Hello mam I am a PG student from India and doing it in Pomology subject. My thesis is on strawberry variety screening but it went totally wrong and a disaster. I planted them in Lucknow city on the 8th of October 2023 on flat beds( approx 300 runners) but after almost 40 days they all died. Why mam ? I did all I could during my trial but I couldn't succeed while my other batchmate succeeded in the trial on strawberry . Their piece of land was approx 100 m away from my land . What went wrong with my strawberry ? Mam my batchmates planted strawberries in the month of early November. So was that a factor for their success? Mam but one student planted it in November still his crop did not succeed . Mam please give basic tips about strawberry farming in sub tropical conditions

Great job! This is the best strawberry set up tutorial I’ve seen yet. I ordered the strawberries from Stark Brothers today. Now all I have to do is follow your list of steps. Thank you
I second that! Can you do a vid on how to make your flower beds? I’m going to make another comment just in case because I reallllly want to see how you guys make the beds 😁😁😁

You're way under-subscribed. This is an excellent explainer. Very thorough for beginners without being too slow or dumbed down. I've been growing strawberries for years and never knew about trimming the roots. I'd like to get those fun white ones this year, so I'll try it out then. Thanks!
I ordered from Raintree also, it was the only provider that had the shuksan strawberries. Texas is different than Washington but I just want to try them, they are suppose to be the sweetest. Heading into my 2nd year of vegetable garden. Thank you!
LOL! I enjoyed your video. Very informative and entertaining. Good hole digging technique...that 5 second segment was priceless. I’m trying strawberries for the first time this year. Give us an update video please.
That's GANGSTA hole diggin to you! 😜I think if you go to my winterizing video, the strawberry bed makes an appearance, since I added compost right before it snowed. I might do another tour video this year. Stay tuned!
OMG I just watched one of her videos. YOU'RE RIGHT!! LOL We could be sisters! Although I can tell you nail polish and gardening do no mix in any way, haha!
I prune them to keep them in my beds, otherwise they send runners all over the place, hanging out of the beds! I don't prune the runners inside the beds, though.
Please add "checking soil PH" or fixing soil PH, testing soil PH and changing it, something similar to your title so it shows up for all of us when we do a search on youtube, will bring more viewers to you :) LOVE your videos!
Thankyou for the info. I just planted Ozark Beauties and we have quite a few squirrels here. I heard you mention making a video on how to keep them out, but couldn’t find it. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi! I'm planting strawberries right now, I'm using cow fertilizer or cow manure, and I'm using a 3-1 ratio of planting soil to cow manure, I've gotten that tip from a worker on a garden-store. But i wonder, when do I water my plants? Every day? Every weekend? I'm using straw as cover on the soil by the way, just if that changes the moisture
Yes, straw should help keep the moisture in the soil, which is GOOD! And also keep the weeds down too. Water when the soil is dry. If you want an excuse to buy a cute little garden gauge (I mean, like, who doesn't??), you can put one in your yard. I empty mine once a week on Mondays and make sure the garden gets 1" of rain of week and if not, I pull out the hose.
This is the best gardening video I’ve seen so far! I love how you take us step-by-step. I have one question though. Why did you double the recommended amount of fertilizer? Was it because the fertilizer grade was roughly half of 10-10-10? I’m planning on getting the organic garden tone fertilizer and I can’t find the grade on there. Should I still double it? Thanks!!
Hi Autumn, sorry just rereading your comment and wanted to respond again so I didn't confuse you! I looked up Espoma's Garden-Tone. It's 3-4-4, so yes, I'd used double that to get close to the 10-10-10, maybe a little more.
Great video! Not sure what zone you’re in... I’m in zone 5. Going to try & plant some in my raised bed soon. Do you think they’ll produce strawberries the first year?
They should do fine in zone 5! If there's any varieties that are more cold hardy, try to choose those, since 5 is the lowest zone strawberries are good in. I didn't get too much the first year, but they are going like gangbusters right now! 🍓🍓
I use a labelmaker actually. I was actually surprised that it didn't fade! I've had some out there for two years now. It's crazy. There's a link to both the markers and labelmaker in my description. Enjoy!
I do have a brief section in my winterizing video with the strawberries. I might do a strawberry protection video this year or another tour video so they might pop up there. I'm sure I'll post my PILES of strawberries on IG, too, if you're over there. That's my brag spot for my harvests. ;-)

Great, informative video! Thank you!! My strawberries are in a 2' high x 4' x 13' raised bed that we built last year & we used the hugelkultur method to save on the cost of soil. QUESTION: Now that the strawberries are in the bed, and the soil has broken down about 2", how do you add enough soil/compost to bring it back up 2" without disturbing the roots? I'm thinking I shouldn't have planted them in as deep a bed, in the first place. 😟 Do you think I should build a 1' high bed to put them in, and not use the hugelkultur method in it? The soil will still breakdown, though, and the plants will still get lower in the bed, right?
Hey Susan! I'm not versed in the hugelkultur method, though I know the premise. I'm not sure how hugelkulturists (is that a word?? LOL) deal with the height issues. I've successfully laid mulch on top of strawberries in the fall and the strawberries do poke up back through in the spring. You could add some height that way. Don't add too much though because you don't want to smother them. I think if I were going to do hugelkultur I might use it more for annual beds where it was easier to top off the soil after I harvested a crop (which everyone has to do anyways regardless of whether it's regular soil or hugelkultur). Keep experimenting! That's the best way to figure it all out! ♥️
Thank you for all the information. Very helpful. Seeing that you live in New York state, do the strawberries fare well over the winter months for the next growing season? Do you mulch them over in the fall when the ground freezes?
Hi Susan, I'm definitely in the warmer area (Long Island) of New York (zone 7), but you can do them in zones 5-8. I don't do too much to them over the winter, but for my winterizing video I did top dress them with compost. They are very happy right now. I'm harvesting strawberries daily!
As little as I can get away with, LOL. My area gets pretty good rainfall most years. I have a rain gauge in my yard I empty every Monday. If things are consistently below 1" a week, then I start hand watering with a hose.
Do I have to remove the grass if I plan on using a raised bed? Or can I put it on top of the grass then maybe put black plastic on top of the grass? Or is that unnecessary?
Definitely don't use black plastic! It will break apart into little pieces and you'll never be able to get it out of your soil. Ask me how I know this! 😬 Also, you want to allow water and worms to get in and out of your beds and it won't be able to do that with plastic at the bottom. For my shorter beds, a long time ago, I put cardboard on the bottom of the beds before to block the grass. That worked. For these beds, I ended up removing the grass in order to level them properly. But then I threw the removed sod back into the bottom and covered it with tons of soil. No issues with the grass re-growing. Weeds are always going to get into your beds. No way around it. The only way to prevent weeds is to weed regularly. If your beds are level, I wouldn't worry about removing the grass. Just fill 'em up. The grass with naturally die underneath.
Hi Bob, I made the beds out of cedar from the local Home Depot. I'll have a video coming out soon on how I made them since I had to make two more. Stay tuned!
I guess I didn't know about TriStar. It looked like no plants were included just roots. I put them in garden and watered. Probably nothing will come up. I should have just paid more for the already established plants for sale!
That's how "bareroot" plants come! They look pretty pathetic, for sure. First time I got bareroot anything I thought it was dead and thought the same thing. 🤣 Keep watering and they'll grow!
My main pests for strawberries are definitely the squirrels. The birds have discovered my blueberry bushes and currants, which I think distracts them. :-) And I have been super lucky with the slugs (cross my fingers!)
Is it possible to add lime after your strawberries are planted? Also, I guess I missed it, but how wet should the soil stay/often should one water the strawberries once planted?
Not sure about the lime. For the watering, I just use a rain gauge I have in my yard and start hand watering if I start getting less than 1" of rain per week. If you live in a dryer area, you might want to try an automatic soaker hose system though, since hand watering that often might be a lot of work.
Can you use straw instead of mulch? Also, can you tell me how many rows you were able to plant in your 14x3 area? It looks like 3 rows? And in each row the plants are 12 inches apart?
Yep, straw works! Whatever mulch material you have on hand. I live in the northeast with lots of trees, so I always have piles of leaves around. In raised beds you can plant them 12" apart, so 14 plants per row (since my beds are 14' long) x 3 rows (since my beds are 3' wide) = 42 plants. They fill in pretty quickly so don't be disappointed at how pathetic they look when you first plant them! Gardening is an exercise in patience, LOL!
@@ReSprout thank you. This will be my first year ever growing anything. Going to start with potatoes and strawberries. If I can handle those then I’ll branch out to tomatoes, etc.
Potatoes are very easy to start with, though you'll probably be biting your finger nails like I did the first time I grew them. I was DYING to know if they were done or how they were doing. Good luck!
Starting with good soil and good fertility is always a good idea! If the bed has been recently fertilized or amended, I skip it, but I think that bed hadn't had some love in awhile. Here's some more info from University of Maine on fertilizing for strawberries: extension.umaine.edu/publications/2067e/
Yeah, I really think one of the main reasons a lot of people don't like vegetables is that they eat the stuff from the grocery store. That's their only experience. But once you have a REAL tomato, how can you not want to eat juicy tomato sandwiches all summer???!
My strawberries are attacked merciously by slugs, pillbugs, and mocking birds. No fun. Definitely not a beginner crop for me. Im an avid gardener and two years trying in raised beds and then containers to no avail.
That sucks! Hardware cloth definitely helps for the birds. I don't wrestly too much with slugs and pillbugs. Would love to hear from some other Garden Bosses!

Yeah, I really think one of the main reasons a lot of people don't like vegetables is that they eat the stuff from the grocery store. That's their only experience. But once you have a REAL tomato, how can you not want to eat juicy tomato sandwiches all summer???!
@@ReSprout I agree with you 200%

Thank you Beard CigarBeer!
do raised beds have a bottom???? okay they do. I just hope strawberries can now grow in places that are not cold.
They can, but mine don't! I found that bottoms just inhibit drainage and good soil microbes and worms from coming into the beds.
Thanks
Had to upvote at gangsta XD
My hubby says I'm only like 10% ACTUALLY funny all the times I think I *AM* funny. That's ok. I like amusing myself. 🤣

🤣🤣🤣
Good way to help keep squirrels at bay is to have an outside CAT.
A HUNGRY cat....
LOL! I have long wanted to get an outside cat for my rat and compost bin problem too... 🤔
