Then, we catch up with Doug Barlow, one of SBIs young and up-and-coming carpenters, for a look inside his toolbelt.
Our final stop is the Modern Farmhouse project, where Doug helps Lead Carpenter Kevin Barker install traditional nickel gap interiors for streamlined look.

I’m going to be installing nickel gap in my family room and was trying to figure out how to do the inside corners without creating a shit-show. Brilliant idea using the rabbet.

I prefer cutting the last piece into the corner with a 3° back bevel, plus using a 23 gauge nailer to stitch outside corners eliminates a lot of nail holes for painters...

2:36 naturally resistant to moisture and rot
Our log cabin home was built 1973-74. 46 years of cedar shakes (not shingles) on our roof and they have naturally failed to checking and wind damage. We should have use 18-ga. corrugated aluminum roofing that was used on the original woodshed, chicken coop, and garage when my parents moved here in 1958.
That is exactly the life expectancy of shakes on roof applications. True ,metal would still be good as it is generally good for at least 100 years.
How did you finish where the shiplap ends at door rough opening
Alright Mr. Doug “Extra Reach” Barlow, what is the case you use for your bits? I love that idea and the case looks rock solid.
Almost looks like the cases I seen at Kohl's back in the Christmas section they have knives and other tools in little plastic cases identical to that..
I'm curious - if your walls aren't true such that the corners aren't straight (remodel), and your end cut and rabbit both need to be at an angle, will this jig work?
Fix your walls before installing. You can knock out some drywall on inside corners and you can just go slightly over on outside corners to keep them straight.

The painters filled them - most likely Elmers wood fill.
Quality work. The rabbet is a nice touch but I think in the case of shrinkage there'd be a shadow gap regardless.

How do you figure out the depth to set the rabbit?
I wish more Americans would slow down and do good work like this. Americans overall are over the top in a hurry all the time for no reason. If people would slow down and apply what these guys do this country would be a better place to be apart of. I have done hard core construction my whole life and it's been a struggle to convince builders to slow down. Most of the commercial builders that build theses stadiums and larger buildings blow through it and they start falling apart in a short amount of time. I know money and greed is the genesis of these issues. Also, egomaniacal supervisors/leaders who don't want to listen to some of the most talented people usually in a subordinate position.
Anyone watching this who is a greenhorn take notes, slowdown get it down then you can wear the crown. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

Any problem with nailing nickel gap on an accent wall over an existing painted wall...?
Nope. Do yourself a favor and nail through the tongue, not the face of the board. It will look a million times better and save you a ton of work.

OMG! I just got my house back and have to replace my cedar shingle roof only after 31 years!!! They are falling off, rotted and holding water. It looks like they did not put them on the way you guys did. On Tuesday they are delivering tin 😢 instead. Too expensive to replace with cedar $100,00 vs $40,00 so sad it going to change the look of the house completely 🤬
Try blind nailing the nickel gap save your self a lot of finish work
I feel there is a reason he was face nailing but... I see your point lol
I figured it out, cant hide the nail holes on the "blind" shot because the nickle, gap, revals your shots in the gap, cant caulk or putty in there, I can see face nail at heights you can see in the gap, but blind nails where its out of view to save the painters some work

He's wrong when he says clear white cedar shingles aren't clear. Clear 'A' shingles are actually clear. What he's using are B grade or 'sidewall' white cedar shingles. 1 1/2" overlap is enough as the smallest shingle in a bundle is 3 1/2 ". He's also wrong that the red cedar shingles have a thicker butt because they are used for roofing. All 18" red cedar shingles have a thicker butt and can be used on walls and roofs, same with yellow Alaskan cedar shingles.
