I did this with an Ikea Kallax and 16 consoles. I found the way you did your cable slack wrapping to be cumbersome and defeating my purpose of making the shelves mobile, so I used 4 pegs to wrap the cable around evenly and keep the cable more secured. I also used a label printer to label the cables instead of color marking. I didn't really think anyone would be interested, but you've inspired me to make a video. I will also never use an LCD, so it's hooked up to 2 CRTs through an Extron matrix switcher.
This video actually helped me a lot with a custom entertainment center I made years ago with the intention of replacing the old backing that was on it. You helped me make an inexpensive decision that will clean up the look of the setup as well at the cable management and I wanted to take the time to thank you for that as well as the recommendation for spechlers cherry cola. Good drink thanks for that one!
Very cool setup! Where did you get the dividers starting at 16:40 that you use to separate your xbox and SNES and so on? I also have the kallax unit and those dividers are exactly what I'm looking for! Keep up the great work as I'm a big fan of your channel.
@@RoXolid was wondering the same! Are they just called "shelf dividers"? I have this same shelving unit, and I'd love to be able to divide the cubes to put my minis under neath the main consoles.
This was an absolutely stellar video, Gary. I've got a ton of ideas now to do work on my own setup which is its own hot mess of wires. Thanks for the inspiration!
Again I am so sorry for you loss. I have a suggestion, use black sharpie along the edge of the pegboard to conceal the edges more. I hope you left room for testing inputs. (HDMI, Scart, S-vidoe, Composite and Component) I plan on making my one cube system once Plywood is not overpriced. Great minds think alike, I already have my pegboard.
I love the concept. I do have a question on two: what are those things you use to place one console over another? Also, have you run into a problem with heat? I noticed that the fans on some consoles are obstructed.
I love videos like this. I have 12+ consoles. My biggest inquiry is about large power strips/surge protectors. I never know what's good as you can't trust Amazon and most ppl don't have this many systems and can't test them easily. I currently have a component selector + ossc, want gcompsw (auto-switcher) + retrotink 5x to make it even simpler.
hey, i have this many consoles, and i needed a good surge protector, i strongly recommend the AXTRA brand surge protectors. Mine have survived many power surges and usage across game consoles and equipment i use to work on consoles.
If you like cherry colas, when you are in SC for SEGE next weekend, be sure to hunt down a "Cheerwine". I don't think you can buy it outside of the Carolinas. It's a local cherry cola and the best I've ever had. It makes an amazing float with vanilla ice cream in it as well. Anyway, I'll be headed down from NC to SEGE. Looking forward to getting to meet you.
Great job! I have a rat’s nest of wire behind my tv stand in the living room, and you’ve given me some ideas on how to organize everything better. I do have a question for you that’s somewhat related, and it’s about what hdmi switcher do you use personally? I’m looking to buy one that’s higher quality, and has more outputs, than the one I got from Walmart recently.
is it safe to run that outlet strip into the surge protector? I know surge into surge is not advised but extension cord into surge is also not advised from what I read
@@RoXolid I might head to my HF and get one to do the same. I need that plug spacing. This video was a huge help. The peg board is a great idea for organization! I use an Ikea Besta TV unit for my consoles which has a back but the wires are a mess. I just went to get some pegboard to put on the back. Also ordered some M8 x 1" threaed post casters from Amazon that will fit into the screw holes for the existing legs. It's too hard now to get back there to change a wire. Weekend project coming up! You did a good job on the project. I would think you need a little space for your Xbox consoles for heat ventilation. Also, I think you can put your HDMI ports on the Kallax, in Klingon of course, instead of the floor . Good job man! That is a nice project. I have a similar problem here in my house.
for what you waste in time using a 3-5 12 u racks work a treat.. this might work for a kid however if you are someone changing addresses on a semi constant rack mounting is the proper way to go.. even if you are still using scart/s-video/component as a video source you might want to consider av-hdmi switch..
