Crazy that they didn't talk at all about the drums. Like at all. Whoever mic'd and mixed those drums deserves a raise. Kontos' parts & execution are amazing.
As others have said -- Burn My Eyes is one of the ALL TIME great debut albums, not just in metal, but in most genres. For me, this is the greatest guitar tone ever captured -- in any country, on any world, in any solar system, in any galaxy.
Great reaction! Hopefully you'll do something from Machine Head's album the Blackening too.. maybe Clenching the Fists of Dissent or A Farewell to Arms
Still love this Album after all those years! Remember MH's great shows, supporting Slayer on their first european Tour back in '94 and at Dynamo Open Air '95!!!
Totally with Richard on Halo, one of the best tracks from probably my favourite Machine Head album. I'd LOVE to hear Judson's reaction to the dueling solos from Clenching the Fists of Dissent. Those classically inspired runs are just too damn awesome. And after he's had his fill of The Blackening, Through the Ashes of Empires and all that stuff, then it'll be time to broadside him completely with some Burning Red era Rob Flynn vocal gymnastics. A little Desire to Fire or From this Day perhaps? XD
Great reaction. "Judgement Day - OST" - it is a collection of Songs from a Rap/HipHop-Artist & a Metal-Band - very Crossover, lot's of Groove-Metal-Elements. Some other Bands that fit in that era would be Faith No More or Life of Agony or - you mentioned it halfway - White Zombie. :) P.S.: I love to see Judson rocking.
I saw them live in 2009 and really enjoyed them, though i do find them a bit formulaic sometimes. Halo would be a good next step i think. A couple of other tracks i like are Beautiful Mourning, Locust and Darkness Within.
Man, I loved this album back in my early teen years. I even learned to play this song on guitar. I can't say this album (or "The More Things Change..." which I also loved) have survived the test of time for me all that well, though. They're still good, just that having expanded my musical horizons into more extreme metal as I reached my late teens and the decades of being involved in the metal scene since just makes it seem far more simplistic and far less impactful than when my uninitiated ears first heard this album in the mid 90ies. The drumming on this album is probably my favorite part... but going from bands like First Fragment, Origin, Emperor and Archspire back to this make it seem tame in comparison!
I remember the Machine Head vibe, the 90s vibe. But I remember the "Old Man" video the most, and Masterpiece.. btw. no bullshit, no special effects, just a musical punch in the face. btw2 I recommend a great song for Judson, the new single from Opeth "§1" ... I can't wait for the comments: "weird, weird"
As for groove metal, I write a lot of that as it's my favorite subgenre. I mightily recommend Edgecrusher (Fear Factory), Halo (Machine Head), and Saw (Orbit Culture).
One of the best debuts of all time. Robb hit it out of the ballpark after leaving Vio-lence. I don't get the Rob Zombie comparison. I Like Flynn's vocals. "LET FREEDOM RING WITH A SHOTGUN BLAST" I love that. Every song on BME is fantastic, and so h e a v y. Outstanding pick Richard. Killing it.
You're right in that they got better technically over time, though one of my favorites is one of their most simplistic songs "My Misery" off the Demon Knight night soundtrack. It's extremely difficult to find the song online though (the right version). If you ever want to do it, hit me up, and I can send it to you; I have the soundtrack.version. Lyrically, my favorite song of theirs is "In Comes the Flood". It's just so relatable (especially here in the states). "I AM Hell"... now that's an epic song of theirs! Also White Zombie > than Rob Zombie. The music went from, well... music (with some sampling, but it was cool and different) to all sampling with a sprinkling of music. His stuff now is so overproduced with literal noise there's nothing there to enjoy. It's like listening to tv static. White Zombie though... they have two albums that are (in my humble opinion) back to back gemstones in La Sexorcisto... and Astro-Creep 2000.
Richard - Curious if you like Robb’s vocals on the slightly later stuff. Like on the Through the Ashes of the Empire or The Blackening albums. He has a lot more range on those albums and future ones. Screaming, clean singing, harsh vocals, etc. Keep up the great content! PS: With all you said about Rob Zombie, we’d still love to see you and Judson do a reaction or 2 to a Rob Zombie or White Zombie song!
Machine Head is still active and touring. Their gig at Hellfest 2024 was uploaded on YT by ARTE Concert: go check it, the band and the sound are so good that it could be featured on this channel for a future reaction.
Machine head darkness within pls. I think judson would like that one ☺️ And agree, that the reason u may not like the vocals coz it does sound like the typical metal vocals a lay person would think of. I'd consider them a good gateway band to metal. Yes, id consider Halo to be one of their popular ones. Also, totally unrelated, pls do some rishloo (tho would not be considered metal)
I was not a fan of Machine Head until the Blackening came out, for all the reasons both of you cover. That album though has this more progressive nature and it unlocked their back catalogue to me. Still prefer their later stuff but have to acknowledge Davidian is a bona fide classic.
It's weird that this track has by far the most listens on this album ( on spotify anyway) There's a couple of other tracks I would have chosen before this for a first listen tbf.
You do know that if you ever do another Machine Head song it has to be something from The Blackening, right? May I suggest Halo in such a case? Otherwise Darkness Within is a pretty good song to show a different vocal style (which allegedly is from the next album, but anyway...).
I like Machine Head more when he sings, I don't like growling or whatever it's called. Also their cover of The Police, message in a bottle is great. One of my favorite songs is Sail Into The Black, really unique and awesome build up
to help, all of this stuff is post-thrash in the very literal sense, it comes out of thrash technique but it isn't thrash, it has divergent aims to thrash, etc. Like post-punk to punk. So all this stuff was called 'power groove', 'groove metal', 'industrial metal' (I kid you not, metalheads in the 90s were stupid when it came to other genres) and all sorts of things and it's a wide umbrella meant to catch anything from Prong to Coroner to Machine Head and Pantera et al, all these bands thought at the time that metal was dead or dying as a trend and did not consider themselves straight-up metal bands in the Judas Priest sense anymore, at least from a certain period onwards. Main dude in Machine Head comes from a very thrashy band called Exhorder (that Pantera ripped off). Only retroactively do we rehabilitate this power groove stuff as part of the broad heavy metal canon and only in an uneasy way (because metal didn't die it turns out), and at the time all this stuff that sounded like nu metal - or became nu metal - was anathema to actual metalheads often. There's a lot of great expressive and experimental music that comes out of thrash that didn't become nu metal to make a comparison (you really should listen to Coroner, they are a metal band so far ahead of the curve they still sound like they come from the future). I don't mean to tell you 'you should call this post-thrash' as these other names have been ingrained in the history of the culture and I actually care very little to talk about genre names etc. I am trying to explain the historical context of this kind of music to you: it's thrash people growing up and making their sound crossover more towards hip hop, hardcore, alternative metal etc because metal was dying. The emphasis on groove meant the deconstruction of the choppy thrash riff. A LOAD of mid90s successful bands with a more broad sound come from early speed metal or thrash roots (you'd be really surprised if you go looking in lineups). Still think this is a great song. Striking riffs, interesting riff variations and I think the drummer steals the show. The vocal is unconvincing, because this dude was generally unconvincing.
Nite 3 was the best, followed by nite 1, nite 2 was ok but the secret set ambient jam was totally relaxing after a long day.. day 4 sucked, it was so hot I couldn't care about the music \m/
Have you considered Vader? Specifically De Profundis album? It's top writing but, it could be too fast at times. Also, have you done Desperate Cry yet? And why not if not??
Perhaps go a bit more obscure with some early Exhorder, as kind of exploring some sort of roots of the groove-bent thrash that was certainly influential on Pantera (who acknowledge them as an influence to which Exhorder claimed that Pantera is of course not a rip off and that they worked for their well deserved fame much more than Exhorder back in the day). Just a suggestion.
I have never really understood the reason for the category of 'groove metal'. I remember discovering Sepultura and Pantera at the same time and never really felt like they belonged in the same category.
I could never really get into Machine Head, closest I got was with The Blackening. It would be a fantastic album if it just had the fat trimmed, but several of the songs just kinda... keep going. They don't really "drag" badly and don't feel obviously padded with chorus spam or something so it isn't as bad as some other bands/albums, but still could use some time in editing. Then again, as I get older I find myself enjoying more EPs and 35-ish minute albums that don't waste a lot of time. I much prefer the "leave 'em wanting more" approach.
Davidian by Machine Head is really good (but boring aswell)... Spiritual T-shirt even better But lets go towards that Black Metal Road MGLA Anyway ...Big grettingzzz from Hamburg, Germany 🥰🥰🥰
Rob is great on guitar, not so much at singing. They kill it live, so many good riffs. I would argue Lamb of of God could be considered groove metal, Ashes of the Wake especially
One of THE best debut albums ever! Still sounds fresh and exciting all these years later 🤗
Best debut album of the 90'S. Kontos was such a BEAST
Them and RATM
Hasn't aged a damn day. A GOAT of a debut
Crazy that they didn't talk at all about the drums. Like at all. Whoever mic'd and mixed those drums deserves a raise. Kontos' parts & execution are amazing.
Fuck ya dude. That album was a killer drum shop. And I don't even play drums
Exactly, and you can hear all the cymbal work unlike in the modern style of "great" mixing.
As others have said -- Burn My Eyes is one of the ALL TIME great debut albums, not just in metal, but in most genres. For me, this is the greatest guitar tone ever captured -- in any country, on any world, in any solar system, in any galaxy.
For those that don't know, they re-recorded the album 'Burn my eyes' in the studio in 2019 and it's on spotify. So good.
The Blackening is brutal. Aesthetics Of Hate is an absolute banger.
That little headbang at the end during the final breakdown and the smile it caused warmed my cold metal heart.
At 6:35, when Judson starts headbanging at the breakdown, the nod and smile of approval is amazing
In my opinion Burn my eyes is the best metal debut album ever created.
Well, from the 90s maybe, to that I agree but I'd rate a lot of stuff from before higher.
For me, Burn My Eyes was the perfect debut album - not a single bad song on there, in my humble opinion (I was 15 at the time though, lol)
It’s definitely in the top 3-4 for sure!
If it’s not, it’s definitely one of them.
Glad they finally surpassed it on The Blackening.
100% agree
No mention of the amazing riff at the end... soooo goooood.
"A Thousand Lies" and "Real Eyes, Realize, Real Lies" are my favorite songs from this album
Infectious
groove
Chris Kontos killing those drums!
Mi banda favorita. Los he ido a ver las tres veces que han venido a Chile. Saludos!
Great reaction! Hopefully you'll do something from Machine Head's album the Blackening too.. maybe Clenching the Fists of Dissent or A Farewell to Arms
I agree! The Blackening is regarded as one of the best metal albums period!
Banger! 🤟
Still love this Album after all those years! Remember MH's great shows, supporting Slayer on their first european Tour back in '94 and at Dynamo Open Air '95!!!
Love older machine head
In my mind, this is their best song. Whatever gets you going, this song does.
Great track to start with. I’d also suggest:
“Imperium”
“I Am Hell”
“Clenching the Fists of Dissent”
“Sail into the Black”
“Old”
Clouds Over California by Devildriver 😁🤘
I can't even describe how much this album meant to me at the time, and still nowadays. Amazing debut.
Still my fave album from them to this day. Also that t-shirt love it my fave DEATH album.
More Machine Head! I think that Unto the Locust is a more easy to digest album for someone new to Machine Head.
Fantastic song! Cant belive it's from 94... damn I feel old haha
Electric Wizard PLEASE
One of the real old school metal bands
Burn My Eyes top 3 metal albums at 90's🤘
Judson's face at 6:36 😂
It's the ultimate stank face riff.
Nice, finally! Now show em Devildriver for some more groove metal.
First! Let freedom ring!
Totally with Richard on Halo, one of the best tracks from probably my favourite Machine Head album. I'd LOVE to hear Judson's reaction to the dueling solos from Clenching the Fists of Dissent. About the vocals, he learned to sing for this album, they didn't have a singer so he just went for it, Max Cavalera teached him.
...and it shows because vocally that's the blind leading the blind...
...tone deaf for days...
@@DericAnslum Um, Ok. Hot take. Lol Nonetheless both vocalists sounded great.
You should do Game Over of Machine Head! This is the real musical range of machine head!!
The album that shone through as Metal in a New metal Era
Man, I loved this album back in my early teen years. I even learned to play this song on guitar.

Hell Yeah
One of the best debuts of all time.

"LET FREEDOM RING WITH A SHOTGUN BLAST"
I love that.

Lazarus ad for more groove metal🔥🔥🔥
Give Judson some My Dying Bride, pretty interesting how he will perceive piano+violin+ death doom metal combo : )

Whenever I hear Machine Head I think of Ten Ton Hammer, I also think of the Roadrunner United album, song called The Dagger!
Had this came out 2 years before they’d be as big as Pantera, Korn, Rage
React to Peste Noire - Javas reve du nord
Cool black metal with violin and creativity
Introducing metal music to your non-metal friends is the wish of every metalhead on the planet :D
machine head are still one of the best bands around . darkness within track would be a good choice too
Machinehead is a song by Bush from the Album Sixteen Stone of 1994
The Swedish band Count Raven released a song on the subject even before this, in November '93.
I don't wanna make it about White Zombie either but Thunder Kiss '65 and Soul Crusher of La Sexorcisto Devil Music Volume One (1992) are great songs.
Machine Head has some very hit and miss albums, but Burn My Eyes is probably one of their best
Igorrr - Himalaya Massive Ritual 👹
Masterpiece
Shout out to you gentlemen - would love to see your take on Parkway Drive - Karma 🇦🇺🤘Keep it up lads

Yes, this is a great time to return to Sepultura! Or maybe something from Adrenaline album by Deftones.
👿👿😈.. Sounds like a early Prong mixed with some Pantera..I can deff hear go home boy lyrics in there
Next react Epica - Kingdom of heaven part 1 (omega alive show)
Do some sludge like Crowbar, High on Fire, Down etc
Please show him "Solitaire Unraveling" by Mushroomhead. I wonder what he'd think of the dual vocalists and the music that makes you get up and move!
This is a great idea
Machine head darkness within pls. I think judson would like that one ☺️

I'd be curious to see him listen to both versions of Darkness Within.
If y’all haven’t done any progressive metal consider listening to This is the end by Prototype. Awesome song!
Him and his bass player Friday night live is was it was called during Covid

Do Volitale by Machinehead. That's metal.
You should do "Darkness Within" from Machine Head's Unto the Locust Album. I think it would have a lot of meaning to you.
Also, the first track off of their Of Kingdom and Crown album would change your mind about their vocal capability.
What about some Prong for more Groove metal? Fear Factory and Black Label Society, even Obituary with some death influence

Personally this isn't where I would have gone with Machine Head. Their music is much better after their nu metal era. Imperium, Halo,
Never understood the fuzz with album… I think it’s too “groove” for my taste.
But I’ll take Vio-lence any day of week.
