One of my favorite Lyric tenors, no matter what Language he sings in period, (his Tragic death early at age 38 in 1942 (Because he was Jewish put in a Swiss internment camp during World Two) he was not yet of course not yet in his prime, we can only wonder now how many more recordings would be made, had he not died (before age 40) , at the end of his life, living in a Swiss interment camp.------- RIP
I also thought, if he can live, I would like to see such a good tenor, how old can he sing?
He was very much an Italian bel canto, he sang for the expression of emotion, not the tenors of today, who are seen as sympathetic to the notes, pursuing only the technique of singing, detached from reality, detached from the historical context of the play. They also sing for the vibrato, and in the final analysis they are all slaves to the notes, which dominate them rather than let the notes serve the expression of feelings.
@@lisaszxu1961 well said, compared to years ago.
I have a rare old original "78' RPM record, a recording" he made of "La Paloma" sung in Spanish, but here the German recording for the German public, who mostly adored him..
Schmidt was very short in height, under five feet tall, but his voice was very six feet tall in quality!
He made many movies in Germany, you can still a few of them on you tube, in some of his many films. RIP. ----- Schmidt. 1904-1942
Sometimes I even feel that just learning his singing technique is enough.
