- I had my surgery on Mar 24, 2015 for a herniated L5-S1 lumbar disc which caused intense sciatic pain in my left leg for over a year. Here's my experience so far. Check back for further updates.

Hi everyone. This is my old channel (can’t log in), and I haven’t checked my old vids/comments in a long time. I’m 6 years post-op. No regrets in doing the surgery, I just wish someone had told me the importance of stretching long ago...might have avoided the bulged disc. Anyway, I still have tightness in the lower back and of course heavy lifting/long periods of sitting are still sources of discomfort. Feet together, stretch and toe touches are my go-to relief. Avoid the sitting. Good luck.
Hey before surgery did you try physical therapy?
Congratulations! How do you manage the pain when you have to sit for long periods of time?
What's your new channel?
I'm so happy for you, Brody. I'm glad that you are on the road to recovery. You are one of the most talented individuals I've ever seen. Can't wait to see you live again.
Hey Brody. I had no idea. I'm so glad you're feeling better and yes please do keep us updated.
I just found out I have a L5 s1 disc bulge to the left. I have back pain when I sit but no leg pain. Do u have a disc bulge/ back pain or only leg pain. Also I only hurt when I sit not when I'm trying to sleep. Did you heal up completely? If so how long did it take and what did u do to heal ? Please help 😊🙃 also my back used to get tight when I lay down for bed but since I started back exercises 4 weeks ago. It doesn't get tight when I lay down only when I drive or sit. Are u 100% healed or do u still have back pain? Did u get surgery? Are you having any complications after surgery?
Isn't it remarkable the surgery they do today that would have put you in a hospital for a week or more in the past, and now you're out in the same day. Congrads on the outcome so far. I had an artificial disc replacement almost 2 years ago in my neck (C4-C5), replacing a herniated disc that I put off for almost 2 years after a bad car accident, that almost took all my feeling in my left arm/hand and a good deal of the feeling in the right hand. I walked out the same day of the surgery. Today virtually all the feeling has come back (except numbness in the left pinky and a little numbness in the finger next to it), as well as head movement that I had before the accident. The only thing I regret is not having done it sooner.
Omg this is exactly what I’m going through for 9months of pain. Its been 10days after the epidural injection I feel like the pain is even worse. I need this surgery. TFS
I really appreciate the video Brody. I've had terrible back pain and problems in my L5S1 for 2 years, or a little over, now. I have had MAAANY sessions with other forms of treatments, but I am sort at the proverbial end of the road now. I am definitely going to contact a local Dr. and get the ball rolling in this direction. I appreciated the humor in this video as well :) Blessings!

@@freestylebully4849 So, about 10 years into it now; I have a "protruding disc" in the L5S1 and the pain runs through my entire spine from top to bottom and down my legs a little bit. And for me generally everything hurts :( So, I was told by several doctors in my journey that I'm simply too young for the surgery (I'm 37 now, so I was prob 30ish when I was looking into it) and so I've had no surgery. Although, I've had the RFA which is where they burn some of the nerves out around the affected disc. But, it didn't help me. HOWEVER, I'm so glad to say that I recently came across some medical stuff that has actually started legitimately helping me for the first time in all these years! I could say a lot about it but basically the work and teaching of Dr. John Sarno, Dr. Howard Schubiner, and a guy on UA-cam called "Pain Free You" Dan Buglio; there material has caused my pain to decrease dramatically and it's only continually getting better, and that's after a few months of jumping into their stuff. I can't recommend what they do highly enough. As a matter of fact, I know that some celebrities have recovered from back pain issues b/c of them. I don't remember all of them but I know that Howard Stern is one of them. Really hope this helps!!! Many Blessings!
@@freestylebully4849 Also, does "Freestyle Bully" mean that you rap/spit?
Thanks Mr. Brody. Your vid certainly helps. After an MRI, I have lower back L4S1 disc bulge and considering surgery. No pain right now but I walk with a noticeable limp in my left leg.
Hopefully you got treatment. I have the same two as you had. I'm in the process of going to get a consultation. It started as a limp. Now it's a limp with pain and what feels like electric shocks.
God bless you brother I'll be praying for you keep on making great music you are talented
Hi brody, first of all thank you very much for this video log - second... as I and many others must find frustrating... please dont be one of the many on youtube that make 1 or 2 vlogs and are never seen again... for me that is the most frustrating part of trying to find real information on l5s1 discectomys
Thank you for the good news.
Thank you for posting this!
Brody, I just found your videos. I had three lumbar surgeries like yours within a period of 3 years. That was 15 years ago and I am doing fine now. I've learned what aggravates it and avoid those activities, By the way, you are a great singer! More please.
Hi Bruce. Hope you are still active here and see my comment.
Your comment just shook my head. Like 3 surgeries why 3 surgeries? Want your microdiscectomy a success?
I wanna talk you in detail it might help.me with my condition. Hope you dont mind

I hope you are continuing to heal.. I'm now facing surgery number 7, and the 4th fusion.. l2 thru s1.. the past five years have been he'll, though I try hard to still be a good Dad, husband and company CEO. On the positive side, my core is rock strong after many rounds of pt. Despite much pain, it could be worse and I too feel that I'm a blessed man. Hopefully no. 7.. another fusion, will go well. If anyone is willing--say a prayer for me; I will do the same for you Brody!! Very best, Frank William Bruno
i hope ur doing better! im 17 and just had a microdisectomy yesterday
@@shockminerx1518 How are you today? Hope your feeling better! Had mine 6 days ago!
Hi Frank hope you are fine. I will be so happy of her your response and your response may help me.

Well wanna know how are you now in 2017?
An yeah why you had 7 procedures? And yeah when you 1st got hurt and at what age?
@TheSmackofDeath Hi, yes I started to walk 2 days post op. I'm 10 weeks today and about 90%!!! How are you?
@TheSmackofDeath Honestly the first 2 weeks were the hardest. Give yourself time and be patient with your recovery. I still have some nerve damage that will take time to heal but nothing compared to pre op! Walking helped a ton for me, just don't overdo it and listen to your body.
wow ... I have the same story, same disc, just the right leg was sciatic for me. Thanks for sharing.
How was your recovery?
Hey Brody, my mom had a similar issue and I did some research on it, as I'm sure you've done for yourself. Once the sciatic nerve is freed from the pinch, blood flow will nourish and restore you to full function. After your recovery, regular exercise and stretches will help. Thanks for posting and best wishes in your recovery.
How are you feeling now? I'm on my couch since June 2, going for surgery the 10th, and I agree w you, this pain is the worst e ever, can't wait
Wow I'm so scared to move and you're here walking and squatting! I just had mine same location this morning at 9:00. I guess I'll do more and more each day!
Yep just had my surgery. That pain is a real eye opener. Fantastic now .
@@christian6388 it’s been about 7weeks. 2 weeks ago I had pins and needles in my right leg. But that’s normal. Decided to get back to swimming and infected the wound so had to go on antibiotics that’s cleared up ok. The nurse put the wind up me a little as I went back to bike racing after 3 weeks and rode a motorcycle to the post surgery interview, she was not impressed. It’s the fall not the action, she said. So I stopped doing any exercise and walk the dog.
She did remind me of that PAIN !
Another 2 weeks and I’ll start exercising again . For me it was a gradual build up over 12 months before it got really bad. I thought it was due to complications with a double hip replacement. I thought I’d be able to push through it…. But nope.
Over the last 5 years Ive had double Capel tunnel surgery, double hip replacement, colonoscopy x2, detached retina, blood clots lower legs, knee surgery x3. This was by far the best one for pain relief and coming out of anaesthetic. Zero pain and no after groggy feeling.
I hope this helps.
@@christian6388 he said fantastic.
Thank you for your story
Hey there Brody.. Frank here... I waa lifting cat litter boxes 8 years ago and blew out the disc at L4/5. Pain in my spine and right leg down to my knee.. my first 3 surgeries were all micro-discectomy pricedures.. apparently the surgeon who did those 3 took out too much structure. I went to another neurosurgeon in Denver and he said I needed a series of fusions to stabilize my spine. I am now fused 7 surgeries later from L1 to S1. That surgeon looked at my imaging and asked me:"what happened when you were a kid?" Well, I'd forgotten that I fell out of a 2nd story window when I was 2. So it is now November of 2020 and my 3rd surgeon is expecting T12/L1 to blow out very soon.. I'll keep you posted.. but prayers and blessings your way!!
Frank from Boulder, Colorado
Frank how are you feeling. Your injury sounds super devastating
Thank you for the video. Very helpful
Hey brody..... how you doing 5 years later. Just want to know about your health now.
Will also love to see your MRI.
Nice. Just had mine done yesterday and finally pain free after six excruciating months of pain.
Do u feel confident now ?
Please suggest..
I need to undergo surgery.
Feeling fear for that
@@manibabusagam7949 best thing I ever did. The pain is gone. Good luck
@GunCollector007 was your surgery done microscopicly with a lamenectomy or endoscopically? To my knowledge there is no need for a lamenectomy when the surgery is done endoscopically.

I had to have an emergency discectomy at the beginning of this week, I have already had surgery twice in the same place back in 2016/2017 at l5-s1. It got so bad this last time that even after the surgery i'm still suffering from numbness from my right butt cheek down to my right heel. I am starting to get the feeling back in my toes though. So that's a plus. But I hope your recovery went well and everything is good now. I know how debilitating this can be. I've been at war for 13 years with it and I'm only 29

Thank you Brody for posting this. Just wondering how you are doing today 5 years post-op?
I’m 5 days post op and I’m doing amazing.
I’m scheduled for surgery on my l5S1 Feb 11, this was very helpful!
How are you now bro ???
Can you explain exactly where and what your pain was like? Did you have any tingling in your legs below the knees etc.. calves etc.. I had L4-L5 Microdiscectomy 2 years ago and was told my L5-S1 looked bad as well but they wouldn't do both and I am still having issues and wondering if the L5-S1 is causing the trouble or if its something else.
Thank you man ,
I'm 10 weeks into my thing , I had a private MRI at 7weeks which revealed several! Disc bulges / herniations!
All the usual stuff going on ,pain on and off ,moving around , left buttock, left leg, then left/right shins.... oh man it's a bitch .
Thank you for this video which is very helpful ,reasuring and informative .
Iv just booked a consultation with a private neurosurgeon to have the talk !!
Thanks for keeping it clean, Brody. Appreciate the buttock reference. Extremely classy.
I'm going to have this surgery this next week. Been dealing with this since 2000 when I was 16 I fell off a second story balcony.
How is your recovery now?
Joseph Preite. How did it go???
@@techlink975 first one was great no big deal. Had surgery in March then 4 months later I was clearing my property and bent over and lifted a bush hog (400lbs) with the help of my brother and the next day severe pain. Herniated same disc again. One this time. So just had surgery AGAIN a month ago now and I'm pain free life is great. No more lifting for me or bending. But if you need this surgery don't hesitate it's no big deal. That's why I had the second one so quick. I wasn't scared for real
@@josephz9006 im going to have this surgery next month, i really appreciate that you respond so quick thank you so much i feel more confident now. God bless my brother.
@@josephz9006 do you mind referring your surgeon? I have been suffering since 2015 and was living on pain relief. I decided to solve it a year ago; took medication, went to PT and took the injection. It looks like the surgery is the only option for me
I had severe herniated disc on my l4 l5 since 2018 Im really scared pf surgery but i feel like i dont have any choice.
Thank you for posting Brody!! I will be having the same surgery in a week and have been somewhat nervous about it. I got injured at work in November and contiued to work until I could not stand the pain. I'm on disability now due to paralysis in my left leg :/. I'm just ready to get the ball rolling and am very much so ready to start healing thank you for sharing :)
Hi Sophia... Hope you are fine. Just wanna ask that how are you doing now?
I wish you have got your health back.
Hey well it’s been almost 4 years since surgery and the nerve damage is irreversible still don’t feel my toes on my left foot. But since then I lost about 40 pounds so it did help with the pain. I’ve gotten married and am now pregnant with my first baby. Having had the surgery and now pregnant has definitely proven difficult. The pain was pretty manageable up until the 3rd trimester now it’s just pretty painful and can’t do much for the pain. My son will be here any day now I’m looking forward to getting back to my old self. Overall I would say the first year -2years after surgery was the hardest for me trying to find that balance and strengthen my muscles and then being deemed permanently disabled was hard but now after doing all the hard work I’m glad that I did the surgery

Hello, I know this is an old post but I was wondering if you could reply. I am 10 days post op ( L5 S1 microdiscectomy). I am still having sciatic pain. It is much decreased. Maybe a 4 at the very worst. My nerve was pinched for only 7 weeks before surgery. Did you still have pain for a time after surgery? Did it ever heal completely? I'm a little concerned. Thank you and I hope you are well.
Hey did the pain ever go away ? I’m three days post op and am still feeling a slight sciatic pain as well .
What is your conditions now? Are you pain free now?
I’m getting this in 10 days I have 3 disc bulges but they only want to do one at a time, I’m only 21
how are you feeling now??
Having mine tomorrow
What kind of doctor did your surgery?
beneficial video as you value it in numbers (f)
Had it myself but just out of Surgrey you are loaded with meds. Mine also felt great until about 5 days after just about all of mine is back and also on the rt side
So much for regular updates huh?
+Pob 1 Not much to add. I'm 6 mos. post-op. All is good, provided that I stretch daily and keep the sitting to a minimum.
So basically you got beat up by a little girl! :) Sorry to hear about this, sounds terrible. Glad the surgery was good! Back issues are one of the worst things you can get...
Animo¡¡¡¡¡
I don't understand you just got out surgery, and can walk? Just did mine and i can't walk.
The best thing you can do after having this done is walk. After you come to, they make sure you get up and can go to the bathroom. Also, it’s important to move around to prevent blood clots.
I thought you was about to say hello everyone im wes borland
