Disco Tex & His Sex-o-lettes ~ Get Dancin' 1974 Disco Purrfection Version

  • Four years before the Village People made their gay macho debut, celebrity hairdresser Monti Rock III (born Joseph Montenez Jr on May 29, 1942) was making the rounds of "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson and "The Merv Griffin Show" dressed as a Mack Daddy in furs, rings and hat as kind of a running gay joke.
His big, effusive personality and quick wit made him a media darling and producer Bob Crewe (he of Four Seasons fame) suggested that Monti form a studio disco group. Out of that meeting came Disco Tex & His Sex-o-lettes and the iconic "Get Dancin'". Written by Kenny Nolan (Firefly, "I Like Dreaming") and Crewe, the song took the disco sound to a new level by adding party crowd sounds when they recorded the song to give it a live feeling.
This collaboration was important as it was the first time that gay men were making the music rather than remixing the song or just playing it in the clubs. The album art conveyed a man with rings on every finger, long flowing robes and even a feather boa designed to appeal to gay men, as flashy as Liberace.
The group was comprised of Monti Rock III, Cindy Bullens (who would go on to record a song for "Grease" in 1978), Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan. "get Dancin'" became a #10 Hot100 hit and #8 in Canada and the UK. The song was also the first record to be released as a 10" single and the second to break out of the gay clubs and onto mainstream radio after Love Unlimited Orchestra's "Love's Theme".
If you saw "Saturday Night Fever", you saw Monti, he was the foul mouthed macho Latino DJ. As a cultural touchstone, "Get Dancin'" was included in two Simpsons episodes, "Bart VS Thanskgiving" and "I'm Going To Praiseland" but credited to "Hooray For Everything".
The official follow up was "I Wanna Dance Wit' Choo (Doo Dat Dance)" which peaked at #23 pop and #7 disco then never had another top 40 hit and the band broke up in 1982.

Back in 1979 I was 5 and just starting to listen to records. An older siblings friend left this 45 by the family turntable. I had to play it since it looked so inviting. Loved it and then my love for disco started that day and has never ended.

I was 8 years old when this came out. Two months before George McCrae's Rock Your Baby in July 1974. I went Disco crazy 🤣 after those two were released. The real Disco music was found in the gay underground clubs and was started there in the early 70's 😮. Missed those days very dearly.

Star wars was nonexistant in 1974. I used to collect issues of a magazine called Song Hits which had all the lyrics of the famous songs. These sounds were stuck in a little memory bank forgotten in the back and filled with dust. And now i found the key to my early childhood.

A couple of years ago my older brother (born 1954) asked me (born 1961) what was the first disco song. It’s probably debatable but I told him Get Dancin’ as it had all the elements of disco not to mention I also had/have the 45 single. I’ve always loved the song and praise you for giving it your treatment.

I"m so happy this was recorded way back in the Way Back Then Days, the style of the recording, the overlay of vocal tracks over the music tracks, it was a gimmick used often in ''live'' records, 72 had several talk over the music political comedy records using 'sampling'. most of you missed the 70's HA HA - Nelson Munce.

I’m 50 years old born in 73 but for some crazy reason this was my song I would dance to as a young kid. I still have the 45 record (not in the best shape anymore). This song brings back so many emotions and what’s crazy is I haven’t heard the song in so long, but still remember it so well. I was looking at the 45 record not long ago along with a bunch of other ones. My mom and dad kept them in some spindle looking thing so all the records don’t look like they’re in the best shape, it’s crazy what you remember it’s also crazy to think how long ago that song came out. Thanks for posting it.

Couples would take turns dancing and strolling between the lines, Soul Train style. I didn’t have the album with this song; only the 45. When it would end, I’d quickly flip it over to the “B” side which had the rest of the song. 🤣 That’s as good as it was going to get in 1975!

Memories... Back in NYC in the Bronx around 1976 I lived in a building on the 5th floor and this young lady was apart of the LGBT community, they use to throw parties and invite me... these ladies would show up in pen-strip zoot suits, wing tip shoes to match and hats... there were hard wood floors back then, you had to see this show... they would be stomping in unison and tapping with those tap shoes. You haven't partied until you've done it old school NY style.
