  • “The public regard Brexit as a dirty great mess, a great pile of poo.”
    Why is no one talking about Brexit in this election campaign?
    Despite being one of the most dominant issues of British politics in recent years, Peter Mandelson says it's not coming up on the doorstep during this election campaign, while Polly Mackenzie reckons the time will come when Britain will rejoin the EU.
    Daniel Finkelstein reacts to the news that the Conservative Party is withdrawing support from candidates Craig Williams and Laura Saunders in light of the election betting scandal.

    If I thought there was any possibility of us rejoining the SM and CU, let alone the EU, in the next five years I’d be furious about Labour’s position on this. As it stands, anything other than their public position would be promising more than can be delivered and helps no one. What they need to do is win the argument so that when the next election comes they can get a mandate to start making progress towards rejoining.

    The brexit Paradox is that any govt capable of delivering brexit wouldn't. The brexit reality is that voters shrewd enough to decode brexit would have rejected it. Result - an inept/venal govt conned a majority of gullible/deluded electors. The brexit tragedy is that it will take years to recover from this 12 bore, self-inflicted wound.

      I mostly agree however, not sure if delivering a 'good' brexit was possible. We must accept we made a mistake, not sugarcoat it (it wasn't delivered as N.Farage could have delivered it) and look to the future which is in colaboration with the EU. We have no levarage on the world stage, Modi simply disrespected Sunak to his face, the US trade deal is going nowhere, not sure what we have with China.

      At 30:20 Peter Mandelson nails it - there has to be cross-party agreement because it will take decades to join so there is no point starting that process until all main political parties are agreed. This is why people complaining that they won't vote Labour if Starmer doesn't promise to reverse Brexit display very little understanding of the situation. That position is naive and ill-informed.
      I knew it would be decades of pain which is why I moved to Ireland in 2020 and immediately rejoined the EU.

      I don't think it was mentioned specifically but there was a lot of talk about having an 'independent trade policy', which I presume rules out a customs union so that could be construed that way. It's not something I suspect most people are too worried about, tbh (though why we would have import taxes on oranges coming into the UK isn't obvious but that's what you get with a customs union!). Tariffs on Chinese electric cars are interesting - the EU will be imposing them to protect its car industry but as we don't really have one of those now maybe we shouldn't and the consumer will benefit.

    Mandelson says he thinks we should "Change our economy to deal with Brexit, to allow us to thrive..." or words to that affect. Now, all those London media bubble types are far, far cleverer than me, but I would be grateful if they could tell me how a major first-world, European country with a population of 65 Million, can manufacture an economy that can thrive by NOT Exporting Anything to our nearest, richest neighbours...?
    Our European neighbours have found these things called "Factories" extremely useful when it comes to GDP and incomes. As far as I'm aware, France, Spain, Germany and Italy have no plans at all to shut down all their manufacturing facilities, anytime soon....but hey, if the UK can make us all rich by selling Burgers and Insurance Policies....

      Afaics, being a "major first-world, European country with a population of 65 Million" (in fact more like 68m at present and with a GDP that on nominal measure is projected to exceed $3.495tn this year; so easily Europe's 2nd largest) we AND the EU central Politbureau both aimed at concluding a de facto bilateral FTA. Thus, although regrettably our loathsome Quisling excuse for a government made no real effort to extract anywhere near the terms that would have been available, one WAS concluded and UK/EU trade last year actually still exceeded 40% of our global total. So at a rough guess, was >£700bn. Or slightly more than " NOT Exporting Anything".🙄
      And ALL WITHOUT US STILL BEING HOGTIED INTO THE NASCENT FEDERALIST NIGHTMARE MANY EU STATES AND PEOPLES REMAIN DETERMINED TO RESIST.

    The Common Market was supposed to be a Single Market from the outset. In order to implement this there were countless standards that needed every country to agree on, often taking more than a decade for each standard. The 1992 "Single Market" was a different approach - whatever standard was ok in one member country was good for all e..g if you had a banking license in London then you are good for opening a branch in Milan. What Starmer and co want to do is the follow pre 1992 approach and painfully negotiate one standard at a time to align with the rest of the EU. This will take a generation. Either don't bother and hope we get a trade deal with Polynesia or go back into the Single Market.

      There’s about half the amount of food on the shelves as there used to be so, y’know, theres that… As for accountability you do raise an interesting point. The Tories opposed Brexit before the referendum. After the referendum, many of them did their level best to sabotage, obstruct or at least dilute Brexit rather than committing to fully implementing the result of their own referendum - that was the cause of the mess. Simple fact: whether you wanted Brexit or not, it is a reality and it is irreversible, thankfully. We will now either swim or sink as a non-EU country.

    • @JohnSmall314
      @JohnSmall314 3 дні тому

      " many of them did their level best to sabotage, obstruct or at least dilute Brexit"
      Do keep up with the news. Brexit was negotiated by ardent Brexiters and we got the hardest Brexit possible without actually blowing up the country.
      There is something called "Reality" which is non-partisan and generally not very accommodating to people's fantasies. It easy to live in a world of fantasy when you don't have to actually deal with reality.
      Although many Brexiters in government would love to live in La-La-Land, reality keeps them somewhat bound to planet Earth.
      That's why Rees-Mogg, about as La-La-Land Brexity as you can get, admitted that it would be a bad idea for Britain to impose import checks on goods coming from the EU as we should be doing under WTO rules. He said it would damage our economy.
      Now ardent Brexiters might say that was 'diluting Brexit' and he's a turncoat for admitting that reality has some sort of say in how the country is run. But there's only so far into La-La-Land Brexit the government can go before people start to notice that it's a complete and utter disaster.
      Which is why the government has been delaying and delaying and delaying import checks on goods from the EU for as long as possible.
      So 'diluting Brexit' means staying just this side of full on La-La-Land crazy and hoping that people don't notice that the country has become a train wreck. Which has been Tory party policy for the last few years.

      @JohnSmall314 2 дні тому

      Or to put it another way. Starmer has such a low opinion of the cognitive abilities of Brexit voters that he thinks it's impossible to present them with facts and reasoned arguments to get them to wake up from their delusions. Best let them keep their delusions and hope they'll vote Labour.
      Politicians seem to believe that voting Brexit is like an incurable brain disease. A sort of leprosy of the mind. Once a Brexit voter always a Brexit voter and no amount of facts and reason can ever cure the disease.
      But people are not that dim. Many are waking up from the Brexit delusion and are amenable to facts and reason. A little bit of confident leadership can draw them away from the cult of unreason.

      "That's why the UK in ONLY worlds 4th largest exporter of goods and services"
      Err no, check the recent Sky news analysis of this claim. A journalist doing some actual research!!!!. Search for "Sunak claims 'Brexit Britain' became world's fourth biggest exporter - is he right?"
      It turns out that if we exclude gold exports we're the 6th largest exporter of goods and services.
      Excluding gold exports the UK has been going down the rankings since Brexit. The reason for the gold exports is that a lot of gold is stored in London, normally buyers leave it in vaults in London when they buy it from sellers who have it in vaults in London. But recently the physical gold has been moved out of the country. Hence the rise in our exports.
      Obvious question, why are people moving physical gold out of the country? Moving gold around and storing it safely is a big palavar which is why it's mostly left in vaults in London while the ownership just changes hands.
      What wasn't mentioned in the programme on Sky News was that the biggest buyer of gold is China. They're selling off their holdings of US Treasuries, buying gold and physically moving it to China because they expect to be shut out of the global financial markets when they invade Taiwan.
      From China's point of view the future value of their US Treasuries is zero. It looks like they're planning to use physical gold to trade once they're shut out of the global banking system after invading Taiwan.
      The other big export is 'financial services' which means money laundering and tax evasion for kleptocrats, oligarchs and very rich people who want to hide their money.
      So a very large fraction of our 'exports' are helping China prepare to invade Taiwan, and helping rich criminals hide their money. Great way to run a country!
      Of course none of it is any benefit to ordinary people which is why the country is a train wreck.
