At 2:22 the narrator states that the finish is too compacted and that is not good. Is this because it has reduced the vapour permeability and/or the thermal performance? or is it not effective as a good enough key for the next coat? I ask because I have applied by hand using a plastering trowel and I have a similar finish and am worried I have reduced the thermal performance.
Hi Iain The main point is that, similar to any insulation material, if it is over compacted this increases density which in turn will likely increase its conductivity slightly. The breathability won't be compromised though.
Diathonite should be finished with Argatherm to provide a smooth or semi-smooth finish. For an ultra-smooth finish, Argacem Ultrafine can be used on top of the Argatherm. Note, use of Argacem Ultrafine would also require a reinforcing mesh to be applied between the first and second layers of the Argatherm.
The wood battens are the same depth as the required thickness of Diathonite. They form a guide for the long straight edge used to level the wall once the area has been fully covered (see 2:49 in the video). Once the required thickness is reached and levelled with the straight edge, the battens will be removed and the gaps filled with more Diathonite. You can use narrower battens if necessary. They just need to be firmly fixed to the wall, the same depth as the required plaster thickness and removable when you are done.

So far as this goes, va bene, ma posso aggiungere una finitura scremata sopra?

Can the wood battens be swapped out for something more insulating?
