  • Back with another Every Major God in Mythology video, this time we're tackling thunder gods. From some of the most well known gods like the Greek god Zeus and Norse Deity, Thor, to lesser known deities like the dragon or serpent like Sugaar from the Basque mythos. This video also features 3 interesting thunder gods from Japanese legends and a pair of twins that assisted Zeus by holding his thunderbolts. Featuring gods from every continent (apart from Antarctica). With a short introduction to the tales and myths using lighthearted animation.
Disclaimer: Mythology is a diverse tapestry of stories often coming from oral tradition. Because of this, different versions exist. It's important to recognize that myths evolve and vary across regions, eras, and storytellers.

I found it ODD to say the least, that many thunder gods/sky fathers from completely unrelated cultures have so many common traits, like, having a connection with goats/bulls and chariots, using an axe/hammer or club, and battling a sea dragon/serpent, quite odd.

    • @tacoshop7722

It is because they are not unrelated, there is a older common origin for them in the Indo-European culture and Proto-Indo-European cultures. Bulls being a very big deal in those older religions.

@@tacoshop7722 I see, but some are not from indo-european roots, like african, asian and meso-american, could it be that these myths are even older than we thought? before the rise of the indo-european themselvs? I mean, they also have to have a origin to their myths... it's a interesting subject to think about.

I don't know much about Native American culture, but regarding East Asian practices like in Shinto, there was indeed significant Indian influence on Shinto. In fact, many gods worshiped in Shinto have roots in India, thanks to the form of Buddhism that influenced Japan. Numerous deities from Hinduism were introduced to the island chain. When Shinto didn't adopt these gods directly, it incorporated aspects of them. Similar interactions occurred in China, Buddhism spread across Asia. So, that's probably why some of the East Asian gods have similar aspects to those found in Indo-European thunder gods.

If I may, I'd like to add Tupã (pronouced /tuˈpã/), a Tupi-Guarani deity, from Brazilian Indigenous Mythology.
He is the god of thunder and lighting, as well as the supreme god of the Tupi-Guarani pantheon, is considered the father of every other god and rules the world.
He is the creator of the universe, more specifically, the creator of Light.
He lives in the Sun and he's married to Jaci and is normally described as a benevolent and merciful god. 😊
There's way more to him, but I am in no way shape or form a specialist.

From the eight body parts he cut off, there came eight deities related to the volcanoes of Japan; and from the blood from the sword that was splattered at the rocks gave birth to several more deities related to the elements of nature, the blood that dripped on its handle gave birth to Takemikazuchi.

      I know about thunderbirds.
Idk much about north American mythology, but since I saw in this video the thunderers and how they may turn into birds I thought they may be connected? Do you know if that could be the case? Or do these creeds not have anything in common? Idrk where the respective people lived

@@lucabertani225 it’s not mythology. We still practice our culture to this day. We acknowledge the Thunder Birds as living beings. As we acknowledge all living things in this world has a spirit. Down to the rock. That is something Christianity and the Roman Catholic Church never took away from us.

I'm not sure how it is for other Polys, but in Maori mythology we also have a Storm God and his name is Tawhirimatea, Lord of the Wind and Tides as he constantly fights with his brother, Tangaroa, who despises him for disrupting his calm seas. But Tawhiri is widely accepted as the God of Weather all together.

P.S. In Maori Mythology, Maui isn't a demigod off rip, but a normal human(Some reference him as a chieftain, though many others disagree, but all Maori say he was human, not demigod). For starters, his Magic Fish hook is actually the Jawbone of his deceased Grandma, which he used to not only fish up the North Island of NZ(WIth the help of his brothers), but to also stop the sun from making everyday and night shorter. Also it is not the fish hook that gives him polymorphing abilities, but the power he was given by Ranginui for saving the Seven Sisters of Matariki.

I can provide you the information about the why lord Indira was considered as a role play it has something to do with Bhudhhism.
Current Hinduism is 4 Transient of Vedic Hinduism from early, Middle and mature and lastly Current Hinduism.
In Vedic period 6 Gods Agni,Indra, Surya, Vishnu and Shiva was the prominent Gods but Only the three Varna can do the worship of Surya,Indra and Agni wheather your Varna didn't play a role in the worshipping of Vishnu and Shiva.
When the Tantric practice started increasing and Bhudhhism Mahanaya was Shake the brahmical order then the Brahmin started making Hinduism more simple by starting to identify Demi Gods with lord Vishnu or Lord Shiva.
To do this Brahmin showed Indra as a Man with overconfident, ahankar and Jealousy ,Anger and Lust.
Still Surya is important part of Hinduism because of Mithali Brahmin and bhakti movement.
Agmi for the purification or wedding day but still Tribal in India worship Indra but most of those tribe culture got blend in Christianity(Indian tribes who got converted into Christianity)

It's actually Lei Zu which is the highest Chinese thunder god im pretty sure, Lei Gong is just the oldest.
According to Taoist Scripture - ( 《無上九霄玉清大梵紫微玄都雷庭玉經》 Wu Shang Jiu Xiao Yu Qing Da Fan Zi Wei Xuan Du Lei Ting Yu Jing): Thunder Patriarch (雷祖 Lei Zu) is the avatar of the NINTH SON of 'Fu Li Primeval Lord of Heaven' (浮黎元始天尊 - Fu Li Yuan Shi Tian Zun), known as The Perfect King of Jade Clarity - Yu Qing Zhen Wang (玉清真王).
The Thunder Patriarch lives in the 'Jade Mansion of Divine Heaven' (神霄玉府 - Shen Xiao Yu Fu), in the midst of the Pure Vital Breath of the Azure Heaven ( 碧霄梵氣 Bi Xiao Fan Qi), 2300 miles from the Thunder City (雷城 - Lei Cheng). The '81 Zhang' high Thunder City is the place where the Heavenly Court administers thunders, to the left of which is the Jade Pivot Five Thunder Agency (玉樞五雷使 Yu Shu Wu Lei Shi) and to the right of which is the Jade Mansion Five Thunder Agency (玉府五雷使 - Yu Fu Wu Lei Shi).
Since ancient times in China, Grandpa Thunder Lei Gong (雷公) had already been worshipped. But it was at the end of the Northern Song that the Thunder Agency (雷部 Lei Bu), in the charge of the 'Heavenly Lord of Universal Transformation Whose Voice of Thunder Resonates with the Origin of the Nine Heavens' (九天应元雷声普化天尊), was incorporated into the Daoist divinity system.
