Abida parveen is a sufi singer. Sufi music transcends all. Did you know all modern copied and deviates from sufi music and sadly making sufi music into something more darker and sinister. Let me give u an analogy. Its like a demon devil taking the light from an angel and corrupting it for bad purposes. That's why some western music will make people go mad and bad. But sufi music will uplift u. And try to get ur spirits high.

Thank you so much for this reaction - it was wonderful to see - I really loved your passion and analysis.
I was born in Pakistan, but have lived in the UK for 61 years, so am a hybrid of east and west. Also I have worked as both a professional western and eastern musician, so would like to share my perspective.
Chaap Tilak literally refers to things used to adorn the forehead area - i.e. represent your beauty - you,
a literal translation would be something like:
"you have taken away my looks and identity by joining your eyes with my eyes"
    which after cultural translation becomes:
"I have lost myself in you with just once glance of your enchanting eyes"
The writer is Amir Khusro (born 1253 AD) who is an iconic figure in the cultural history of the Indian subcontinent.
Amir Khusro was a sufi mystic, and sufi's see God as all things and all existence and as being a source of pure unconditional love, rather than a God to be feared.
Sufi's typically represent these concepts in coded language, represented as romantic love between a lover and beloved
The song is saying that you can't get close to God by acting out devotional rituals - the only way to be truly close to God is to experience God - and only through spiritual teachers can you be shown how to achieve that state - in the song it mentions both the writer (Amir Khusro) and his spiritual teacher (Nizamuddin Auliya) in exactly such a relationship.
It also talks about the game of love (between the lover - you, and the beloved - God) and how in that game you can't lose, because - God is eternal and will be with you whether you win (get a response) or lose (don't get a response).

Wonderfull reaction and thank you for that!! From my point of view this song transcends religion, just as Sufism kinda transcend religion or belief. It's about mysticism and the reunion with source, God, Allah, Christ or Brahman. It points towards the One ultimate reality which in fact we all are.
We are human beings but besides that we are personalities. And we can't be two right? So one of them has to be false and the reason for this has to do with identification, belief etc.
We are divine beings and divinity is our true nature, unfortunatly we identify ourselves with the objective experience, meaning we identify ourselves with our body, thoughts, emotions etc while in fact our origin has nothing to do with that. when a person for example surrenders himself there is the oppurtunity for source to fill this place, in other words the person becomes enlightened, divine etc. (while actually we all are that already deep down) When a persons drops his ego or the persona reality is able to show itself as it isnt't able to do this on the level of mind. so the ego (the false belief in feeling a seperate entity) has to surrender to reveal the ultimate oneness of existence.

    • @innocenzz
      @innocenzz Рік тому +5

When God, Brahman, Allah, Source, consciousness or whatever you want to call it wants to experience his own creation it has to dive into it's creation. But when he does this when he remembers his own divinity the experience wouldn't be as real. Just as our dreams the dream loses it's power as soon as we understand it is a dream, in this world therefore source has created "Avidya" or ignorance or forgetfullness to become fully emersed in this experience. But when a character in the play of life or persona surrenders itself there is the possibilty for source to reunite with itSelf basicly, when this happens it isn't the person that gets enlightend but it is actually source or God that has woken up out of maya.

    To briefly add:
On one level, this is a love song - on a temporal plane.
The spiritual meaning is that it is between the worshiper and the Beloved (who is Allah)
The worshiper is the lover, who wins in the 'game of Love' regardless of the outcome:
The lover gains regardless of response, because he/she submits.
Because the only truth in Love is Submission.

Anyone who associates Sufism with a particular religion doesn't get the picture. This was written by Amir Khusrau more than 700 years ago when Hindus and Muslims weren't so divided and has since been revered by people from all religions. Sufism transcends religion and praises the one nameless divine who is often addressed master or lover. It does not take any other form.

The language of this song is called "Brij Bhasha". Its an eastern Hindi dialect from the city of Mathura - a religious Hindi site devoted to Lord Krishna. Brij is also another name for Krishna. A lot of Hindu devotional songs are in this language. Now Mathura happens to be in the state of Uttar Pradesh, which has the largest Muslim population in India and over the centuries many converted to Islam under Muslim / Mughal rule. Various sites in the State were an offshoot of the Delhi sultanate for its proximity - for eg Agre. So, the devotional poetry that was done for Hinduism in this language was then also done for Islam. Now "chaap" here is the black mark that Muslim men have on their forehead as a sign of devotion, and "Tilak" is the red mark Hindus apply for the same reason. This is a Sufi song - which means - the writer is talking about the higher supreme power essentially, not necessarily Allah or the Hindu gods. He's talking about giving up the identify one has as a Hindu or Muslim, once they embrace the higher supreme spiritual power in the universe. This is a beautiful amalgamation of original Indian culture and ways of devotion, with that of Islam using certain references. This song is centuries old and written in Delhi.

"Chaap (mark on muslims' head), tilak (mark on hindus' head)... i lost my identity when i met my beloved god, " like a water droplet, river, etc. looses its identity when it meets the ocean.. in some south asian cultures enlightenment is often expressed as us being the female lover and god being the groom. The excitement and submissiveness of a saint is like that of a bride and enlightenemnt is like the first night togather. Eventually we shall all try to be good wives and prepare ourselves to be his worthy bride and hope he comes to marry is. This song is a celebration of khusro's "first night" or "marriage with God"
Another example of selfless love is like a loyal dog always waiting to get just a glimpse of Master no matter how it is treated

    Cheenli = Snatched
    PS: Literally speaking.
My "interpretation" in this context is "Identity", as in losing ones "Identity" as in oneself.

Chap and tilak are visial identification markers of ones religion. Tilak is hindu forhead adorment (tika) usually red color whereas chap is black mark appear on forehead of person (Moslty Muslim) due to putting forehead on hard floor in Sajda in prayer (namaz) . So they become identification mark of ones Religion at that time. So khusru used chap tilak as a metaphor that God has stripped khusrus identity by looking at him.

I was very touched by how much this song moved you. Another example of what music is able to achieve.💛💛
But, oh man, a lot to unrevel here. First of all: I liked the music very much. But I was about to write about the singing as being too much of vocal acrobatics to my liking until I listened to your explanation of the origin of this singing style. I can appreciate it a lot better now - still, it's hard to get accustomend to for me.
I will not get into your comments about faith, not being a person of faith myself as I stated before. But I will adress devotion per se. Devotion, total devotion in particular, can also be a path to very unhealthy things. There's a fine line between devotion and losing yourself. That goes for faith and relationships. If you're in too deep the danger of losing yourself in it and give up what defines you as a person or as an individual is very high. And the way out of it is more often than not rocky, to say the least.
In general terms I agree to your statement that you should always gain knowledge on your own account and not limit yourself to the words of any kind of so called leaders. It's imperative to use your own mind and common sense to filter what's coming from them and engage in a little research to back that up or discard it. The key always is knowledge and not blind trrust.
    ☮🖖💛💛💛

@rosaliereacts allow me to explain the meaning of the title of this poem. Let’s understand the meaning of each word first.
Chaap - literally means mark, a mark left on forehead of muslims who pray regularly, skin on forehead wears out leaving a mark, a chaap.
Tilak - is the mark put on forehead by Hindus who are religious.
    Sab cheeni - took away
Mose naina mila ke - meaning after we gazed at each other or after you saw me or i saw you.
When the poet says, chaap tilak sab chheeni re mosey naina mila ke, it means, you took away my faith in god when I looked into your eyes. I lost my devotion to god after I looked into your eyes. The poet compares his loved one to the higher being than his faith. the love is so strong and pure that there is no need for them to pray to god or believe in god if they simply love each other.
At least that’s my interpretation of this line. Feel free to disagree.

So, my 2 cents about what Khusro intends "Chaap tilak" to signify is not just the literal translation as in the Hindu tilak or Muslim mark but rather your pretense, your style, or whatever you feel you represent and what represents you, real or imagined, all of that is stripped away and you are left at the mercy of that divine gaze.

Rosalina. Your reaction is spot on and you have won me over as a fan.
What you are talking about is the concepts of Ishqe Haqeeqi and Ishqe Majaazi literally TRUE LOVE and FALSE LOVE. Loosely to translated as Love of Allah and Love of his creatures. It is a concept inherent to Sufism that the pathway to achieving greater levels in Love of Allah is by loving His creation i.e. humans. Because Allah is everywhere. He is all around us. Haq Allah. Allah Hu. That is why in sufi poetry, the love for Allah is described in similar words to love for a woman. There are alot of cultural nuances pertaining to sufi poetry that are usually misread by out-of-subcontinent people. But so far your analysis is closer to the heart than others I have seen so far.

This song is (from my humble opinion) not about religion, it trancends religion. This song has to be placed in it's context and in this case it's Sufism, Sufism is the mystical branch or tradition within Islam. Mysticism trancends belief and is about a real experience of the Divine rather then a belief, it's about losing the idea of being a "person" simply by direct experience.
In a mystical/enlightenment or nondual experience one loses his idea of being a person or even being a body, one realises then his true (divine) nature which trancends the person (or the belief in being a separate individual). One realise he is equal to the Divine and from that realisation (which some traditions call "Self realization) many of the suffering of being a person gets dissolved.
The suffering a "person" endures is ultimately a path to bring one home so to say, or that a person will shift it's focus towards the outer world to the inner world in which one can realize his true nature. Even in the old Christian mystical traditions this is known for example by the phrase "Know Thyself". In Hinduism Advaita Vedanta is such a tradition similar to Sufism, Buddhism is mainly about this topic and in other eastern religions the same message (from direct experience) are being shared like Taoism. The song speaks about devotion and devotion to ur spiritual master or Guru, But that master doesn't have to be a person, a Guru in the outer world. The ultimate master is one's Higher Self, the only Self, pure consciousness or God we have given it many names. A traditional Guru if he's genuine will teach you that he's equal to you (that description isn't accurate, in fact we are all one, and a genuine Maula (or teacher) will point you towards the oneness of existence). Also Jesus taught this for example by stating "me and the father are one" and many other references towards this in the Bible. The only problem is that "Truth" can't be understood by the mind and therefore is hard to teach, a master, a guru, a sage or whatever has to use words to point to something that cannot be put in words, therefor mysticism is hard to grasp as the mind isn't able to grasp it. When it "thinks" it understands it is mostly a play of the Ego or Mind.
To make a long story even longer this song is about losing the individuality and the sense of being just a person, and followed by a direct understanding of our true nature.

Chaap means your "brand" or identity. Tilak is your declared allegiance to a system, philosophy or ideal. The song says that just by looking at me, you left me bereft of my identity and loyalties since that made me one with you. So i am formless and egoless. True bliss and nothing else. The poet goes on to say that he achieved this by betting everything he had. Two outcomes of the bet -he outright "owns" his beloved - the supreme being or he loses everything to his love. Either way he wins.
Any other religious interpretation is crap.
