I'd likely make the frame out of aluminum channel, mounted with a piano hinge and a couple of simple latches. Something very easy to clean after your jobs, but enough to keep the debris out of the AC Core.

Got a solution for ya. Modify your to guard. Under the top guard, go get a pair of puller fans from Auto Zone, like the ones you would use for a radiator setup on a truck for a transmission cooler. Mount those up there to assist your pusher fans. Next I would head over to Home Depot and get a couple of reusable AC Filters, the ones that look like green scotch bright pad. Build a small "filter" holder something easily removable so you can clean the filter. The extra fans will give the boost you need to keep the AC working.
