Biggest mistake we made was asking Putin if he was going to invade and when he said no we didn't say, well if you do we are going to fight alongside Ukraine if asked by them. He would have had no answer to that and he would have known what the consequences would be. Letting a bully dictate the terms of engagement is such a rookie error.

Unfortunately, fighting alongside the Ukrainians was never considered and everyone knew it. Ukraine was doomed to be invaded because the West and the US never took the ultimate pledge of going to war for them and Rash Putin knew it well. However, I do believe that the Poles will eventually enter the war alongside Ukraine. Even without NATO help. The Balts will possibly follow suit

We couldn't have said we would fight alongside Ukraine, West was not even 10% prepared compared to Ru.
The mismatch would have quickly escalated.
The West would have had to try to enforce a NFZ over Ukraine, whilst getting targeted by SAM's on Russian soil....attack Russian territory?

Admiral Alan West is right on the spot, true, I have myself came to think that all the promises haven't been meet, and these poor soldiers have been let down on top of it all these suffering casualties and destruction of their country in the meantime, all the western nations should realise that these soldiers are fighting for the whole world peace in the end.

Yes I agree. The existential crisis which seems to be taken far too lightly by far too many people.
All efforts should be made to back the Ukrainian people and defence forces.
Anything less is not just a betrayal of them, but a betrayal of ourselves.

Let's keep sth in mind here: Russia has a GDP of 1.5 Trillion USD and is now facing a major contraction of that. The West spends 1.6 Trillion on Defense yearly. The main guy in the arena is: The USA Europe also needs to step it up but right now the USA is the most powerful ally Ukraine can hope and wish for. Putin has no chance in outspending or outproducing the West. His invasion is botched down and sooner or later Putin cannot hope to win a battle of attrition with a small country of 140 Million people battling the biggest military and economic block: The West. We have made mistakes yes but overall this is a huge gigantic power mismatch...

The Ukraine has no navy, a tiny air force and only an army with Soviet surplus weapons. They kicked them out of the Kiev and Charkov area. You may need to review your figures. it is well known our sub count is much higher than 2 for a start. when you quote army not all are direct combatants, that is nearer 20-25k. Better to look at what we project in combined arms terms and not numbers in isolation and what types of force we can project in a theatre of war. 1000 of our professionally trained infantry is worth 5000-7000 of theirs. Ukraine has proved that already.

Sorry to have to say it, but 90% of these people have nothing , or next to nothing to offer the UK. If they wanted to claim asylum, then claim it in France. If NATO puts forces and equipment in border countries to Ukraine and Russia, will NATO anti aircraft systems not lock on to Russian planes near the borders and large parts of the Ukraine ? It must be quite unsettling for a Russian plane to fly into Ukraine and immediately get a signal that a modern NATO missile system has a lock on them, even without a missile being fired. In my opinion NATO should make the border and much of the airspace of the Ukraine into an electronic nightmare for the Russians.

I love how people blame "the government" for failing to take adequate measures to protect national security whilst constantly being the voice that rejects any increase in government expenditure. People voted for successive governments that pursued a low-growth policy not just once, but 8 or 9 times in a row. That isn't an accident. That isn't "Downing Street incompetence". That is apathy across the board right down to the electorate. And if someone wants to bring up the "lack of information" dilemma with the electorate not having sufficient information...then that goes right back to the electorate for voting in governments who cut back on education and stood by while investigative journalism was all but dismantled.
Every nation gets the government it deserves. In any democracy people get the leaders they deserve. Not necessarily the ones they want or need.

It's incumbent on those seeking political office to understand their responsibility is to educatr the public on matters of protecting the homeland. Unfortunately, politicians many with personal agendas, have to deal with electorates who have taken their freedom and security for granted and only make token investments in armaments.
For over 60 years, some couldn't perceive Freedom being taken away by an external enemy assisted perhaps by subversives and anarchists at home. They are now experiencing shock over the Ukraine.
Freedom isn't free and to preserve it means allocating human and financial resources for that purpose.

@@derekking5386 Cutting defense expenditure during a prolonged time of peace would seem like a sensible thing to do. But you need to pay keen attention to potential antagonists and make sure your expenditure allows you to respond to any sudden change in posture they might make.
The US is a little different in this matter but in Europe the primary problem is the narrow electoral margins and the short electoral cycles. Promises like to be made and to keep those promises it was more convenient to cut defense spending than other areas. After all, the USA will save the day in an emergency. That approach is now backfiring rather spectacularly and a lot of younger people in Europe are now having a very rude awakening OR are just living in denial over how bad the situation could become in an instant...

This is a European war. I'm glad that we are contributing so much of our substance and our attention to the defense of eastern Europe. But that defense will be minimal without the united efforts of the EU and its states, particularly France and Germany. It's incredible that Poland is paying above and beyond the 2% defense spending, but France and Germany (the _de facto_ leaders of Europe) are not. It's not like they're strapped for cash either (not when compared to other EU states). In both cases it's the socio-cultural and political character of both nations that prevents them from doing the necessary thing. But if they want a strong and united Europe where they're in the driving seat (instead of America), then they need to mean it by participating and by being proactive and involved. Europe lacks unity and unanimity in its response, because of France's resentment at American dominance/leadership, and because of Germany's lack of confidence in military matters.

The last thing Scholz wanted to do was to take the lead militarily. A nightmare scenario for a pacifist German nation. This explains the hesitancy here which was rightly criticized. But let's be fair, the turnaround for a Green govt. here has been nothing short of remarkable. There has been a crass underinvestment in the Bundeswehr and this has really been a wake-up call for the Germans. The response from the Brits has made me proud - after so many awful things (like sending refugees to Rwanda).

This was always going to happen. We persuaded Ukraine to disarm itself of nuclear weapons unilaterally in 1994 with the assurace they would be defended. That 'we' was GB + USA, not NATO even. A regime loses its raison d'etre and binding ethos - i.e. Marxism - then what takes its place ? Gangsters and not just in Russia. All this tosh about promoting democracy. Such regions there will always need to be a strong man to control the wolves. If the Ukraine still had nukes then with their nationalist government maybe they now would be the bad guy. We don't understand these peoples. They endured Genghis Khan and his successors.

The media whipped themselves into a frenzy thinking that this was all over after the Russian failures. How can they be so blind or so ill-educated about geo-politics and strategy that they just didn't see the reality? This is just the beginning! In the next fews years we will be looking back on this moment in time and be asking ourselves "why did we not massively arm and mobilize". This is the time that factories producing cars need to clear the lines for producing armoured vehicles. Ship yards to go into overdrive, armaments factories to stockpile. We have to look at things from The World Community angle as well as NATO and western alliances. A part of the human family is being brutally attacked by the second most powerful military in the world and the infrastructure that has been destroyed will take decades to rebuild let alone the psychlogical wounds the children caught up in the fighting will carry all their lives. Imagine your village, town or city being taken over by an invading army and then orphaned children picked up and sent away to an obscure part of their empire to be reindoctrinated as Russian citizens! What kind of mind-blow is that going to be like when those kids grow up? Whether or not Putin chooses to be a part of the world community is his problem, but we should all stand shoulder-to-shoulder until a sister country is out of harm's way. We've got to keep this story in the news and keep having people like Royal Navy Admiral Alan West chiming in from time to time to remind us over and over that we must not let our eye off the ball. You can bet that North Korea and China are going to be cooking up schemes to make the Ukrainian war look like a walk in the park. WE must not stop helping the Ukrainians until every Russian soldier has departed from Ukrainian sovereign territory.

Space debris can travel at 40,000 kilometres an hour. Majority of satellites orbiting the Earth do so at altitudes between 160 and 2,000 kilometers. At altitudes of 800 km, the time for orbital decay is often measured in centuries. Above 1,000 km, orbital debris will normally continue circling the Earth for a thousand years or more. Space debris orbits around the earth at tremendous speeds - about 15,700 miles per hour in low Earth orbit - it could cause significant damage to a satellite or a spacecraft in case of a collision. Kessler syndrome. In 1978, NASA’s Donald Kessler suggested that “as the number of satellites rose, so would the risk of accidental collisions. The resulting debris would take out further satellites, sparking a chain reaction that would swiftly encircle the planet with a vast cloud of debris. Orbits would then become unusable because anything placed up there would be sandblasted into smithereens, exacerbating the problem. Eventually our access to space would be lost.”

Putin only understands strength and the minute NATO stands up and reacts he will back down that's a guarantee he is terrified of NATO and wants none of it. The West has squandered opportunities to negate the brutality of this conflict by not letting it be known to Putin that if he attacks civilians or interferes with food shipments or has his fighters buzzing NATO borders there would be a cost and severe consequences. The nuclear threats are all he has in his mind to try to deter NATO because he knows his military conventionally is not deterring NATO one iota and all it's done is strengthen NATO bringing Sweden and Finland into the alliance and possibly Ukraine in the future and now he's going to have 300,000 plus NATO soldiers on his borders.. he doesn't want to die he's a narcissist and he's completely stuck on himself and he knows if he as much as farts on the button it will be not only his end but the end of Russia as we know it, he won't make that mistake. What needs to happen immediately is Russia needs to be at least kicked out of the UN and labeled as state-sponsored terrorist for their continued attacking a civilians Belarus as well for allowing it from their territory and the US and British Navy should immediately establish a corridor for the grain shipments and other supplies to be shipped out without interference from Russia or any other country.

For the trolls: Putin wanted to stop NATO expansion; Finland and Sweden are new NATO candidates. Putin wanted to keep Ukraine from joining the European Union; Ukraine is now a candidate for the European Union. Putin said that sanctions were not working; last Friday, Russia defaulted on its international debt payments for the first time since 1918. Putin apologists say that Russia is not responsible for the default because of force majeure, because of war. Putin shot himself in the foot; he calls this action a "special military operation", and did not declare war, therefore force majeure does not apply.

@@ericconnor8419 Most countries have too small a military to fight Russia alone. Also the ability to produce military equipment on mass is small in the UK. We can upgrade to Challenger 2 to Challenger 3 but Challenger 2 tanks are no longer manufactured.
Challenger 2s had been upgraded with a new passive armour package, including the use of add-on armour manufactured by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems of Israel.
Challenger 3 uses the Rheinmetall L55 120 mm smoothbore gun. The Germany are likely moving to the Rheinmetall Rh-130 L/51. The active protection systems for the uk's tanks will also come from another country.
All these parts are made in other countries. Every other country is going to buy parts and then produce these parts for their own armies. There is just not the production for a war. This is caused by cuts.
British Army's plans to upgrade 148 Challenger 2 tanks and designate them Challenger 3. This is too small a tank force, Russia used something like 2500 tanks to attack Ukraine. They have 1000's left. Reason for low UK army tank number is cuts.
NATO has the forces but EU countries have cut their armies to nothing. The USA has something like 5,000 active and approx. 3,000 stored. The UK army has been cut to near uselessness.
