Nobody: Sandy: your all gonna die except for texas because I love Texas. And Louisiana will be spared. Them: eyay. Everyone else: ahhhhhhhhhhh ded until 2013
Katrina and Andrew are very well known and they were more powerful and devastating than Sandy. Even more recently Harvey is also well known for being the first storm to surpass Katrina for being the costliest storm.
It was the damage in New Jersey. I live on the coast line in Connecticut and we didn't get much from it even though it was right there before it made that sharp west turn into New Jersey.
Shocking only a catagory 1 storm did so much damage while cities by the gulf of Mexico get hit by 3s and sometimes even 4s and seem to end up better off then New York or New Jersey did with Sandy.
It’s mainly geography and the nature of Sandy. Sandy wasn’t an intense hurricane wind wise by over such a vast swath of the region with Cat 1 winds, pushing water for hours on end, doing that hundreds of miles across, plus Sandy had a Cat 4 equivalent pressure, it was so much energy being forced into the NY bite, you sad historic costal flooding. Plus Sandy transitioned into an extratropical cyclone as it made landfall smashing into an arctic front and nor’easter which brought record snowfall inland. Sandy was a unique storm that you can’t really copy and paste anywhere else. It also shows that wind is not everything. Plus Sandy once again proved that pressure, not wind speed, is a better indicator of a storms destructive nature. Also what’s interesting is when you grow a storm while keeping its pressure the same, the winds would slow down but he spread out. Honestly having 70-90 mph sustained winds across an area of over 200 miles and TS force winds extending over 500+ miles is probably worse than 150+ mph winds extending only 10 or 20 miles. It’s more of an area seeing some what intense winds but also a huge swath of coastline seeing storm surge up to 5-15 feet. As of 2022, 10 years later, Sandy is the fourth costliest US hurricane behind Katrina, Harvey, and Maria and a bit ahead of Ida, Ian, and Irma. Sandy caused 81.9 billion in damage if the storm occurred today based off inflation overtime. Truly a terrible storm. And this wasn’t the big one. Imagine if Sandy was as powerful as the 1938 storm or 1821 storm. And with a warming climate, that is increasingly likely.
Such areas arent prepared to deal with storms like these. Not only was Sandy MASSIVE, but the area it hit rarely EVER gets hurricanes. Also, TS winds made it to Wisconsin!
I never knew Sandy’s windfield was that big. When it moved inland you can still feel tropical storm force winds all the way in Chicago! Must be a storm to remember because I was young when happened.
Caleb Gamings Gacha yes, hurricane sandy collided into a nor’eatser, which made it DRAMATICALLY Increase in size. Kennoy Brown yes, sandy collided with a nor’easter making it dramatically increase in size, so big it can to to the northern tip of maine all the way down to the southern tip of florida. And not only heavy rain and floods that can go feet high, also in some p,aces they got heavy snow considering sandy morphed with a nor’easter, becoming a “Superstorm”
Julian Perez that is why dont underestimate storms by category, as sandy merged with a nor’easter making it so big it could go from maine to florida. And almost had 15 feet storm surge.
And if we are talking about strength, then super typhoon haiyan (yolando) was stronger, bringing more then 20 feet of rain in only a few minutes. Compare that to katrina, it took a few houre for 14 feet to roll in. And haiyan only took minutes. With millions in the phillipines dead or missing.
Don't know if you guys have done it, an interesting track would be Hurricane Faith (1966) The extra tropical phase might be longer than the tropical....
