;) Best regards to France ///
Wow thank‘s for reacting to this! I discovered her a few years ago and immediately remembered hearing ''Africa'' years and years ago on the radio. Even though I like the French language, I‘d recommend to you to check out the English version wich slaps haha even more! Make sure to check out her songs ''American Love'' & ''Night Sky'' also, wich are both superb! Her voice reminds me of Annie Lennox sometimes but she‘s one of a kind, gone to soon.. Rest in Peace 🌹
Thank you Dereck ! Rose was such a great singer ! I can recommend you a French group from West Indies (2 fantastic sisters with beautiful voices), one of their songs : "Si la vie demande ça" (amazing). And or course France Gall, in another style, with "Dancing disco" ! Thanks for your interest for French artists 🙂
Dear derek, She was in charts radio . The first official chart start with top 50 in 1984. Before that, in France we classified artist by the sell album and radio . Take care and thanks for this one. When it's came out , i was 4 years old. So long ago. Thanks and keep trying french music .
That was a smashing hit but the reason there was no real chart position is that an official charts for music was created only in 1984 with the birt of a very popular show called TOP 50 whichwas broadcasted every satuday night it listed the 50 best seeling records of the time. Before this date we hadn't no real chart but with more than a 1000000 millions sold we can easily imagine she could have been n° 1 . The song was really pouplar on radios as well. But she was more or less a one hit wonder because of the huge success this song had it was difficult to do something bigger after... RIP
"Africa" is from 1982. The Top 50, the only official ranking of sales of singles in France, was initiated only in 1984, in particular thanks to the television program of the same name broadcast on Canal + the same year.
A hit song that I'm pretty sure was recommended by me and others to Dereck at the beginning when he started listening French songs. Have a special though for Rose Laurens. Rest in peace
this song is timeless! always fun to hear it and you get into it. The voice of rose laurens is magnificent. in the musical 'les miserables' she offers the best versions of the songs. For me she is the only fantine
hi dereck. to answer you the first top 50 was created in november 1984 and the first no1 besoin de rien envie de toi de peter and sloane (in front of steevie wonder i think) i confirm that she was in the radio charts and in the hits of the clubs
One of the most iconic French songs. An enormous success. Timeless. And another one-hit-wonder. Yes the mourners will say "what about Mamy Yoko?". But absolutely not comparable
Try her musical "heir" : fishbach "un autre que moi" Similarity is obvious One rare talented singer And about rose "Africa" well it's an 80's classic in France, huge hit!
This song is a level above the previous one. It's a song where the lyrics of the chorus really stick in the head. Like "On va s'aimer" for example, this is the type of song whose chorus is repeated in a loop at the end of the song. Like it or not, the lyrics are embedded after you hear the song. If you like this type of voice then, you have to react to "Mamy Blue" (1970) by Nicoletta. ua-cam.com/video/LD2uHFT2bI4/v-deo.html A French song which like "Comme d'Habitude" (1967 Claude François - the song covered in English under the title "My Way") toured the world and was sung in French or English by the greatest singers of the time: Céline Dion, Julio Iglesias, Vicky Leandros, Joe Cocker, Pop- Tops, Roger Whittaker, The Golden Gate Quartet, and even in reggae version by The Cimarons. On the other hand, knowing about your grandmother, I think this song could very quickly make a tear roll down your cheek. It's better to know that beforehand. Afterward, you'll be able to discover "Idées Noires" (1980) where she gives the answer to Bernard Lavilliers. ua-cam.com/video/VXwGh8RpPiU/v-deo.html
Next should be Quand tu pars written specifically for her by Francis Cabrel. He has rarely written for anyone else but himself. Like us here, he was a fan of her unique voice. Thank you Dereck, keep up the good work
Pour connaître les versions en anglais et en français. C'est sans parti pris que je trouve la version française plus percutante! Sans conteste ma préférée. To know the English and French versions. It is without bias that I find the French version more impactful! Definitely my favorite.
Hi Derek, very glad you liked this song. I am sure you will like an amazing singer from Belgium. Her name is Maurane. You might start with the song "toutes les mamas". Maurane very sadly passed away as well..

The official charts didn't exist yet in France in 1982. That's why there's no charts run for this song.
