Because they treat their games like kids are the only target audience, ignoring most of the fan-base that actually wants a good game to be played for a long amount of time supported with updates, rts players and action-rpg players. Huge mistake. That thing is effectively killing every minecraft spin-off game they make. Minecraft spin-off games will always remain an oversimplified generic game of its genre with "Minecraft" written on the title.

I think the bggest issue with Mojang is that they think their only customer base are kids. Everything has to be as simplistic and familiy friendly as possible.
But thats simply wrong. The most invested players are those that where kids when Minecraft came out, you know, 10 years ago. They are all in their 20s or even older.

Honestly, as a result of Mojang's focus on marketing to kids, I just play modded to the gills and rarely update my install unless a new killer mod comes out that isn't on my current "standing on" version. They won't get more complex themselves? Cool, I've got Apotheosis, Create and like _twelve_ addons for it, Simply Swords, BetterCombat, and Curios. Mojang can keep their patently-pointless mob votes and 'archaeology' that will no doubt make other, more interesting lore theories obsolete.

Fun fact: The highest time played that anyone has played Minecraft legends on steam is 116 hours and there is only one person that has over 100 hours in that game (other than a person that has 3k botted hours)

As of January 10, 2024, the Minecraft Legends Twitter account announced that Minecraft:Legends has been discontinued meaning our worst fears have been realized. Back in June of 2023, a dev mentioned that the game had only 6 months of support left (despite the game having come out 3 months prior) and, 6 months later, that time has finally run out. The fact that the game died after only 9 months compared to other spinoffs is kinda sad tbh...

I haven't played Legends, but based on what I've heard and seen, it makes me miss Minecraft: Story Mode. While it wasn't an open-world game and had limited combat abilities, the player had a bit of freedom to alter the plot's direction and even change the ending, especially with Season 2.

Minecraft Story Mode was super weird to me. It has the Minecraft IP, branding, mobs and blocks, etc., but the gameplay is literally as far from Minecraft as you can get. Instead of an open world with no story where you can do whatever you want, it's a linear story-based "game" where you can only follow a few specific paths. Still more interesting to me than Legends, though.

The game would have fared better as an actual RTS like Supreme Commander mixed with Total War. You start in a village with a village square, build woodcutters and miners who gather a slow trickle of resources, use those to build some basic troops like the plank golems and slowly build your forces while the piglins do the same and send waves of attacks. You're soft-locked from some area's due to high tier enemies, and you expand around slowly growing finding new resources and upgrades, upgrading buildings and technology, finding new golems and building a force of hundreds of units to march over the overworld to face off against the piglin swarm and set up a defensive zone around a portal to let your sappers mine the obsidian blocks instead of having basically any golem just hit it enough to destroy the portal structure giving the game an attack and defence vibe with it because the piglins can bring in another horde of soldiers to try and stop you so you better make sure you're reinforcing your front.
But that's my thoughts on it. I played through the whole game and haven't touched it since, kinda forgot about it honestly that's how forgettable it was.

    • @alphabros5226
      @alphabros5226 9 місяців тому +18

Wholeheartedly agree. The current game is too simplistic with its gameplay, and would've definitely benefitted from something a little more distanced from regular minecraft with the player. Also, the idea of special sappers to destroy the portals would be a clever way to make it more strategic as you said.

That's me at 8:24 (Phineapoo1313) playing in that initial release-week tournament. This game had me HOOKED at the get go, for about a week. There was a ton of promise with this game if it was updated regularly. The concerns mentioned in the video were definitely prevalent from day one, and a few of us found some strategies that broke the meta in multiplayer pretty quickly.
Multiplayer was pretty much gonna have be the saving grace for this game. If they were to turn this game around at all, it had to come from reaching out to the community and adding/changing the things that the community was wanting or needing. That meta break I mentioned was brought up, but I didn't end up seeing much of a change to it at all, basically making it another mode with a very repetitive feel. I feel that they probably had about 3 chances to course correct, with at least one of those before release even happened. There was at least some small communication during that first week, but the radio silence afterwards was hard to take on.
I hope that a miracle happens and they can get some of that interest back, even if I don't end up coming back. I worry that this lack of communication or disconnect with the community will infect and kill the other games they make over time, including Minecraft itself.

Furthermore, during the entire most recent Minecraft Live, the entire chat was constantly filled with ABSOLUTELY NOTHING BUT #stopthemobvote which Mojang hasn’t commented on once.
The ENTIRE COMMUNITY collectively decided on what they think would be best for the game, and Mojang didn’t even say a word in reply.
This lack of communication is a very common trend among Mojang and the fact that they continue to pump out “interactive community content” on their channels whilst actively ignoring the community, makes me think they’re doing it on purpose.
This is quite disappointing from Mojang in my opinion.

Think about how many times a Minecraft spinoff has gone down the drain with little support, lack of content, lack of fun, etc. It's a bigger problem than we realize and because of this, it really makes Mojang's team look like the bad guy here.

From how you described it, Minecraft Legends seems like as if Mojang spent 5 years making a really boring RTS Minecraft map and made people pay momey to play it, except in this case it’s an entirely different game and there’s no reason for it to feel so limited.

I really get the impression that the Mojang team just didn't want to make this game. They really did nothing to help support it as it released and just left it to die. I dont find it to hard to believe that they where pressured by microsoft to make a new minecraft game but where genuinely not interested in doing so but had to do so anyway.

I never played this one but I was actually pretty bummed when Minecraft earth shutdown. It was pretty fun to play. I think it just had really bad timing when the whole game was based on being out and about and then covid hit.

They should re-release Minecraft Earth now right since we can all go out, never played Minecraft Earth, was thinking of trying it out but didn't know it was completely shutdown. That's sad

Its the same as the mainline minecraft team, I wonder how one can make the lamest updates ever, year after year, when a single mod maker can pump out 10x the content in the same timeframe.

The sad part is: Whatever they add into a new failed game -> It won't make it to the actual game because they want "unique ideas" or they fear that the new stuff in the game is the cause of the low popularity (which is also wrong. Many people would love to see some of the things implemented into the vanilla minecraft game).

0:38 Correction: Minecraft Legends was on Gamepass at launch so there being 3 million players at launch doesn’t mean it sold 3 million copies, and the numbers if probably much lower.

A lesson Mojang and Microsoft needs to learn is that the Minecraft brand is not powerful enough by itself. It needs to be attached to a good game, end of.

It's pretty obvious now that "new" Mojang is a sh!t company. Everything they make sucks. Minecraft only survives because it was made by the "old" Mojang and because of the modding community.

Original creator of some incredible IP gets bored and decides to do something else. Sells them to a megacorpo and now everything they produce sucks. Mojang's Minecraft Dungeons would be the disney equivalent of baby yoda/Mandalorian. It kinda worked! People liked it! Let's see for how long...

To me this highlights the issue with Minecraft spinoffs. Minecraft was a game created with a vision in mind and core gameplay we all know and love was there from day one: place and destroy blocks. That's all there is to it.
Meanwhile all the spinoffs try to look like Minecraft while completely failing at capturing the core of the game that made it popular. Piglins? Villages? Story? Lore? These things are not what makes Minecraft special.

Not surprised to be honest, as soon as I saw what the game looked like, I was immediately uninterested in playing, and then the reviews came out. This game just seems like a cash grab of a game, it’s trying to leach off of the Minecraft title, and thats it.

  • @GayAnnabeth

this feels like this game was more _Blackbird's_ project, and Mojang could genuinely give less of a shit about it and it really only got the Minecraft branding and shit because that would make more money. Idk, the fact that the Blackbird devs still engage with the community really seems that way to me

i still actively play dungeons. it was really cheap of them to not inform us that 1.17 was the final update until a full year later. they could still make dlc for it if they wanted. i know they said there wouldn't be any more dlc after echoing void, but hey, wouldn't be the first time mojang went back on their word.

This is my #2 GOTY (after Terra Nil). But I readily admit that I'm the member of a _very small_ niche that has craved a "first-person RTS" since the Joan of Arc campaign in _AoE2._
This game was never going to be a financial success that justified the _half decade_ of development, so I'm mainly just grateful that the game exists and that the partnership with Mojang was enough to fund BBI as they produce the game that should be my GOTY for 2024: *_Homeworld 3_*
