Sony CAMERA TO PHONE photo TRANSFER - FTP - full size images as you shoot!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 лип 2024
- If you want to send photos to your phone or tablet over wifi, at their full resolution, and either Jpegs or RAW, this is they way you can do it easily. Once it is set up, it will take a matter of seconds to establish a connection from your camera to your phone and send both raw and jpeg photos across, while you keep taking photos.
So if you are frustrated with the Sony imaging edge app, or you want all of the resolution your camera provides sent straight to your phone, this is the way to do it.
I use this all the time now and I can be shooting whilst they are transferring. Then when I get a break, I can upload them to social media, or wherever they need to go…from clients to friends…
And if you’re wondering how "can I send full sized images to my phone?" … or "why is the resolution from the sony imaging edge app so low?" Then this is the way you can easily get all of that goodness from your Sony camera to your phone within seconds.

Just a heads up in case someone has trouble in accessing their FTP server and gets the "Failed to connect to an ftp server" message no matter the setting in the camera or the server. In my a7IV I had this issue from day 1 while trying to connect to win 11 ftp server. I tried all sort of things like FileZilla, IIS hosted ftp etc. All my local network devices worked perfectly fine either as a client or a server. My camera just refused to cooperate until I tried to connect to my phone's hotspot and it worked. That was a pointer to the type of WiFi connection. It turns out that for any other device I knew the band and the WPA protocol but Sony doesn't give any information about what my camera uses. Some trial and error and I ended up changing my WiFi setting from WPA2 Personal + AES to WPA/WPA2 Personal TKIP+AES. For some reason this works only when I am connected using the 2.4Ghz band. If I try the same setting and 5Ghz it still fails, not sure why yet.
In general, when you can't connect to the FTP server, also check your router's WiFi settings before giving up!
Thanks for the heads up with this valuable bit of info, I'll pin this comment so others can see it easily.
Thanks very much and thanks for watching 😁👍
Mike, I just want to add my thanks for you being good enough to share this information. I’ve had a lot of frustration in attempting this myself. This video has now been added to my A9 and A7R4 collections in UA-cam. Thanks again!
Thanks so much Stephen. It was really annoying me as well, so I thought I'd make a video on it as soon as I worked out the easiest way to do it.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Thank you so much for coming up with this video. I have been meaning to work it out ever since it came but had been procrastinating. I really appreciate you putting in so much time and helping us out. Cheers buddy 😊😊😊
No worries, I hope it helps!! Thanks for watching Manu and Baani! 😁👍
awesome video Mike been meaning to set this up on my A7iii for over a year got it sorted thanks. Would never have sussed it out without watching this! 👍🏼
Thank you, Mike. Not only for this video, but also for the one where you teach how to use a flash. I still use it when I forget some things. You're a great teacher :)
Thanks so much for your kind words Vladimir!
It really helps motivate me to keep making videos when I hear they are helping. 😁👍
I’m glad you made this, others have tried to explain but you, as always, make it fairly simple and crystal clear! I got a Sony A7IV and it worked fine 😊👍🇸🇪
That's awesome to hear Andreas! I'm glad I could help!!
Thanks for watching 😁👍
I am glad I came across this tutorial thank you! I saw the function on my a7iii and was blown away that it was offered. And I thought I was going to have to buy a wifi sd card. Money and time saved. Thank you again.
No worries Chris, great to hear I could help. It is a fantastic function isn't it.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
You didnt leave a thing out, needed this. Thanks
Been frustratedly trying to fathom out FTP transfer from my A9 to my iPhone and onwards to the press, for my rugby league shoots - UNTIL NOW!
Thanks Mike 🙏 Very succinct and easy to follow instructions. I will be using the (manual) transfer for this Sunday’s game.
I’ve subscribed to your channel and look forward to watching more of your Sony Alpha videos 👍👍👍
that's great to hear Peter! I hope it works out for you at the rugby league shoots!
Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing😁👍
@@mikesphotography Please help, I have very little money so I can't afford editing software and can't even afford Lightroom mobile subscription, I use both Android and iPhone and I got a Sony RX1R II for my birthday and when I swiped the Raw photos from my camera to my phone and edited the Raw photo on my phone using Google Photos App and converting the finished Raw photo to a JPEG, the maximum resolution is 1616x1080 which is too small, it should be 7952x5304, remember I can't afford Lightroom mobile subscription so I can't use that editor and Lightroom will not recognise these RAW files from my Sony Camera, is their any apps that you know of for my Samsung Galaxy S21 and iPhone 12 Pro that you an think of, thanks
Thanks so much for providing this tutorial. Worked like a charm. This was one of the reasons I was using to justify spending the cash on an Alpha 9ii. This was a tremendous help.
Great to hear I could help Ron!
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Fantastic tutorial Mike. I’m just learning about FTP benefits and setup and your effort is greatly appreciated. Kudos on a great video. 👍👍
No worries Bob, I'm glad I could help and thanks for watching 😁👍

Thank you very much for this detailed tutorial on this FTP feature. It is really useful and appreciated!
No worries, thanks for watching! 😁👍
Just wanted to say a big thank you for this video. Using your instructions I was able to set up a mobile pocket FTP server on an old Google pixel phone. I can keep the phone in my camera bag and all images immediately transfer to it for backup. Cheers!
That's great to hear, I'm glad I could help. 😁👍
You are an absolute angel for doing this video!
Thanks very much! 😁👍
Amazing work man!! You’re the best!!
No worries, thanks for watching Mizo! 😁👍
Wow, Mike! I can tell you put a ton of time and effort into this video. Great job. Stay safe and cool.
Thanks Lance, this one did take a while to do but it is very much a feature I have been using a lot since setting it up.

Worked like a charm.. used my tab s7+. I had to enable raw + jpg shooting 🤣 cuz it only transfered raw files..all solved now! tuanks a lot! game changer!
Great to hear you got it working. It is fantastic isn't it!

Very informative, well done. Thank you!
Thanks Josh! 😁👍
Best video. You solved one of my most urgent sony problems 👌
Thanks very much! 😁👍
Thank you so much for this video!👍I was trying to find a way to transfer jpegs that i shot using my custom picture profiles to my phone and it was impossible with the Sony App. It would always take converted jpegs from the raw files instead of the ones that i shot with the PP. This way not only works perfectly, it's sooo better!
MAN! Thank you! Sooo helpful!
No worries, thanks for watching 😁👍
Excelent Video! Very useful and well explained!! Cheers from Argentina

Really clear explanation, thank you. Exactly what I want to do with my A9ii and an iPad. Now to go set it up!
Thanks so much Giles! Let me know how you get on with it! 😁👍
Did this work for you Sony a7ii?
I can’t find the FTP button in the menu.
Hi Haley,
If there's no FTP option in the menu, the camera doesn't have the technology built-in to do this.
Thanks, greetings from Germany.
Amazing Video! Thank you so much!
And thank you for watching! 😁👍
You the Man Mike!
Thanks very much Joe! 😁👍
Well now I know the latest update to the firmware is worth installing! Awesome tutorial Mike 🤙

@@mikesphotography just a heads up, followed your tutorial and it's worked a treat!!! Thanks so much 🍻🍻

Again a really good video. Gonna try it soon on my iPad.
Thank you again Mike. Well explained.
Of course...thanks for the clarification David. 😁👍
Thanks!!
grazie per aver condiviso queste informazioni, a me ha funzionato tutto al primo colpo. ho usato un iphone come FTP e la fotocamera è una A7C
Thanks for the tutorial. I am using your setup and it is very practical and fast (using 5ghz hotspot). I have found one problem though, that is the IP from the hotspot keeps changing. Are you always changing the IP on camera to match the one from the hotspot or have you found a way to keep static?
Pay attention viewers; pop quiz at end of video😁. Kidding asside, Mike, kudos for tackling this complex subject, rarely covered in YT. My guess is that this is the most technically challenging tutorial you’ve ever done.👍👍👍 This episode has got to be ripe for PetaPixel type coverage.
(Be honest, you pre-planted that photo on your smartphone ahead of time, didn’t you😁.) Wi-fi signal stability a key factor, as you noted; tip - if your smartphone/tablet is set to auto-reconnect to a given WI-FI source (like home router) disabling the auto-connect (at least for cam file attempts) should help the stability.
Feature should be a boon for photojournalists who need quick, in-field pic uploads. Cam makers would be wise to build in smartphone-like features so that something like “e-mail photo(s) now” could be enabled. Cheers!
Haha!!
Thanks dude, it was a fun one to do and I have been meaning to make it for a while...it is a really good feature for anyone really who wants to quickly get their images to their phone.
If I take a shot I like and it looks good on the back of the cam, I'll quickly send it across and I can edit the RAW file right in the lightroom app...then upload to instagram or which even social site I am using. Much quicker than the app.
Good point about the wifi. That would kick out the camera if it was too far away I suppose...🤔
I'm wondering how long it will be before cameras come with a sim port to be able to get photos straight up to social, an FTP or something like that.
👍👍
Thank you after these setup I ve finally ditched the terrible imaging edge app & I can edit Raws on my phone using Lightroom 😊 using my A7SIII. Note I had to disable the power saving mode for the Wifi FTP app on Android to have a more stable connection.
Thanks and greetings from Türkiye
Thanks for watching Ahmet! 😁👍
Thanks to the video! If I’m using my hotspot is this going to use data on my plan? I think I’m topped at 5gb so that would be an issue.
Well done. I think that this makes my A7C less crippled by the single card slot. The single slot isn't a big deal for me, but I know it's a legitimate concern for event photographers.
I also agree that syncing your camera with the phone is great for social sharing.
One big omission seems to ne video. I'd love to have clips synced... at least 1080p 😁
Thanks Gerald! Most definitely...having the images backed up to a device in your pocket really does mitigate the need for a second card slot...
I also did a poll on SD card failures, and out of about 880 people 81% have never had a problem with them.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
@@brrlukhemiyadara782 that's great research thanks. I may be a little naive but I was thinking about the USB C port, and thinking to myself... wouldn't it be nice if I could plug in an ssd and the camera's firmware would allow me to backup file directly to an Ssd. Maybe it could be done real-time for video? I know its weird having an ssd hanging off the side of your camera but its smaller and cheaper than the ninja for us budget amatures
Thanks for this useful video. First instance it was only transfering RAW files instead of the JPG i set on my camera. Duh, that was because I was shooting only in RAW. In order to send jpg you must either shoot in JPG or RAW+JPG. This process doesnt convert RAW to JPG like when using Imaging Edit.
hi thank you it worked ! i was wondering if there is an option to manually transfer each images to phone ?
Hi Mike . Thank you very very helpful video.
After marking, for example, 50 photos with a star on my camera , can I somehow filter them to just transfer these marked photos to the phone at one time or do I have to find and copy each one in turn?
Hi again,
Your video was excellent, fancy a follow up on problems with Static & Dynamic IP addresses.
When you went walkabout with your phone and created a hotspot, did you make any changes to your ftp addresses.
Both myself and others are finding that when setting a hotspot in different locations, the IP address sometimes changes and we can't connect.
I believe you can set a static address to stop this problem but not sure if it causes other problems.
It would be very helpful if you could investigate this and perhaps let us know how you are Configuring the IP addresses, auto or Manual
Thank you so much for the video. does anyone know after the raw file are in the phone how to export them into mac /pc computer afterwards? at the moment I have to open them 1 by 1 in lightroom on phone?
I use an A7r3 and Sony HX60v and Sony RX100 V and Vi, and I just use the auto transfer shot function. Every time I take a shot it transfers that shot directly to my iphone or Samsung note 9. I can choose either a 2mp jpg or full size jpg. The 2mp is faster but not by much.
Thank you for sharing!
But man… Why is so difficult to send raw images to smartphone on these cameras?
Can’t Sony just update the cameras firmware providing the option to send raws like we already have on the ZV-E10?!
Thx for this video, it was really helpful for my a7riii to send the raw files to my p30 pro. So that you now, I DO use Snapseed to edit my raw files on android. You have to convert the .arw files to .dng with the free rawtodng app. 😉
Thanks for the tip. Interesting to know there is an extra step to edit raw files in Snapseed. 👍
Hi thank you for the video - with very clear explanations. I'm trying to set up my A9 with my iphone in the hotspot mode. But the app you've suggested says invalid IP, so I don't have an IP to fill up in the destination settins
Same problem here
so for an iPhone hotspot do I just change my camera access point to my phones hotspot? or do I need to redo the steps and make another server with that app?
Never could get it to work with the A7RIIIa. I wonder if Sony messed up the firmware on it because the A7RIII is past 3.0 and the a model is at 1.0. I don't even have all the FTP functions like you had on the A7III. Just basic info and functionality. Also would kill the app as soon as I tried to transfer anything. Sony is horrible at software. I''ll just have to use a dongle to move photos.
Hi Mike, would appreciate your opinion on my last comment regarding IP hotspot addresses changing when moving locations when you have a moment.
Hello Mike, thanks for the video. I've a problem with my connection to my local hotspot (with my iphone). It's write "Invalid IP Adress" in Browse & File manager... So I can't connect in ftp woth my camera because i don't have ip Adress..
Is there any way to connect the android with a7iv by the home wifi (ftb) ?
como faço para conectar ftp da canon 5 d mk 4 no iPhone ?🙏🏾😱✍🏾
I can’t set the ftp sharing to my hotspot.
Wich username and password should i use ?
It’ telling me invalip ip adress.
I’m on iphone 13
Hi Mike,
At 19.14 you click start server, I cannot find any start server when using Iphone, is this normal or am I missing something, many thanks
Mike, an excellent well presented video as always. Is there a way to be in the field, do a shoot, automatically upload photos once taken to say Google Drive where a remote editor can edit the photos live? Looking for a secure reliable solution with the Sony A7RIVa to be used at live events. Any advice, links or help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks very much!
I haven't had a setup like that, but I think Kym Illman has a setup that does exactly that. From what I remember he goes through it somewhere in this video: ua-cam.com/video/bshmNX_mP2U/v-deo.html&t
I hope that helps.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Using the FTP transfer with the Shuttersnitch app works perfectly for this! It's a paid app, but well worth it if you need the app to automatically upload incoming photos to Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.
Thanks, Mike! But Sony really needs to up their connectivity game 😅
I 100% agree. Connectivity is rubbish on my a7iii
It is a step in the right direction though...hopefully in the A7iv, they will give us a connection type with more juice...
Thanks for watching 😁👍
WOW - I'm going to be trying this out. As a former Instructional Designer you did a fantastic job on this. The segment on sending a specific photo I'm definitely going to use. But, then again you do wonderful work on all your videos because you stick to a single topic (learning goal).
Now, I just wonder what app on android I can keep open and it will automatically load the newest photo added to the directory?
Thanks so much Pete! It is a fantastic function isn't it and once you're used to the workflow, it really does help in getting your images to your phone really quickly.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
@@mikesphotography - An UPDATE - Ah, it's going to help me out a lot with my starry night portrait sessions. I found an android app - F-Stop Gallery, but *no* auto refresh. CORRECTION I have an older version of Android OS, but the author of the program indicates the auto update works on newer versions of OS I like to show the photos to clients during the session, but stopping and removing the camera from the tripod or having them leave the setup and come look at the camera and have to re-pose. Just having them flip over a tablet on the blanket next to them we can discuss refining posing and where to place lighting prop when handling with so much greater ease. Plus, "social distancing." 😁Surprised you didn't name your hotspot "The Pretender" ;-)
Hi Mike, awesome this will really help with my A7C. I have been trying to get it to work with my RAVPOWER hub, but i'm messing something up, any chance you could help?
Unfortunately I don't have the RAVPOWER hub so I can't help...sorry, and I hope you find a solution. 👍
Hi Mike, Very interesting. I am using an Ipad app called FE File Explorer which works well.
When I am in a location without wifi, I use a RavPower filehub WD0009 with a ssd attached.
This unit also allows a one touch operation to copy your sd cards for backup plus enables you to connect via ethernet to a typical Hotel internet.
Give it a try and see how it compares.
Got excited about this but RX100m4 doesn’t seem to have the FTP setting. Looks like I’m stuck with an On the go wired card ready. Not sure if it can be done with this camera. Maybe you might know? Thanks anyway
Unfortunately the mkiv came out quite a while before they introduced the FTP file sharing system to the Sony cameras.
Was that a Foo fighter song "Pretty Fly for a Wifi?" Sounds like one.
Haha!! Nope, that a play on the song from Offspring, Pretty Fly for a White Guy!! 😆😆😆

That's cool, thank you. So..how you enjoying Krung Thep / Thailand. I'm down in Prachuap Khiri Khan. Hope the teaching thing is working out well for the wife. Be Safe.
It is a cool function isn't it!
Thailand is fun...although annoying with all of the lockdowns and restrictions...although we have been on a few trips down to the south of Petchaburi, and also down to Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park which is fantastic!
How are things down there at the moment?
@@mikesphotography All good here. Except for lack of customers (weekenders) for vendors on surf side rd, all is fairly normal. Just one road parallel to surf, and busy. As busy as this small town every gets. Not being the tourist hotspot at any time. The plus of living here. Enjoy
Hey can I upload any video-files this way or just photos?
ciao Mike, thanks a lot for the tutorial!
There is a way to send the pictures manually instead of send it automatically to phone? So i can select what i prefer and send...thanks in advance!!
Ciao Francesco!
I am not sure there is ... I think they have updated the app since making this video, so if you just want to select a handful of images, you can do it through that ... also I hear the app now lets you download full size images, but I haven't tried it yet.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
A few of the good Android file management apps like Solid Explorer can also run an FTP server, I have tried several servers over the past several weeks (also on a Huawei top end device) and the issue is with the connectivity issues on the cameras end. The connection is as flakey as hell on my a7iii. The connection drops constantly. Sony needs to up their game like Jeahn Laffitte said.
Interesting. I only had it drop out a lot when set to sending individual files only. When I had it set to auto and send all, it seemed to keep the connection with my phone in my backpack.
For Samsung Phone/Tablet users...OTG + usb cable = Fast transfer for both RAW and JPEG full sized images. 😁👍🏽 I shoot with sony
Forgive my ignorance but what is otg?
@@jamesbland5568 OTG = “on the go” an Android feature that enables file transfer via cable from usb device to Android device. E.g., USB type C thumb drive can be connected directly to Android device.
@@paulm8157 brilliant thankyou very much!
Thanks for the tip. 😁👍
If it is only full size JPGs and RAWs your after, you can use the Imaging Edge App from Sony and set the Import size to Original in the Settings. Works okay.
This works without Home-Wifi or Cellular singe the camera creates a Direct Wifi connection between camera and phone.
That is true, but I've found the app to be a lot less reliable than this setup.
Thanks for watching 👍
Hi Mike, hot it all working at last, is there any way to see your images come in to a full screen on the ipad as you shoot them basically as you would see on a tethered setup in capture one etc
Hey Mike,
I'm not sure about that. That would be a great function but I think that would come down to the app in the ipad ... and I don't think there is one that would do that at the moment.
Wow. Thank you so much. I just have a question about the app, mine doesn’t automatically save the raw images from the camera to my iPhone and there’s no option on the app to save it to my gallery. Please help. Thank you.
Which app were you using? Was it the same one as I was using with the iphone I showed at the start?
@@mikesphotography yes, same app.
Is there an easy way to transfer Raw files from A7Rii to my android phone or tablet? A7rii does not have FTP I believe.
Hi! Is it possible with an a6400?
I have the Sony a7riii and only 1 page. I click on FTP transfer and it disconnects w error. What am I doing wrong
where's the app link? I can't find it
Hi great tutorial, does it work for the A7R3a
It should do. As long as you have the FTP option in the menu.
Does the Android phone FTP method require mobile data? If so, while we're out and about taking pictures and having the camera sent raw and multiple jpgs, does that mean that we'll have to pay insane amount of money for the extra mobile data? Or is there a way to have the phone and camera connect directly to each other sort of like a LAN without an actual wifi router?
It's basically like a LAN with the hotspot of your phone.
Thanks for watching 👍
Wow, thank you Mike! I have been wondering how to set this up for a long time. I just could not get it to work. So thank you very much for the detailed explaination.
Quick question though; Does the transfer cost data from your mobile plan? I'm really curious about that. If it does, making it upload continuesly might be a bit expensive.
No worries, it was good to finally work out how to do it properly as there aren't any other videos I could find that explain it clearly.
This shouldn't cost you any money with data as you're setting up your hotspot and you're transferring through the hotspot to your phone and not over the internet. So basically it is transfering over a local area network of the hotspot system.
I hope that makes sense. 😁👍
@@mikesphotography definitely makes sense! That makes it a great option for when I'm out and about in nature and want to quickly share something. Thank you again 😊
Is it possible to do this without a wifi network or a phone hotspot set up (ie through WiFi Direct or something similar)?
That's a good question ... and honestly, I'm not sure...
Please suggest for Sony a6400
For the Sony A6400 I don't think it has this function so you would have to transfer the images through the app.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
so I did all like you said, videos transferred but they dont have audio. What gives?
How do you send all the photos youve taken already?
so not availble on any of the apsc cameras like the 6600?? 😢
Unfortunately not. 😩
hmm i can transfer with the imagine edge app from sony to my iphone or ipad full res uncrompressed raw images. with the sony a1
So they have updated the app since I made this video giving the option to transfer full res images.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
This tutorial will work for me with SONY A7R3?
If the latest firmware gives you the FTP option in the menus, then yes. 👍
@@mikesphotography Yes there is ftp access but I can't connect. I'll take about a day off to be able to connect the SONY camera to the phone.
Is is possible to do with without any internet connection? I would like to just connect the camera (a7r5) to the iPad, without any other network involved. Thanks!
Looks like the answer is "no".
You should be able to if your ipad has the option to set up a hotspot. Then it will use the wifi that is created as the hotspot and connect to that.
@@mikesphotography Thanks!!
I am unable to setup any of the iOS FTP clients I have to work with a hotspot. All work fine on wireless…suggestions?
I'm not sure why it would do that...🤔
i followed all the steps and the photos on my phone gallery are somewhat there but they cant be loaded so i cant see them. is there any quick tip for that? * they are visible in lightroom mobile app although :p
That is because they are raw files. The gallery app can't read RAW files, so you would have to process them in lightroom and export them as Jpegs. the other way to do it is to set the file type to jpeg in the FTP transfer Function menu page 3.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
@@mikesphotography thanks a lot! this tutorial was what i was looking for!
May i know why people choose to shoot raw rather than in jpeg?
Why in the iOS app I see invalid IP Address?
When i turn on the ftp sharing it says invalid ip address
