Hi i hope u see this message.I failed on hill start yesterdy.I gve gas then took foot of clutch but gve to much gas n wheels spinned.Didnt roll back no1 was there was clear but failed.
After watching this video MANY times, and taking my test today with lots of hill starts, I passed first time!! Thank you very much for posting this and your other videos. They've been a great help. 😀
Despite driving for over 30 years, I've recently become terrified of driving on inclines with traffic behind me. I always think I'm going to roll back into the car behind. Because of my fear, I tend to rev the throttle really fast (if that makes sense?) to make sure that I have enough momentum when it's time to move off. This fear is making some of the driving I do very, very stressful.
***** Hi, thanks very much for replying. I was thinking about going on a refresher course, as apart from inclines, I've got other fears about driving also. Probably life issues maybe sparking it. Love to have you as an instructor, as your voice is so soothing. :)
11monkeynuts I never use the handbrake technique. Starting on any incline you going experience some rollback. Key here is not panic but quickly ease up on the clutch and simultaneously step on the accelerator pedal. This will cause minimal roll back but it takes practice.
Do you know what... that was the simplest way of explaining it I have ever heard. I really struggle with stalling the car when doing a hill start so I hope this is going to help me. I have a driving lesson today so will be giving this a go. Thanks!
I thought i was so confident on hills, would rarely roll back (one month driving stick) Until i met a monster hill that was almost twice as steep as this hill. It put me in my place as i rolled backwards quite a bit. I needed above 3000rpms to slip the clutch and get moving.
+Hempflakes just learning how to drive manual, started yesterday, drove for about 45 mins and stalled once! but after reading this, i'm worried now lol
my dad has been driving a 1998 honda civic and recently about 6 months just got a Subaru brz manual and hit a car because it was uphill and his old car would never roll back unlike the brz
This was fab, thanks! I took a break from lessons because of work but once I started them again, my hills starts were appalling. This video is so straight forward and now seems like common sense to a learned driver!
NO LIE because of you I passed my drivers test the hill part was the scariest thing for me but after watching this and applying your method it worked thanks again
+sirpizo555 agreed, my road is quite tight and pulling in my petrol car on a hill in a tight road im not ready for lol. I either stall or go too fast :(
Chris, you first started teaching me about 5 years ago and I was a pain in the arse as I wasn't committed, then did another short stint a year or so later and gave up again. I was bought some lessons for Xmas (sorry they weren't with you!) and I passed my test on Monday, you gave me a good fundamental start and after watching the mock test with Jo, the night before, it really helped. The videos are very well produced and I hope that the channel does well for you, as it is all perfect, clear and useful information! Thanks!
This is by far the easiest way to explain how you're doing it. I'm due for a Driving Test on 20 December 2020. My driving instructor has a way more complicated way of doing it; after he Pressed the Clutch to change gear from Neutral to First, he then releases the Clutch Up to the Biting Point. Followed by pressing the Gas/Petrol Pedal to rev it up to between 1 and 2. Once you feel the car dip it when you release the handbrake. Yours seems way easier which is to just hold the Clutch once the Gear is changed to First. Then pressing the Gas/Petrol revving it up between 1-2 until you feel the car dip then releasing the hand brake. A HUGE THANK YOU!!! I'm going to try your version out today.
This channels content is very helpful, I watched a variety of this instructors videos to help me with my driving. I'm pleased to say I passed first time with only 1 minor! I still keep watching these videos as it's always good to revise even after passing. His voice is very calm and encouraging. Thanks so much.
Thanks! Good and short info! I bought my first car. Moving uphill I got my car installed at a lonely place. I watched this and was successful on third time. Pedal brake method needs more practice and finer control of brake and accelator, this is best for beginners.
I've learned at driving school that I should press down the brake pedal and the clutch (and shift to the first gear, clearly) and then release the hand brake. After that will I release the clutch (gently while still holding the brake pedal down). Just when I reach the biting point will I be able to release the brake pedal and gently step on the gas. And that would avoid a rolling back. Taking into account it should be a gentle step on the gas pedal in order to avoid a screech as well. =D
+Rafael Santos When you go driving on the streets it's only necessary if you can't let your car roll backwards, normally you can just release the brake, step on the gas and then release the clutch, hold the car using the clutch and the gas and then start moving. The car may roll a little, (it depends on how fast you do this sequence) but it's not enough to hit the car behind you. This is the fastest way to put the car moving but it requires some practice.
This makes so much sense now! Uphill starts always scare me because of rolling back but first time up hill I stalled multiple times as it’s confusing whether to use the handbrake or holding your foot on the clutch and brake.
it's easy .... if you aren't professional and u can't do it without handbrake do the following 1) press clutch2) put the first gear 3) press good amount of gasoline 4) release clutch slowly until you feel the car wants to start but the handbrake is not allowing to start ... in this moment release the handbrake
practicing while driving manual, I got into an incline stop as soon as I saw the green light I accelerated and released the clutch and lucky me I didn't stall the car. Big panic scared I was gonna roll back and hit the car behind me
3 years since passing my driving test w the help of your videos... but i had a gap of like 2 years of no car and haven't been driving as consistently now that i have one. my car feels much lighter than the diesel one my instructor had, and so i've been slowly relearning how to drive again with a petrol car and it feels harder! i'm beginning to drive a bit more smoothly but just the other day i was stopped at traffic lights and there was a very small incline so i put my handbrake on and then i tried releasing it to move a little forward while waiting and lifted up the clutch while giving gas and i couldn't do it and i rolled back 3 times! i started panicking and maybe i was doing it too fast but somehow, as soon as the traffic light turned green i managed to drive off and not roll back but omg the panic that set in whenever i rolled... i was screaming lol. i really hope i can nail this down because i had no issues with inclines at all in my driving instructors car. in that car i didn't even need to use gas to move off most of the time because the clutch power was so strong. i felt like driving was so fun while i was first learning and i still can't believe i managed to get good enough at it to pass my test first time but now it feels like i'm struggling. :(
@@worlddriving yes, i did start off doing that but there's not many hills around my town. i had driven to my old town that day. anyway i remember commenting on your video right when i passed cause your videos were so helpful to add onto my lessons and it definitely made me better at learning the skills so thank you!!
Starting learning how to drive manual today (drove auto for a year) and i can personally say that's and easy way to spin tires even in a dry condition :P definitely trying to improve though.
Something that can help not rolling back is letting the clutch get the the grabbing point, then flooring it and dumping the clutch. Or if you have a front wheel drive car with enough power you can engage the hand brake, floor it, then dump the clutch. You will feel the front tires spinning and see smoke, don't worry it's not from the engine. Then release the hand brake and you're off! Glad to be of help :)
Amazing tutorial, really helped me after I got myself an older car that didnt have all the supportive functions modern cars have, which I had to use to learn driving in the first place!
+World Driving I was wondering is it possible if you can teach how to drive an HR truck? This is because I want to get my HR's license incase I might need it in future.
Actually makes me feel confident about hill starts although I could never feel biting point when I had lessons. Maybe now the sleep apnoea is under control.
had my second driving lesson yesterday. I was entering a roundabout, from stationary, on an incline. This was my first attempt at a hill start. Needless to say, I stalled haha. but the cars behind me didn't beep, and my instructor didn't shout.
I just bought a car on the cheap as an incentive to get my driving lessons.. I wish I had kept my wheel and pedal for the PC so I could practice this. I know it sounds daft but in the past when I had them, I had a go in my mates car in a safe area and i felt really confident. now cos I sold them and havnt done anything driving related, I had a go rolling back and forth on the drive in mine and all confidence is shot lol.
Very difficult to find the 'biting point' in different cars besides the traffic and roads here in India makes it even difficult to hill start moving uphill. You should do a tutorial on how to do the same in traffic.
Im a lil bit nervous when we were stuck in traffic in a uphill road, then I'd used handbrake that i learned from your video "Clutch Control", I did it perfectly :) And uhh, it was accurate, yeah. Thank you Sir for uploading some videos :) I'm just 17y/o ✌😅 I really love driving a manual car than Automatic transmission💓
Great video. My instructor told me to release till the clutch hit the biting point, then hold it there, after that release the hand break and only after then should I press the gas. Gonna try hit the gas before releasing the hand break to see if it’s gonna get better.
Thanks Chris, my instructor told me to climb the slope while the car is motionless. With the handbrake and clutch and accelerator at check. This is a good guide to get the idea on how to move off while on a slope

If you're stopped in a heavy traffic in an uphill, it is very challenging. First is when driving uphill keep sufficient distance from the vehicle in front(ie you should see the front vehicles tire and the distance between your car front bumper to the tail bumper is 3 meters or so. Then, hold on the foot break and release the clutch (fairly fast) until you feel the gear engaged position/biting or locked position (the position the engine is moving) and then immediately release the foot break pedal and move the right foot to accelerate faster. As you accelerate release the left foot form clutch and let the vehicle move with acceleration control. (IN THIS VIDEO, at 0:48 second, THE INSTRUCTOR SHOWS TO PRESS THE CLUTCH WITHOUT THE FOOD BREAK PEDAL ENGAGED!!! IF YOU PRESS THE CLUTCH IN AN UP HILL, THE CAR WILL MOVE BACKWARDS!!! DO NOT PRESS DO THIS!!!) However in bumper to bumper traffic, it may not be so easy as it is said here. You need to practice, as the acceleration and torque will vary depending on the type of vehicle (and its mass) and how sensitive all the pedals are (how soon you can accelerate, how soon the clutch releases and engages etc). Also, if you want, from stationary potion you can engage the hand breaks, and as you move the foot from foot break to the acceleration while the clutch is released, you have to quickly release the hand break too! moving from ultimate parked stationary position is relatively easy, but it is not so on a stop-move-stop move drive lane in sever traffic up a hill. Ultimately its the balance of Clutch and Accelerator in a synchronized way!

Made it look very easy. Good explanations.
DO NOT PRESS DO THIS!!!)
However in bumper to bumper traffic, it may not be so easy as it is said here.
It's very easy if you use the handbrake, no matter how close the person is behind you or how steep the hill is.
u can't keep using handbrake in crowded streets ... it's silly
goldberg 7878 - why is it silly? I've been driving stick in crowded streets for 11 years without issue using this method.
