    I can't believe it took me this long to figure this out . . . the key to jazz and jazzy chord progressions is legit the circle of 4ths, just move down it and add extensions, occasionally go out of key to get that dominant sound.

      @@PianoLessonwithWarren Playing good jazz to me is playing well enough that the audience isn't just being entertained, but they are also being edified. I really love the jazz ballads: Our Love Is Here To Stay, My Funny Valentine, On Dolphin Street, Song For My Father. Even though this secular songs, these are great songs. I know there's different kinds of jazz, but I really like the small Jazz Combo.

    I've known about and practiced with quartal voicings. But this is a whole knew wrinkle using an augmented interval as a root or to suggest a tonal center.

    Hello, first of all, thanks for all, you are the best teacher, and I have a recommendation if is it possible one day, you make us a tutorial for piano sounds. I explain myself, for example:
    how to play water on the piano? or how to play someone who walks, someone who sleeps, someone screaming, a wind sound example, etc. etc. Someone who cries and can we play these emotions on the piano?, etc ... so an emotion that corresponds to an agreement or a sentence or I do not know .. you maybe have an idea.
    the goal is to play something that makes sense and to tell a story in music... thank you very much

    What is the best way to learn more quartal voicings?

  • @bobfridge
    @bobfridge 5 років тому +1

    Hello Warren. I have decided to start learning gospel. I have 9 months of piano experience. What is your approach to transcribing Gospel music? How do you use it as a learning tool? (I have a pretty good theory foundation btw and I've been doing interval ear training)

    • @PianoLessonwithWarren
      @PianoLessonwithWarren  5 років тому

      If you’ve been only playing it 9 months then there’s quite a bit more ground work needed to enable you to do effective transcription. Do you have the free beginner’s practice template?

    • @bobfridge
      @bobfridge 5 років тому

      @@PianoLessonwithWarren Yes I do. I am competent with my major scales,pentatonic and minor scales. I know my 7th chords and inversions well . I have been working on my blues scales and major 2 5 1 progressions. Also basic interval recognition. What do you recommend I do in terms of learning Gospel songs?
      The song learning part is what I really struggle with. I notice that that isn't something that is very detailed in the template. I find it weird that I am able to wrap my head around the theory and technique but still struggle with transcribing and learning songs. I wan't to know how I should work on a song/transcription throughout the course of a week.(Provided that I have about 2-3 hours to practice daily)

    • @PianoLessonwithWarren
      @PianoLessonwithWarren  5 років тому

      Bob Fridge are you transferring from another instrument like guitar? Or this you learn all that in 9 months?
      So with learning gospel songs the best way to start is to learn from a teacher (like myself). This will help you to learn the chords and to see and hear the patterns. From there you can then branch out and start to learn songs by your self through transcription.
      To start by your self with transcription will be a long and tedious process. In my member program over at pianolessonwithwarren.com/all-courses/ I offer song breakdowns and you also get to submit request for songs

    • @bobfridge
      @bobfridge 5 років тому +1

      @@PianoLessonwithWarren I used to study a ton of music theory for about 2-3 months prior to starting piano. and I had a very strategic and consistent practice routine. Thank you for the advise. I will start using your breakdowns as a guide
