Us inspired me to do magic. I'm learning for about two months now, and loving so much it. Maybe if wasn't for these shows I wouldn't be doing it now. And specifically Penn and Teller's show teach people a lot on how to react to magic, to not give away everything, and if you are to say something about the performance, do it carefully. I know your side is also something to think about, but in my experience I really love all those magicians on TV as an inspiration.

    with this awesome chat in mind. Would you think about reviewing your favourite contest show acts? maybe commentate on any cool moves that you see? I don't know magic but I love learning about this world from a practical angle. There is a lot of context that is very interesting. I'll be watching all the time. Oh btw, I bought your gold knights cards. they are BOSS. soo beautiful and they feel amazing. Is there somewhere where I can go to buy a print of any cards so I can hang them up on my wall as art?
    Cheers

    It is very cool to have those ring lights in the middle of your eyes. But when you look away from the camera, the rings look a bit awkward when not around your pupils. Just felt like mentioning it.

    Sorry mate, the only reason I watch and subscribe to your channel is I happened to watch Shin Lim on Penn & Teller and LOVED it! After scouring You Tube for all his vids I came across your's. Shin just happened to capture my attention to magic of all kinds but mostly card magic. I now actively look for all card magic on You Tube, yours included! I think that is worth something.

    That is very true Chris. It is really just a bunch of bull of TV producers and drama. I like to see the show but after hearing you, I want to do something about it. My thoughts are really that if you have a stable platform and it's going well for you, like yours, then their is no need. However, if you are starting out, it might sound like a decent option. I personally would go the UA-cam way but there are a lot of people who would choose AGT OR BGT OR any of these reality shows. Those are my thoughts and I am so waiting for the deck of cards of yours. So excited. Also I am heading up to montreal right now so really wishing to bump into you. Can't wait
