Bruno and the folks at SMS are at the top of their game, not just because of their skills, but because they believe in fostering talent. I learned almost everything I know about motion capture from these guys, but it didn't happen overnight. They had the time and patience to train me up, and for that I'm very grateful!
Wow! Awesome to see a comment from you. I was impressed by the way you “auditioned”. I mean you proactively practicing axe movements and sending the video to SMS. That’s inspiring.
@@Pan_Z Yes but the decision makers are not. Hence they don't give the freedom required to the creators. The decision makers at Playstation studios allow their studios to go all out. Most of the well known publishers keep trying to create service games, MTS, online only etc..
@@kusayfarhan9943 I guess good on Sony for not trying to make it a service game? I don't think that's something we should really be praising. It's like thanking someone for not being a total asshole, because everyone else it. Sony isn't a saint because EA & Ubisoft are snotty bastards. Sony (the publisher) didn't make the game. Santa Monica did.
I loved GOW 1 to 3 so much that I was sure to hate the new one happening in the Nordic mythology. I delayed playing for years... I only played because my brother-in-law told me it was really good and he was sure I'd love it in the first 20 min. I decided to try it and he was right. After 20 min I put the controller down because I wanted to play at home instead, and I bought the game once I was home. A week or so later, it was my favorite game.
The series has this beautiful synergy now in that the new games wouldn’t have the same impact and meaning without the baggage of the old ones, and the original titles have been made better retroactively when you know where the character ends up after all that chaos.
@@oliverthulin8192 I agree! Even in the first game in the Nordic mythology, when he retrieved the blade of chaos, I got goosebumps, and you get that only if you played the originals.
Exactly! That scene is my favorite moment in the whole series. The first time I saw it, all these old scenes would flash before my eyes - the moment Area had them seared into his forearms, how they were used to destroy his own family and the destruction of the whole pantheon that was to come. I love how they really leaned into that, and how clearly Chris Judge understood the weight of that moment.
Would love to see the other 2 presentations he talked about, but can't find them anywhere. I'd like to especially see the Cinematography one, would be really cool.
10:40 - I think the appropriate term here would be 'believable'... Their not 'realistic', but they feel anchored to the laws of physics etcetera in a game-feel / subconcious or emotional kind of way, but not literally. It's totally over the top and epic but it still kinda feels like something you could have seen in the real world - or how it would look if it was possible in the real world.
That's how every AAA and many AA, hell, even some indie games are done nowadays? Motion capture is cheap enought that it makes no sense NOT to use it as a jumping off point for humanoid characters. But raw motion capture lack impact, so you always have to tweak it.
Eh. I got excited for nothig. I hoped for some tips on making snappy, impactful animations, but no luck. It more about mocap and cinematography than gameplay animation.
48:17 if the animators have to demonstrate the moves for the motion capture actor anyway, why hire the actor instead of just having the animators put on the suit and do the motion capture themselves?
This was covered in the keyframes and cardboard props lecture. The animators did mocap themselves to plan out cinematics, but that didn't work for every scenario. If you need stunt performers, if you need performers of different size, then actors help. But the primary reason is that as you get closer to the deadline, the animators need to do their actual job of animating, so hiring actors is a way of freeing up animators to get more content produced
I would have apreciated much more a talk about old god of war animation pipeline, since here they are mentioned and there are some really cool things like the swords that are splitted from the chain instead of being animated all together. Motion capture is not interesting, stop doing talks about mocap, publish some talks with real animation design

@@mauriciofontes I think I was in the middle of doing a Tekken IRL video that day, and so I just changed my shirt and had some fun with an ax.
That's awesome I want to work at Santa Monica too and learn some stuff from them and I will!
@@Manbussiness Any updates? Also how you been?
Keep the God of war Talks coming GDC:), Such a remarkable experience.
What they did to the Blades of Chaos is straight up MASTERFUL ARTISTIC ACOMPLISHMENT!!! PROBLEM SOLVING PERFECTION!!!!
God of War has always had such satisfying melee animations, and the new one really amped it up.
This has increased my respect for game makers and makes sense why during corona it’s hard to make games
This is why God of War is in a league of it's own. The amount of passion and time put in is amazing.
I see this comment on every other GDC video.
Nearly everyone that makes games is passionate about games. 'Tis why they make games for a living.

Well, GJ and great talk :)
The real God of war fans fell not only with the graphics but also the great gameplay , that's why we watch this great gods teach us how it's done!
This is Fantastic! True to their Craft. Everyone contributing, creative & Sincere. True Artists. My favorite Game of all time. Bravo
Playing this game at 60fps on PS5 is a dream
After playing through so much of the game. It's trippy to watch these screen tests and hear these voices coming out of real people
I will applie Bruno!

Motion capture + key framing... no wonder the animation quality was stellar!

Hopefully Ragnarok will address the sliding-to-target issue during combat.
i mean this isnt 2k. not sure why thats an issue in a action game of this nature.
SMS, always the God!

The animators aren't going to have the nuanced details that the relative experts would.
