    I am studying this video for two hours straight... It has a lot of interesting voicings and many other stuff... And what made me come here is transcribing "Stairway to heaven". They make this movement right in the beginning of the song, when they use D major as a passing chord to get from C to Fmaj7. The song is in Am. I am so glad to discovered this and you helped me understand the concept even better! Thank you! Greetings from Serbia

    Question for ya, please. For the chord of Cmaj, I go down two steps in the C major diatonic scale and get A. So, therefore, Amaj is a chromatic mediant chord to Cmaj. How then does Ab get to become also a chromatic mediant chord? Same idea with going up two steps to E makes the chord of E but also Eb. How does that work? What is the 'rule' there? PS, thanks and so glad I ran across this video. I've been studying modulations in general and have spent a good bit of time on specifically the Chromatic Mediant modulation. I am still struggling and waiting for that light bulb to come on. Thanks again!!!

    • @PianoLessonwithWarren
      @PianoLessonwithWarren  2 роки тому +1

      These are the criteria for chromatic mediant
      1. Both root chords are separated either by a major third or minor third.
      2. Both chords shares at lease one chord tone.

      Vico Re thanks for watching, and yes I’m very much aware of Debussy’s and Ravel’s technical period - I sometimes miss things while on camera. Never the less, the technique is employed extensively in their music.

      @@PianoLessonwithWarren Hey, you've inspired me to go back and review my music history for mediant modulations. I'm pretty sure Wagner used them, and Dvorak, too. Maybe Mahler? Also, in more contemporary context, isn't the beginning progression in Yesterday by the Beatles considered a mediant? Also I think Creep by radiohead?

    • @PianoLessonwithWarren
      @PianoLessonwithWarren  5 років тому +1

      Vico Re yes, yes, and yes, 😊 your music history is definitely on point. The chromatic mediant I believe really started in late classical era, even probably with Mozart (I’d need to review that) but definitely with Beethoven.
      Then the romantic guys ran with extensively, most definitely can be heard all over Wagner’s symphonic works.
      Beetles and Radiohead also used it - Radiohead pulled a lot of inspiration for “classical” pieces.

    Hm, film composer Junkie XL enlisted examples of going Em → E and Em → Ebm as using mediant relations.
    And I wanted to ask what does term non-diatonic chords in this lesson, or maybe there's a lesson about that too? Quick search lead me to chromatic/diatonic scales, but that's probably a bit different topic.

      I know this response is really late and you may have already figured it out... but the Eb and Bb are a 5th relationship. I don't think Warren was trying to imply that the chords he played were a chain of Chromatic Mediants, but two chromatic mediant pairs. Hope that helps.
