- emotionallynake... - I have a benign non-acoustic schwannoma next to my brain stem in the cranial nerve area. Two craniotomies, 1999 and 2000, and cranial reconstruction in 2003. Tumor grew back 2014. My youngest son died by suicide in 2015. I had to undergo gamma knife radiation in Buffalo NY in 2016 and six months after the GK suffered dysphasia and vocal cord paresis. Just woke up one day and had it. Had a year of speech and swallow therapy, vocal fold injections which didn't last long enough. Neurosurgeon had to declare that the tumor was fried and would not cause more issues before getting cleared for the Thyroplasty. They cut in the neck. Small incision and insert the implant under twilight anesthesia which means you are awake for most of it. But it was not scary. Pain has not been bad at all. Feels like a sore throat. Overnight in the hospital.
