    I was quite impressed by the built quality and possibilities. So I got two - and ended up returning them both!
    OK I made one error myself: ordered the black version, which looks great, but ... eh ... is kind of difficult to find in the dark!
    Philips made a more serious error in the software: rotating the dial clockwise does not turn the lights on to say 5% wenn they are off and does not turn the lights of when you turn the dial counterclockwise and the lights are at 5% brightness - the way a normal dimmer would! Sure, you can sacrifice a button or two to achieve this effect, but in contrast to the dimmer switch, a visitor has no clue how to turn the lights on/off. What exotic functions I program under the 4 buttons is for me, but intuitively turning lights on/off is a major function of any lights switch! This seems purely a software issue to me. In addition: I'd like to get combo's: button1+dial sets the warmth of the light button2+dial only dims a certain group in the room etc.

    I think you may have answered a similar question to this already but here goes my take on the tap dial switch. Can I configure the switch for the following set up. Button 1, turn on 2 separate lights in the living room. Button 2, turn on overhead ceiling light only. Button 3, turn on free standing lamp only. Also if that's possible, will the rotating dimmer just control the active light or does it activate all the programmed lights and dim or brighten them all? I hope you can understand what I'm getting at here. I already have a Hue dimmer switch but I can't control the lights separately. I understand there is an app to modify the dimmer switch to control separate lights but that's available on iOS only so that leaves the tap dial switch as the only option. Cheers.

      Yes to all of that… but the dimmer part will only dim what lights you’ve told it to.. so you could set it to dim a ROOM, and it will dim all the lights that are switched on in that room

    I'm very interested in rotary dials as switches and have the Flic Twist on preorder. I have only just found out that this Hue Dial came out a couple of months ago; I wasn't aware of it's development. Without yet trying either hands on, I think the Flic Twist will have the advantage of both twisting to dim/brighten as well as twisting to scroll through colour temperatures (by 'hold (button) and twisting). That said the Hue Dial could be software updated to include 'hold-twist' functionality to scroll through more colour temperature

    • @steffenfrost995
      @steffenfrost995 2 роки тому

      Perhaps the other advantage to the Flic Twist is that when loose (rather than walk mounted) it will work the same no matter the orientation/ having to look at the unit compared to the Hue Dial with four quadrants to find. Ie Flic Twist could be used in the dark/just by feel. (Does Hue Dial have the button label dots raised or just printed on?) I'm still tempted to buy a Hue Dial to test out hands on and discover anything I didn't anticipate, especially as it is available now!

      Also, I really like that Hue made a black switch! I'd also like Hue remotes and buttons in black as it suits some rooms better, plus helps to distinguish between re.ites if some are white and some are black.
      (I also just learnt i missed the one
      off day on Black Friday I could have ordered black Flic buttons to match car interiors...where I currently have no matching white ones....)

      UPDATE:13 Dec 2022 I've purchased a Hue Tap Dial to try out:
      The 4 buttons can each independently control different lights (either a single Zone OR up to 3 Rooms together- the other rooms/zones grey once you've maxed out at 3 Rooms OR 1 Zone when setting up each button in the Hue App) but when setting up each button you could to select the same Rooms/Zone for some or all of the buttons if you wished, in whatever combination as long as each button doesn't control more the 3 Rooms OR 1 Zone. These buttons work like individual single Hue Smart buttons.
      Then the DIAL can control a only single Room or a single Zone (NOT multiple Rooms like the buttons can). The function of the DIAL is COMPLETELY Independent of the buttons. Think of it as a fifth independent switch. This is just 5 independent switches - 4 buttons and 1 dial - packaged together in a single housing.
      The Dial does NOT brighten/dim the last pressed button or held down button, nor does it scroll through colours.
      My experience is using the Hue App; I wonder if anyone has found more functionality with other apps? (HUE Essentials?)
      I also have Flic Twist on preorder and will compare once I have received.
      If Hue Tap Dial could be software updated to HOLD(button)&TWIST to control the lights related to that button, this would be much more appealing, and I'm guessing would add intuitive diming control over 4 light groups Vs I expect intuitive diming AND colour scrolling in the Flic Twist, but for one light group only via twist for diming and Hold&Twist for colour scrolling. (Flic twist can control more, but I am refering to intuitive control for visitors etc).

      @@steffenfrost995 Hi, wondering if you can help, I've just got one of these. For my hallway / landing which has 3 lights (hallway, stairwell and landing).
      I want the buttons to control each light with the 4th button as a spare (maybe turn the whole house off), when I try and set each button to an individual light I can select them in the "entire home" section (as choosing a room doesn't let you then select an individual light, however they don't work as you would expect, each button doesn't control the individual light. They seem to turn one on, then another button will just cycle a scene on the light already on.
      I've found a way around this by setting up additional zones, 1 for each of the lights and assigning the buttons to these zones and it works as I want but then I just have 3 extra zones which is a bit annoying.
      Not sure if I'm missing something or if this is intended, just wondering if you had any insight?
      I've updated the software to the latest.

    I could tell right away that the idea with this one is clearly the best remote for Hue to date, including all 3rd party ones I've seen, I can't believe it took so long to figure out a dial dimming setup, it should've been their first design, dimming is the only thing you really need, the rest is just toys basically. I dislike having to press-and-hold buttons, because it's a hidden function that no one will just guess, plus it forces you to wait for the equipment to respond which is just not good UX, the dial fixes this. I would dedicate the fourth button to "Off", but I wish that button was already hard-dedicated to it with an "Off" graphic. Someone will disagree and prefer 4 different scene buttons, but no guest will ever know how to turn that off just by looking at it.
    I also wish that there was a way to fix the dial to the wall plate so it can't be removed easily (I use strong double-sided tape to fix them now), being able to move it around is nice but if it's supposed to be the main switch of a room, in needs to stay there permanently, I'd rather have two switches in a room if I wanted a movable one. The last thing is what you mentioned in the video, Philips should offer a range of cover boxes for existing switches, I found one online which works with the default remote, but this is a new form factor, so I have to wait for 3rd parties to design it.
    So close to perfect! But I'll be trying this one one for sure, and hope for some nice updates in the future.

    • @JasperHovenga
      @JasperHovenga 2 роки тому

      "the rest is just toys basically" No its not. Ive installed just one Tap Dial Switch on the first floor to control the lights of different rooms. For example: on button 1 i have the hallway lights, button 2 the nearby bathroom lights, button 3 the hallway and second floor. So its way more then just a dimmer.

    • @Tarets
      @Tarets 2 роки тому

      @@JasperHovenga But then the dial seems useless. At least for me - I can't think of the reason you'd want to change the brightness of a room from outside of it.

    • @lgab
      @lgab Рік тому +1

      @@JasperHovenga Of course it's more than a dimmer, I just meant that any functionality beyond dimming isn't strictly necessary. The four buttons inside the dimmer wheel is a nice trade-off, whereas the regular Hue remote is way too convoluted, you can't expect anyone else to know how to operate the lights just by looking at it, multiple presses and longhold is bad UX in general.

      Until this is updated to hold a button while twisting to dim whatever that button selects, this disappoints as hue do not explain concisely upfront the limited functionality compared to what your intuition would assume. Has anyone tried configuring this in another app (like Hue essentials) to see if this can be configured more powerfully there? (I've deleted hue essentials as my system seems to perform better with one app only). Waiting on Flic Twist to compare, but hoping the Hue Dial can be software updated as it would be a fairly powerful product if the dial could control each 'button'.

    Okay so I'm pretty sure you can completely remove a wall switch leaving back box, use the hue wall modulator to keep the power to hue bulbs constantly live, then this screws directly over back box... amen, looks like a normall switch and doesn't stick out too far off the wall? Not fully looked into the modulators but assumed that's what it does.. pretty sure the normal plate of this screw positioning fits onto uk back box. I know v2 other switch was made larger from v1 for this reason so assuming the dual switch also fits.

      UPDATE: I read an article that states{Philips Hue halts Lightguide bulb sales due to ‘aesthetic’ defect...} it seems that the release postponed until further notice.

    Im very disappointed, because you cant change scene forward or backward. Its just let you change current scene if you click many times in short period of time. If you want to go 1 scene further you need to press button x times, cuz it go to the beginning

    Seems like a backward step, or possibly Philips just looking at ways to bring in additional income. The whole point of the hue system was that it was controlled using an app and smart devices, but here we see them introducing hardware taking us away from smart devices and back to hard switches etc. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me to be honest. Good review on set up though.

      I disagree slightly, I don’t always want to pick up my phone or shout at a smart device to make me lights do something. It’s always good to have more choice in my opinion! 👍🏼

      The one thing Tesla owners always asked for was more physical buttons

      As someone who tried to do everything with voice and app controls, trust me this is way better. Automations and switches are the smartest way to control a smart home, especially if you do not live alone. The accessories HAVE to be controllable by everyone that lives in a space, and this is the best solution: you get to keep your scenes, colors, automations, etc., while whoever else is there (including yourself) has access to easily control the lights without having to pull your phone out of your pocket or shouting clumsy voice commands.
