I discovered her a few years ago and immediately remembered hearing ''Africa'' years and years ago on the radio. Even though I like the French language, I‘d recommend to you to check out the English version wich slaps haha even more!
Make sure to check out her songs ''American Love'' & ''Night Sky'' also, wich are both superb! Her voice reminds me of Annie Lennox sometimes but she‘s one of a kind, gone to soon.. Rest in Peace 🌹

That was a smashing hit but the reason there was no real chart position is that an official charts for music was created only in 1984 with the birt of a very popular show called TOP 50 whichwas broadcasted every satuday night it listed the 50 best seeling records of the time. Before this date we hadn't no real chart but with more than a 1000000 millions sold we can easily imagine she could have been n° 1 . The song was really pouplar on radios as well. But she was more or less a one hit wonder because of the huge success this song had it was difficult to do something bigger after... RIP

Hi Dereck! Thanks for your react on Rose Laurens but AGAIN it isn't the original music video! Yet it does exist!
This song Africa is a "classic" in France and released in October 1982 taken from her first album Déraisonnable as a first single. It will be ranked no.1 and and will sell more than a million copies certified Platinum disc!Do you know that this song was born out of an argument between Rose Laurens and her companion?
In the middle of a working session, he writes a dancing melody but does not want to give it to him because he wants a fairly serious first album.
Rose insists because she finds this very energetic music that pleases her and finally he accepts.
There is an English version called Africa (Vodoo master) released in March 1983, which will rank No. 3 in Germany and No. 1 in Austria, No. 2 in Switzerland and Norway.
This song will be covered many times in particular in Germany sung in the language of Goethe entitled simply "Afrika".
Whether in English or French version, each also has its long version. You can find them on Spotify. For the English version, it's the same music video as in France.
As you say, at the time in France, there was no official classification yet, that's normal. It was not until November 1984 that there was the TOP 50, the only official ranking of singles sales in France (45 RPM, Maxi 45 RPM, 2-track CD, Maxi CD) and also albums (Top Albums) initiated by the SNEP. It has become a real institution thanks to the weekly television program on Canal + (first encrypted channel in France from November 1984) from 1984 tp 1993.
For your NEXT REACT you can do it or her second single, her "follow up" entitled "Mamy Yoko" taken from her second album (wich exists in English version too) with Japanese vibes!
Unfortunately Rose Laurens passed away on April 29, 2018 following cancer.
Thanks for your great work our Frenchie American dude. 👍🇫🇷

This song is a level above the previous one. It's a song where the lyrics of the chorus really stick in the head.
Like "On va s'aimer" for example, this is the type of song whose chorus is repeated in a loop at the end of the song. Like it or not, the lyrics are embedded after you hear the song.
If you like this type of voice then, you have to react to "Mamy Blue" (1970) by Nicoletta. ua-cam.com/video/LD2uHFT2bI4/v-deo.html A French song which like "Comme d'Habitude" (1967 Claude François - the song covered in English under the title "My Way") toured the world and was sung in French or English by the greatest singers of the time: Céline Dion, Julio Iglesias, Vicky Leandros, Joe Cocker, Pop- Tops, Roger Whittaker, The Golden Gate Quartet, and even in reggae version by The Cimarons.
On the other hand, knowing about your grandmother, I think this song could very quickly make a tear roll down your cheek. It's better to know that beforehand.
Afterward, you'll be able to discover "Idées Noires" (1980) where she gives the answer to Bernard Lavilliers. ua-cam.com/video/VXwGh8RpPiU/v-deo.html
