Don't Buy The GoPro Hero 8 Vs The Hero 7...

- Which is better - the GoPro Hero 8 or the Hero 7? That's the biggest question that I'm getting asked right now and something I feel I can give a pretty solid opinion on for the normal consumer. Understanding that most people aren't going to be spending hours colour grading their videos, actually just want to capture something good and share it with their friends. This is how I looked at it for this video - enjoy!

Hey.. nice down to earth personality thanks! BUT I don't see a 4K option.. just 1080... wanted to let you know.
Paul you need to get the GoPro MAX! Check out the footage I got with my Scott Genius: ua-cam.com/video/0nQ09uyyv1c/v-deo.html
I am sure you fall off the bike a lot you should do a video with all the fails
Hi Paul. Can you tell me where most of the footage was filmed? I'm interesting in learning to mountain bike
I am still on the Hero 4. I would get a newer model but the old 4 just refuses to die. I have done everything I could to kill it short of putting it under a bulldozer, but it laughs at everything I do. When a little fella is that determined to live I can’t bring myself to break its little plastic heart by replacing it. I put my hands over its little silicon ears whenever these new generation GoPro’s are discussed - I don’t want to worry him, or make him feel inadequate and old fashioned.
Three cheers to all the Hero 4 users of the world! We are fewer than there was before, but we refuse to go away.
I bought mine a week before the 5 came out :( Still got it because it ain't broken!
skydave If you are waiting for it to break, then you will have a long time to wait :) the “4” generation was a keeper, and the number still around and regularly used is extraordinary.
All hail the 4 all hail the 4 😂
Mine still works great. I feel guilty buying a hero 7 since mine still works just fine
JacksMagicBean Unless there is something the 7 can do that the 4 can’t, and you need that thing, then it is just common sense to stay with your familiar old friend.
My protip. If you have GoPro models 3-6, get the 8. If you have the GoPro 7, keep the 7, dont buy the 8.
What if you have no GoPro?
@@canadianroot buy the 8
@@auomauom Damned expensive, especially where I live. Would the 7 be a viable alternative, or is the 8 that much better? How about the Osmo?
@@canadianroot Did you not just watch the video?
Ash I like to ask opinions of commenters as well as content creators. Does this bother you?
21:42 for the answer, not a big difference, Hero7 is good enough but if you care a bit more about color and stability, Hero8 is also good but lens is sealed. You're welcome. 22 minutes of life saved.
Go Pro is releasing a skin with replaceable lens. So the complaint about not having a replaceable lens like the 7 is kinda moot at this point

Thanks. Saved me 22 minutes.

I've not seen *every* single hero 8 review, but you are the first I've heard say the fixed lens cover is a good thing. Good point about moisture getting in.
Cheers Dave, just seems like their solution to that problem! I've been at the top waiting for people to fix this problem ya see :).
No issue with Gopro 4 Session I like the lens cover is replaceable, why not have reparable seals?
The bad thing with the lens is you can install a aftermarket lens on your own easy, unless you are good at that and want to waste your time with it, I am not fan of distortion, I want no distortion, My phone has distortion too, I hate it.
SO I want a proper camera, and a action camera with no distortion lens, So I think I should get the camera that offers this, but maybe there will be a aftermarket option for 8 too if peauproductions is gonna do it, I don't know yet, but for 7 they do. So far this has not happen yet. Why can't GoPro offer two lenses?
Yeah you can also just buy a protective case too, it will protect the touch screen as well! I want to use mine for underwater video so this is great for me! Salt water drying in there would not be pretty.
@@PaulThePunter i had a brand new hero7 on a tiny tripod (maybe 40cm) and the tripod fell over because i didnt check the balance. the hero7 hit the ground (some gravel on a hiking path) with the lens first. so after that there were tiny scratches on the lens cover that caused maaany problems with sunlight from the front or side. actually the rest of the footage of that 3 weeks vacation was "scratched" and it really really sucked. back at home i simply ordered a new lens cover and now its all great and "like new" again. since that experience i dont take my hero7 on a vacation without a spare lens cover, just in case. so now with the hero8 having a FIXED lens cover, in my opinion it s a real DISADVANTAGE.... and i dont see the point of buying a "protective case" for the hero8. that makes no sense to me...
sorry, just my opinion... :-)
Thank you and thank you a real down to earth review.
On the Hero 7, mine was randomly cutting off while recording but it seems to have been resolved with the latest firmware update (as of Jan 2020). Great video... thanks for making it!
Hmmm, I was wondering if i bought a gph7 or gph8 as of (april 2020) if it would still freeze alot like the ones bought half a year or more ago.
This was a great video, thanks for all the work and the share on this. A couple of catches - GoPro Plus is about $US4.25 a MONTH (not$50) , and it is 78Mega bits / 100 Mega bits per second, not Mega Bytes per second..
For buying your micro SD card, I believe specs are for the raster Read cycle, not the slower Write cycle. 78 Mbits/sec is ~ 10 MegaBytes per second. Adjust your buying specs for cards accordingly.
I am working on a more exciting life to justify either the 7 or the 8.
Wow! very impressed with the amount of effort in this video... Subscribed!
Thanks for posting Paul. Yeah, I'm going to stick with my 7 and go from the chest mount to the "chin mount". Maybe I'll buy the next version, the Hero9ish. For your sound comparison you should mount each one to the right and left sides of your helmet and hit some high speed runs with them both running at the same time.
Paul , this was a great helpful and informative video. Even though I am an editorial portrait and music photographer and watch videos from camera reviewers this video and Loam Rangers puts the camera in similar situations that I am interested in using for my little non work related adventures. Thanks!
Just got a mountain bike and the hero 8!! Pumped I came across this video! Perfect for what I need since I make functional fitness content on Instagram daily and on youtube twice a week! Thanks for this normal practical person review! Might do one myself in a month or so!
Great video covering many practical aspects as pertaining to MTN biking. I was using the Hero 4 Black for a while on my chin and thought it was great, but I wanted to upgrade to get better image and some stabilization. So far I've used it a few times and found that it improved in those areas, but I was nervous about losing the audio quality that the H4B was well know for. So far, so good, but I need some more time using it. I bought the protective housing ($50, but it was $25 , but now it makes it bigger than before. I don't like the difficulty of getting to the SD card and the door that can easily come off if you are not careful when changing the battery. The side loading battery is not bad, but the door gets blocked by the mounting clamp bolt so it adds more fumble time to changing the battery. If I have the protective housing on, then it is more work all around to change card/battery, but I'm a bit nervous about messing up the lens without a replaceable cover. I suppose $50/year for Plus insurance is not worth it if you keep the camera more than a year because the insurance and housing cost the same.
Hello Paul. I just had my Hero 7,. What setting would you recommend?
What the loam rangers video
Great Video Paul. I've been debating what to get. I think the 7 will be fine for my needs. I'm curious. can you give me what settings to use on the 7 for decent footage that i want to get of myself and my friends riding. Auto everything? and 30FPS? also if I want to do simple editing of slow-mo jumps etc. do I need to switch to 60fps? or 120? I think the 7 can do 120 right? Thanks keep up the good work!
Paul- thanks for this. Great overview.
Awesome Video Brotha 👍, thanks for the info!
That dude sent that jump on a hardtail? Badass!!!
That's how we used to do it! Anything you can do on an FS bike can be done on a HT.
Last time I checked only girls ride dual suspension bikes. #hardtailpedigree
Very informative Paul, thanks.
No probs!
Great "real user" review Paul. $5.00/mo (we know what you meant) for "GoPro Insurance" isn't worth it for most GoPro users who may use their GoPro's maybe 20X per year. Regarding dropped frames, mine came from a slow computer. A slower/older computer processing the H.265 footage just isn't "up to speed" during the editing process, at least, for me. I did a rebuild on a VERY LOW PRICED AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X (Has 12-cores, 24-threads) as a desktop processor (NOT a great option since I'm sure you use a Laptop for editing on the road), which I picked up for a mere $200 on Amazon, and I get NO dropped frames anymore!
As far as upgrading, if one has a Hero 6 and below and uses their GoPro for any Action Sport, I think the Hero 8 IS worth the 25% premium. Just know that for those that do, the H.265 codec in the higher frame rates using stabilization DOES need a good computer processor.
Don't forget to use proxy files in whatever Video Editor you use to help your computer as well with editing...DaVinci Resolve is FREE, so if one wants to save money...
May i ask if you have ideal settings for night footage?
Hi Paul I saw you in morzine and I tried to ride over to you but you had gone. I’m still in France and it’s a great place to ride. Keep going with your awesome videos.🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
Wow the first time I've ever been fast 😂Thanks Ewan, hope you're having a great time.
Hey Paul! I noticed you said Plus was $50 per month but it's actually $50 per YEAR! They have an optional monthly subscription that is $5 per month. Happy punting!
There are two different categories of buyers and their respective points of view. One school asks, is it that much better than my 7 to justify replacing it with the 8? The other school is, someone who has neither, or an even older GoPro, should they buy the 7 or the 8? It sounds like it is not really worth replacing a 7 with an 8 because its not that much better. Improvements are subtle. However, if you have an early model of GoPro and you are thinking about upgrading, then it would be worth investing the extra money to get the latest technology.
I was just watching this video for the comparison. I am now a fan. I love mountain biking. Where are you riding in this video?
Upgrading to 8 from 6 and under is a good idea. Upgrading from 7 to 8 is pointless IMO. Not enough upgrade to warrant another purchase. Will wait for 7 black to drop further in price and purchase another 7.
Agree. 7 silver for me on boxing Day sales
Wow Love your videos!! SUBSCRIBED!
14:46 - You can get 4k 60 FPS with hyper smooth stabilisation on Hero7, it just sometimes "bugs" and shows you can´t, but if you change it and then change it back you can use stabilisation at 60 FPS
Thanks for the review!!!
On the note of cloud storage for GoPro plus I think it's most useful for saving your favorite clip throughout the year just to add them all into one big video at the end of said year.
@5:50 you do know, that they will still charge you for the replacement? And it's not cheap
One thing to point out that not many videos have: if you have a karma grip and/or a karma drone, the hero 7 is the last camera to be compatible, they haven't released a harness for the hero 8 and it doesnt look like they will since the drone has been discontinued for over 2 years now unfortunately.
That was quite helpful. Is there any DIY chest mount of your's?keep up mate👊

That was actually a pretty good impression of whichever announcer was screaming at Danny Hart that one time.

Good vid whereabouts are you riding looks cool 🤟🏻
Awesome video - thank you!
The Danny Hart commentary was magic 🤣👍 I'm split between getting 7 or 8. Really can't decide!
Trust me, not having a removable lens cap is a dealbreaker. One decent scratch, (which is almost inevitable with the nature of mtb) will set u back the cost of an entire new GoPro (Unless u have GoPro plus). Whereas if u have a seven, it a simple cheap fix that doesn't include sending you unit away for review and having to wait for a new one. Besides, if you're really after super smooth footage, no amount of software stabilisation will compare to the results of gimbal such as the GoPro Karma grip which can be chest mounted.
@@jfmtb2373 I have an Evo SS gimbal but it's not waterproof. I just got a hero 8 black in black Friday deal that I couldn't turn down. I will need to look into protection options for lense now. Cheers mate 👊👍🍻

I'm still on the Hero4 with a gimbal, but if I where to upgrade to a non gimbal set up I'd probably go for the 8. From what I've seen the Supersmooth 2 is so much better. Also the colours better on the 8 I think. It shouldn't matter since I do colour grading in post, but it's almost so good you really might not need to on the 8.
Is that from my video? Seems like this is a pretty general comment :)
@@PaulThePunter Nah, that's the impression I've got from looking at a bunch of vids on the 8.

Where can i get the cover for gopro 3/4? cant find same as u have.
Good stuff, definitely appreciate a review from an actual action sports POV and not just a camera geek.
Recently got an 8 just based on price vs 7 and the 9.
Was price the biggest thing that made you choose the 8 vs the 9? and why not the 7? I'm in the same boat of trying to decide between the three

For someone who's not a vlogger, but, wants to capture some underwater footage and may not use same cam for a while, which GoPro would you recommend? Thanks for this video.
Hello, Can I connect the gopro 8 to my HD TV and watch the videos? If so how do I do that? I've never had a gopro before and I heard that the hero 8 doesn't have a HDMI port so I can play my videos on the TV. I'm buying it to video my 2 year old daughter and I know she will want to watch the video afterwards. Thank you for all the information!
Hey--- this video was great, looked really good. So a few questions for you--- 1. What camera are you using to record this vlog? It looks GREAT. Also... and super important-- what is your light set up in this situation? What kind of set up do you have? Thank you.
Love this review as I was thinking seriously about the Gopro8
What's your thoughts on the folding mounting brackets? Are they stable or is there a little flex? Is it something to worry about?
What sd card and how many gb are you using in your gopro hero 8 sir?
Hey man, I know you look for nice cinematic shots. I just came across ND filters for gopro? Have you ever used them for riding?
So two years on from this video I came down to choosing between a 7 or an 8 and watched your vid 3times. I decided on the 7 for the cost as they have such a great rep. I get the cheapest used price at a pawn shop. Pay for the 7 black only to find it was a silver. They have a black listed for sale but can't find it so I end up spending 60 more for an 8 black. Was still 75 cheaper than any on Gumtree or Facebook.
I have the Hero 7 (got it a while back as a gift from a friend), been thinking of upgrading but will pass on that now and wait for the 9.
Yup, I'm returning my GoPro 8 - it is jiggly at the mount (and as a mountain biker, this is unacceptable) and I just don't like the thought of not being able to replace the front lens. Cheers.
So what would you recommend for filming activities like this (snowboarding in my case)? 24fps or 30fps.
Thanks bro I am making a UA-cam fishing account and I was wondering what go pro I should get and you really help me so thanks stay safe
What tweaks did you do for the color grading to make it look so vibrant?
Ok I guess I knew the chin mount just needed to see if it was the same way I did
Hi Paul, new here. What Camera & Mic did you film this video with?
i already have a hero 4 and i would like your advise about either buying a gimbal for my hero 4 or go with a hero 7 or 8 without considering the price difference
Audio is worse on the 8 as the mic is on the front and the foam is stretched thin on the front. Maybe glue some more foam on the front over the mic? 🤷♂️
Pretty cool features and a great comparison. I feel like a fancy new GoPro might make my channel look more classy than it is. Cheers.
There ya go!👌
Great video and you're into is dead on... Giving a very basic perspective on this camera which is exactly what I needed to know.. You're some kinda mind reader lol kudos
I bought a HERO 6 last year and recently had a chance at the HERO8 bundle for $289. I think I'll buy a 7 and mount 2 on my bike. Thanks for the review.
I got the Hero 8 because I ride motorcycles and their is a very noticeable difference on high intensity vibrations on smoothness. The 8 is crystal clean while the 7 still shakes.
Dont really want to spend the extra for the 8 im just going to get the 7 and sell my evo ss gimbal and hero 4. Then mount the 7 to a full face.

I am color blind as well. I have the 7 and 8. Now I like the case thing. Since the 8 has a wiggle. So I bought a case for mine. I have not used my 7 yet but did a test by mounting the cameras and noticed the wiggle on the 8 but. You decide to each is own. Now how did you do you chin mount. ?

All the hero 8 footage looked like it needed color correction. Hero 7 was a bit over saturated but I thought it looked better for sure. With some processing, the 8 footage could be great but yeah, the man is color blind.

Hi Paul. Great video, like the analysis. Would be good if you did some unconventional mounts. I buy stuff from AliExpress (like chinese ebay), theres loads of weird and wonderful mounts on there. Would be cool to get some of these and experiment with different positions. Also, lots of people are buying the cheap chinese 4k go pro knock offs, could you do a side by side quick comparision of footage with one of these vs go pro 7/8? Cheers, Phil

What most don't mention about low frame rate is some can actually tell its 24 fps or 30 fps or 60, I can.
So I always shoot 60fps, but I am not a eye expert, but for me anything lower than 60 looks natural, I can see it's low frame rate and there are frames that are ''missing''. kind of like stop motion but not as extreme.
forgetting about the cameras, your mountain bike riding through forests looks more scary than when I'm doing 60 MPH on a motorcycle down a twisty UK national limit B road !
