This is an awesome video! As others has stated it is a pleasure to see a professional that knows what they are doing. This country needs more experienced tradesman in all fields of work. This service industry mentality is killing us. Thanks for the great job and hard work!
2007 explorer rebuilt first transmission at 120, was fine till about 180 but out of warranty and went out again, I just replaced with with one from the junk yard, that one got me to 250 and then I junked it, it was a good day watching it go
This was a fantastic video, thank you. The high level of experience in tearing these down is amazing. Intimate knowledge of every part, what to look for, how to disassemble it, wow! This was like watching a medical surgeon. My 2005 Explorer 4.6L is having trouble, if you get on it hard, it will growl and sounds like metal on metal, put in N and turn off key, for 8sec, restart, and it's okay again. Also coming to full stop, off key, wait 8-10 sec, restart, and okay again. Checked fluid it's very dark and is now topped off.
That was amazing to watch! your skill and knowledge is to be admired. The final conclusion I took from this is that this Ford 5R55S is a piece of junk, poorly engineered. Unfortunately, I have this transmission in my 2007 Mustang GT. It has yet to give me any issues with 128,000 miles on the car, but at least I know what to do and what to tell the Transmission repair guys to look at if I do have problems with it. Thanks for this amazing video and your time.
Sir you are talented and experienced. I wish you lived near me. My 2006 explorer has the same issue, but I don't have anyone i can trust to work on it. Nice video.
I wish you were my neighbor! Ron-- Great video from a real professional! I am a late Saturday afternoon shadetree/carport mechanic and this rebuild is far beyond my mechanical gifts. Thanks for the video. I will stick with painting my flower planter and leave the tranny to a professional like you....
@@mikejohnson9118 it's just a 2005, v6 convertible. It had a broken reverse band and broken sprag in the reverse drum. I replaced both. I had to get some help on adjusting the shif cable, as the neutral safety switch kept engaging while in reverse. But I'm in good shape now. Nothing moded on it. just a fun car to cruise around in on nice days with the top down.
This was an amazing video. Just what I needed to see. I'm not getting ready to attempt my transmission with reverse issues but will use this informative video. Thanks
Awesome, I bet he cold do it in the dark or in his sleep, that's a master at work, I think what encourages him the most is the back ground music, Metallica on a loop YEAAAAaa, I am about to do a 5R55 in a 2004 explorer , hope it goes as easy as he makes it look, have not done a trany for 20 years, its going to be fun
Great video I actually followed what you doing. I've not overhauled a 5R55 yet and I work in a dealership. It looks like you have built many of these units. I am doing my first one the overdrive sprag was locked up and smoked the clutch pack. I may do a few more on the side if I can find a good parts source. I can knock a 6F or a 10R out in record time though.
My man, you look like you have done this before :-). Thanks, I was going to buy an Aussie made Ford Falcon with one of these POS's but now you have talked me out of it!
great design, my girlfriend has this transsmission in her LS. I love the fact there is no dipstick. So you can drive and wait for a huge mechanical failure. BMW did this to but with the engine oil. Great money maker there. They had great engineers.
now let's see you put it back together with all the new parts or whatever you have to replace. That was great video I can take it apart very easily but putting them back together that's the tricky part
I think there is a dip stick upgrade for the pan, alot of mustang guys put it in and run extra cooler systems to extend the life. But also because the 4.6 is such a heat soaked system.
Great video, Have you ever seen a servo snap ring start to come out of the groove? My explorer developed an ATF leak and I notice the snap ring was almost half way out of the groove on the large bore. I need to get a better look, but it looks like the groove is intact. I am not sure if I can just push the cap back in and reseat/replace the snap ring or if it is a sign of a much bigger problem. My servo bores were repaired about 200.000 miles ago. The transmission was working fine until the fluid leaked out.
The servo cover or whatever it's called popped almost all the way out on my brother's ranger! Thats why i found this video I'm hoping i can just tap it back in and the trans will be fine, what did you do about your issue?
@@heavymetalredneck7973 I tried to reinstall the cover, but it did not work. When I started the Explorer it shot out and dumped all of the fluid very quickly. The snap ring groove was damaged. If yours is out, it almost has to have a damaged groove. There is almost no other way for the snap ring to come out.. I asked my same question in another UA-cam comment section and I was told that there is a pressure release valve behind the torque convertor that can go bad and cause this issue. I replaced the transmission because it had a lot of miles on it and the transmission had to come out anyway. I can't remember exactly what the valve was called and I couldn't find the video that I got that answer from, but the channel is Automatic Transmission.
Excellent video. I'm in Louisville Kentucky are you close? I have a 2003 explorer 4.6. p0733 code. Slips in third. No other problems. Thanks for your time.
I just picked up a 4.0 mustang with this trans, got a deal because reverse was out. I knew it had to be the servo and I was right it owukd go into reverse but just barely roll...however it's clear he was driving on it for quite a while like that. First time I put it in reverse to see what it did I could hear metal on metal squealing then something grabbed hard and broke, no reverse engagement at all. Yay. I'm sure the band anchor gave up the goat or worse. So I just ordered a used trans. I'll throw new pistons in it and clean everything up before I put it in because I know it'll be dropping gears like flies.
Hiw do you put the rocker on spring back in? Silly me didn't realize the park had something behind that plate. Still learning transmission. But this one is one easy one for sure!
I have a question I have a M5A1 TRANSMISSION ON A 1994 FORD RANGER That I'm replacing the slave cylinder and the plate behind it I took off to replace the seals and when I took it off the seal fall off and I dont witch way it goes back in can you help me out it's to top seal that goes around the part that goes into the clutch do you have a number I can call you and send a picture of it so you know what I'm talking about? thx!!
Nice Video .... The flow control valve in the front pump on a 2007 explorer if its bad can it cause slipping in drive and reverse at any time ( intermittant) and then resume normal transmission operation again. ? Thanks
If you have a slip issue its usually reverse 1st then forward? Mine for two weeks was 1st gear, then the aecond week second gear. Pulled a P1700 code! Intermediate!?!

True craftsmanship
make numbered squares on a table in descending order, load the first thing in the last position and so on.

first class work

Wow Rick, your a master at your craft. The new generation has no skills like this!
That's a professional at his best!👍
Now this guy you can call him a professional. God bless you my hero

🤔I have learned 3 things here. #1 respect a transmission tech. #2 pay the $ cost to have this work done. #3 let them do it. TY SIR 😎
Job well done. Retired Master, just blew reverse in 05. I will send it to you LOL.
Dude, talk about an efficient mechanic. PIMP status
These Transmissions are filled for life at least that is what Ford has in the Service Info. LOL
if by 'life' they mean 115k then yea...... 🤬
Yeah. Life of transmission.
This guy is working really fast ,pulling all those gears out of the trans ,dam i through he was going to pull a baby out of that thing 😁
Gotta love planned obsolescence. 1995 and older is all I will buy.

Wizard!🐎🐎🐎
Where is the reverse switch? I've got a problem with the reverse lights staying on and draining the battery.
Good God man you’re good, hahahaha , I can take a toaster apart... does that put us on the level?
This is what I am doing today. That band is not typically the primary Issue. Its the slam engagement that causes the wear.

Hi. I was hoping you could clarify something. Do the 5r55 and the 5r55s use the same housing? As in can I switch all the interiors from one to to the other if one housing is cracked. Thanks in advance.
Imagine doing that with no air or power tools. 😮
Are they gonna make any more videos

Were is the shop located at? I need to buy that transmission, but for a 07 Ford explorer
Hey. The Explorer and the Mustangs come with this Housing...What is the Difference in the Torque Converter?
He moves to fast to be practical. But he knows his stuff for sure
is the 5r55 s the same in most all years. like 04 to 2010? 4x4 4.0 sohc (4L2P-7000-AB) and (7L2P-7000-DB)
