I think the takeaway is that if you buy a high quality helmet and take good care of it keeping it clean inside/out and stored well, it will last a very long time - much longer than the 5-7 years you quote from the uncredited article. I'd definitely get rid of a helmet that I allowed to get grungy. Regarding your comment about styrofoam deteriorating - isn't one of the environmental problems of styrofoam that it does NOT deteriorate? New helmet sure is pretty though.

I have an LS2 Horizon I bought in 2019. Wore daily for about a year & a half. I mostly wear it for highway trips & my wife wears it when she rides because she like the color & flip-up face. I've been wearing an Icon Airflite since 2020. They both probably need to be retired.
Your getting close but I would stretch it to the 7 year mark if you have taken good care of them which you probably have!

20 some odd years ago. I bought a Troy Lee hot wheels Shoei.
Mainly because it has almost every common color and matches all my bikes, besides being unique.
I used it forever. It's very old and a little yucky. Still looks great on the outside. Almost spotless.
I saw a brand hot wheels posted online for $1200. It's a collectors piece.
Eventually the price came down to $200. I snapped it up. It is actually new, never used.
Of course it's super old school but pretty cool that I can use the same style once in a while for the novelty.
I do have a range of helmets from new to nicely broke in.
I have several bikes so one helmet won't do.
Shoei is my brand.
Now I have a bike with orange on it 🤦...... here we go again 😏
Haha the struggle continues! BUt I do love Shoei, this is my second helmet from them and damn its nice! And matchs way to good to pass up hahah
