    Hey Chris!!! Thx for all the tips!!! I live in Hong Kong and it was the Chinese New Year festival so a bunch of relatives came over to eat. I did the 2 minute stand on toilet thing, the "I'm in charge" thing, the finger squeeze.... and I absolutely NAILED it. This video really helped me a lot. Thx so much!!! Oh and when will you "make" a new deck? Cuz I love your deck designs.

    Things that make me confident when I perform:
    1. Good outfit. When you feel good about your looks, you just seem a better entertainer from audiences perspective.
    2. Great tricks. I know tricks that work best for me and I only not know how to do them but I also know how to perform them.
    3. Showing off. Do flourishes and suffle a deck or just play with rubber bands etc. Makes you seem more mysterious. They may even ask if you're magician. Be bold and flashy.
    4. Knowing your environment. I usually perform on a local mall or cafe. Those are places where I hang out with my friends and they make me relaxed.
    5. Nice crowd. My audience is usually either my friends or random-ish people who are like my friends friends friends or something like that. Connect and ask names. Look into their eyes.
    I've been practicing for 1,5 years now and I start to feel good about my performances.
    Chris' videos have been a great help

      Hey dude, don't let that hold you back!!! I am also a starving artist starting a more serious journey into magic than I have in the past... it was, due in part to a similar mindset that delayed me so long (oh, can't afford to get started)...
      But there are soooooo many effects you can start with that are completely inexpensive and which use everyday objects you will find about your house...
      My magic collection has grown in a matter of weeks through this realisation and I have spent only like... $20 on cards and sharpies... I also purchased two cheap starter kits (for the invisible thread and thumb tip... although I wish I had just bought higher quality individual items over the kit)
      Run with the insipration Chris gives you dude! You can do it! Check out Jerek 1:20 for some card ideas and Jay Sankey for ideas with everyday objects... these three guys, Chris, Jerek and Jay have been a HUGE help in understanding that this is not the hurdle it seems to be!!!!
      HAVE A MAGICAL DAY!

    Hi Chris.
    I've been entertaining for years. Mostly kids. Tonight I have a gig at a "Very posh" restaurant.
    Got my tricks ready (3 x 3 + extra for special people).
    Practiced and suddenly I got the shakes.
    So I hunted you down for a little bit of "go get 'em Tigress'.
    Thanks.
    I have noticed that one thing that really boosts my performance and confidence is that dreaded 4 letter word: PRACTICE...um maybe 8 letters.
    And have my sets, setup for easy access and reset.
    Just as a bit 'o insight for tonight.
    * Back left pocket: Deck o Card - Biddle trick/ 2 card Monte/ B-Wave
    * Back right pocket: Paper Clipped with special deck to perform for host / Color Monte
    * Front left Vest Pocket: Mirage et trios/ Charming Chinese challenge/ 3 coin trick
    * In front right and left: Ribs & Whiskey and Hopping half.
    After I make my first round (about 90 people) I return with Cups and balls in hand, Rope in back left pocket and P'sychd in front right.
    Having practiced these for a few hours last night with Boyfriend and a cheat sheet in my little carry case, I believed my confidence should be up and I should be ok.
    Still got the shakes so Thanks for that Boost.
    Steph

      Hi Chris.
      Well your tips worked.
      I performed at the Lanam Club in Andover Ma.
      And it was SOOOOOO Crowded.
      90 people PACKED into a 20 by 30 space.
      There as more space available but they all wanted to be in one room.
      As I gathered up my courage, I approached and performed.
      All my sets were ready but mostly I performed Sanders Fiber Optics Rope trick, Hopping halves, 2 card Monte and Paper clip with a cups and balls thrown in. The best laid plans and such.
      Overall a huge success though.
      Thanks again for the tips.
      Totally worked for me.
      Steph

    lol I used to watch street magic videos and noticed that the magician always involves the cameraman more. so i thought that I should get a "camera man" so it would not be awkward cause people wouldn't mind seeing a trick for a video. it ACTUALLY feels alot more comfortable and its very natural reason to have someone else you know with you. even if they aren't recording, the act of them being there is a real help. give it a try with your friends trust me its really good.

    • @ChrisRamsay52
      @ChrisRamsay52  7 років тому +12

      That's true in some cases, but I've seen people who just hate being on camera. So it doesn't always work. Thanks for chiming in!

    • @TheNBKiller
      @TheNBKiller 6 років тому

      If someone comes up to me with a person filming them, I, sort of, sub-consciously feel as if they are more legitimate, more renowned, them someone who does not. Now, I know this isn't always the case, but it does help validate the randomness of someone coming up to you to perform a trick. You know it's for a video, it's not as awkward.

    • @Varksterable
      @Varksterable 6 років тому

      When I was at college I got interested in photography.
      I'd never even dream of talking to a complete stranger - unless I had a camera in hand.
      Then it seemed perfectly reasonable to confidently ask random people to do all sorts of things in order to get a particular shot.
      They very often said no, of course. But the camera being there completely changed ME, even if it didn't change them. And if they did say no I didn't feel any of the rejection I would otherwise have felt.
      So yes; a camera being present can produce some very odd psychological effects!

    Anyone here from germany, because i always want to do streetmagic, but for me it seems to be way more difficult here in germany to find someone who want to see magic, then in the usa or canada. I will try your tipps and hopefully i will get some good feedback because i´m a very very shy person and i am not that brave. So i´m going to test your tipps. Mr. Ramsey you are the magician who i look up to. Everything you put out there helped me with my live so much. Thank you for being an inspiriational person. PEACE

      Yes i know that, but i think he started magic after he went to canada,
      so he may haven´t done streetmagic in a small city in germany. That why i
      asked for someone who has done streetmagic in smaller citys

      @DarkKnight198 7 років тому +2

      I'll do Magic in Germany, although in a bigger City on a regular basis (DoubleLifted Magic on UA-cam, I'm the tall guy) and you are absolutely right. It IS harder to perform here. In the US for instance people are used to strangers just talking to them but over here it is very rarely seen, except when they wanna sell you stuff.
      I'll try to help. First, Chris did say that vulnerability makes you seem human, but being shy makes people not take you serious. I know you can't just make anxiety go away since i was super shy too back in the day. So here is what I would do:
      Grab one of your buddies, hit the town, either by day or night (bars and clubs work great) and just approach people. It seems scary i know but you'll definently HAVE to learn how to overcome your anxiety. Talk to girls, groups of dudes, doesn't matter. You will get funny looks. You will get rejected. It WILL suck. BUT over the course of just one day/night you will develop such a thick skin, that you don't even need to pep talk yourself or anything of the sort. Trust me, Man i did exactly this. Once you learn that people are just regular people and nothing really bad is going to happen you will have SUCH an easier time to approach.
      Reguarding approaching for magic this is what I always do here in Germany:
      Literally walk up to someone, deck in hand and say "Hey i'm gonna show you something cool, pick a card" and 99% of the time. They will. German people are more distant and cautious about strangers but what this does is it doesn't give them time to think about it. Note Chris' bit about being alpha. You just come up and order them to pick a card. They will obey.
      TL;DR get out of your comfort zone, just approach someone and order them to pick a card. They will. Trust me.

      Got the same problem years back... I live in the south in a small town. Yeah it's super hard but here is my advise: self confidence as Chris claims is the key to approach people, but in Germany ( you know the mentality..) do not ask if the wanted to see am magic trick! You will fail 99% of the time. Create interest, ask a question, where they couldn't reject you with a 'No, I don't wanna see a trick', like the flaming wallet for instance ask if they lost their wallet, they'll shut up and look at you, light it and dang there you go, you broke the ice.

      Sebastian Schachner Hast so Recht! Ich glaub in Deutschland denken alle, das ist nur was für kleine Kinder. Was noch dazu kommt ist, dass die meisten Deutschen einfach nur sehr schwer mit Fremden kommunizieren können/wollen.

    Spot on! I'm a Hypno-Therapist, among other things, NLP is something I use ALL the time. Not to control people as much as for clear and simple communication.
    I got over stranger anxiety by taking the mental attitude of having something important to impart, something someone else needs to know. It usually takes the form of a sincere compliment to break the ice. You've done a great job Chris!😎

  • @bernhard8540
    @bernhard8540 2 роки тому

    I have tried to explain this to some friends many times but they just can't keep it in their head when it comes time to not cave in or back down or etc.. idk how or why but I used to be extremely shy as a kid and teenager but then idk what happened but I started realizing exactly what you were saying about how others follow the leader and it has pushed me very far in my life, it's not having to be the biggest chest in the room but a simple acknowledgment that I'm not one who folds or is just going to blindly get in line and follow because I have a brain and I try to keep it sharp. It's sort of crazy just how dull the world has let their brains become and I cant help but feel that it really shifted when everyone got online everyday and saw others supposedly doing better than everyone else. When in reality a lot of those people's lives are way more crap and twisted then the people who feel belittle from seeing those posts. Always tell yourself that no matter how bad you think it is, it's really not a big deal in the grand scheme of things and that there are way, way, worse things that could happen than someone saying they don't have time to see a trick or they were floored by your magic ❤❤❤

Here is an idea, make a video of Chris (the awkward version) perform magic for people in the street with a camera that isn't visible by the audience... That way, he will be like the average new magician and I personally thing that will motivate many people to actually try and perform for strangers.

I worked in retail and sales and I'm currently going to business school and something that I took from my classes and work is that you feel a lot happier and more relaxed when you smile, even if it's just for a few seconds. It can completely change the way you carry yourself almost instantly and you'll instantly be more approachable to other people.

    Dude this is awesome! Perfect timing, I've been practicing magic for a few weeks now and I just got back from trying a few tricks out in public!
    I've always been timid in nature and I really, really liked the "creating a bridge" tip where you pinch your fingers when something goes right! I'm going to give that a try next time I'm out, thanks Chris!

    Hey Chris! Great tips man! Been using a few those. Did not know about the physical and mental trigger, that one is good to know, and the interview tip will be handy. . . . .so thanks for those.
    Here are a few things I have either been told about or picked up that help with performance/approach anxiety.
    1. To help lessen your hands being noticeably shaky (you really cannot keep them from totally shaking, unless you use a beta blocker) you can contract/tighten/squeeze the muscles in both or one leg (the whole leg). Do this for a few minutes and it will help lessen your shaky hands and make them less noticeable.
    2. Do vocal warm ups pre performance. Singers and stage actors do this to help with annunciation on stage and when I was doing theatre it helped tremendously. So for instance, say out loud a bunch of different tongue twisters and humming at different volume levels will help with volume control.
    3.If you have time, before you even leave do some jogging/jumping jacks in place. This releases endorphins (which you talked about endorphins briefly). This should also make you feel more relaxed. Obviously if you do this enough you will get sweaty and showing to a performance all sweaty is a big no no. So do it just for a few minutes.
    4. Watch a funny video and laugh. Seriously! Laughing is great relief if your are stressed.
    Keep up the videos Chris!!

    I totally agree with what you say man 👍, i still suffer the magic shakes lol, but one thing i can say is, don't be afraid of failure, because failure is a part of learning magic, the more you fail the more youl get comfortable with messing up, youl be able to fix it over time youl have to understand failure to overcome this, remember if you mess up just act like (DOH) so the audience think this was ment to happen use this to your advantage and work your way around it make a little comedy out of it, 1 tip I've learned is go to pubs where people are drunk, it has dark lighting, because these people probably won't remember you the next day lol, so this is easier on your mind mentally 👍

    Hey Chris thanks for this vid. It helped me a lot. I preform magic around local bars in my area and I never wanted to walk up to strangers. With your tips, I dragged my buddy with me one night and started standing straight and I must have preformed to 30+ that night. Wasn't the greatest tricks I've done but it was a start. Thanks man.

    Awesome tips Chris!👏🏼One thing I like to do is get out my cards and start playing with them like doing a spring or cyclone flick or just small stuff to get kids and adults kind of glancing my way. Then after looking down at my cards for a while, I'll look up and catch someone's eye and say "You guys wanna see something cool?"

    Definitely going to try the standing in the power position. I did a small show in my school with about 30 people and got so conscious about justifying everything I did I let my nervous get the better of me. I got great feedback but because of my nervous I didn't enjoy the performance and give the tricks the justice they deserved.
    Btw loved when you mentioned positive reinforcement - A level psychology operant conditioning

    Thanks, Chris! I've been waiting to hear what you had to say about approach anxiety. I have social phobia but have been practicing card magic for about two years. I've performed for all of my friends and family but just can't get over my fear of others. I've decided to have my next "performance" be at work. There's about 10 people in my office and they know I work with cards. The moment I pull out a deck, I know I'm going to have a bigger audience than I've ever had. So I've been pretty nervous about it - and I know these people. I'm going to take all of your tips seriously - I may even try a stranger before I try it at work... if I can summon the stones to do it. Anyway, thanks again! Love your work, I'm a big fan.

    Oh, something that i noticed. Once i was doing some tricks on a bar to a group of friends, and I asked if they liked magic. Funny enough in the end the person that was showing the best corporal signs was the one that said "not really", so don't be frightened by the guys / girls that tell you that!

    Hey dude I just wanted to add something. If you go to a social event i.e. Bar, restaurant, party etc... always look the part, because if you look like a hobo at a restaurant no one will feel comfortable or might even want you near them so say if you go to a bar just wear something like casual clothes (e.g. Jeans and tshirt), restaurant suit or nice clothes just look the part so that you can fit in and people will feel comfortable
