  • On Saturday 14 October a referendum will be held, and Australians will be asked to vote on changing the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia.
We recently asked the community what questions they have about the Voice to Parliament and the referendum. In this video Mayor Karen Redman facilitates a Q&A session with our special guest Dale Agius, the Commissioner for First Nations Voice SA to help answer these.
If you would like to better understand a specific question, please see the video timestamps below:
3:08 Where did the idea of a Voice to Parliament come from? Was it from Aboriginal people or from politicians?
8:09 Why is it important for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to be included in the constitution?
10:46 What opportunities will a Voice to Parliament create for Aboriginal people and their communities?
13:47 Will a Voice to Parliament help Indigenous communities at ground level?
17:46 What benefits will it bring to the broader community/society?
21:16 Why do you suppose some Indigenous peoples are suggesting voting No?
25:16 How will a Voice to Parliament function?
26:26 What is the best way / best sources of information to learn more about the Voice?

Question: why did ATSIC fail and what measures will be put in place to ensure the proposed new body doesn’t become ATSIC 2.0 with Constitutional permanence?
