Yes... Worf gets the best lines in this episode. Also in general, the "straight man" delivery as he bashes the mandolin and the "sorry" at the end is peak comedy. I really enjoyed the diversion into something less serious, it's very much original series episode, you could easily see this done as a Trelane episode where he just wants to play with his mortal toys. By the start of the 4th season and the rest of the series run it got a lot more relaxed and it also shows in how much more the cast acts with each other. Far past the stuffy stiff days of season one. Which amplifies how much these castmates became a family in real life, they are all still very close. Which for some was very much needed, Will Wheaton especially.
In one of the novels, the Enterprise crew encounter a civilization that's like Europe in medieval times. Worf very much wants to go down to the planet because he sees it as similar to Klingon culture: a violent place that is governed by strict rules of honour. So he's disappointed that he's not chosen to be on the away team. Then he's told that Captain Picard wants him to beam down, and he's elated! So they give him the costume he's supposed to wear, and it turns out that Picard wants him to pretend to be a genie. The costume is like silk robes with curly slippers. Worf sees it as a very silly way of dressing. However, the obvious rage he's feeling really helps to sell the supernatural power of his role! From the point of view of the people on the planet, this is a huge being with a distorted face that is dressed in a bizarre manner and intensely staring with menace at everybody!
Fun fact: the bit where Worf smashes Geordi's mandolin & says "Sorry" is a direct reference to _Animal House_ (1978), wherein Bluto (John Belushi) famously does the exact same thing.
@@maxducoudray Agreed. Hell, I'm a Gen Xer, and when I saw it when I was in college in the late 1980s, it was already showing its age and not living up to its rep.
I've often wondered if this episode (1991) inspired Mel Brooks to cast Patric Stewart as King Richard in "Men in Tights" (1993), but I haven't been able to track that down. I wouldn't doubt it.

Riker on shipwide intercom: "Attention all crew members, this is the First Officer. Q wants to something nice for the Captain. That is all. Riker out."😂
I saw a video of the cast at a convention where they said it was Michael Dorn himself who was pushing after season 1 to make Worf the subtle comedic relief. Apparently the show's creators couldn't see it working at first, the contrast between a serious broody character and comedy, but Dorn's dead pan tongue-in-cheek performance was so good that they found ways to create more funny moments for him!
@@stumilesyt Another great example is of course Teal'c from Stargate SG-1, another big-gruff-tough-guy-with-a-heart-of-gold character. It helps that his actor Christopher Judge is absolutely hilarious and has perfect comedic timing.
Jonathan Frakes told a story about how he was whacked over the head with a sword while filming this episode and was taken to hospital for stitches. They rolled him into casualty in his Little John costume, and nobody batted an eye. That's Hollywood!
Those episodes are a lot of fun for the cast, but Gates McFadden and Marina Sirtis were a bit miffed that they were the only cast members already trained in sword fighting and still they weren't allowed to show it, instead being limited to smashing pots on guards' heads.
Worf smashing Geordi's lute was an allusion to John Belushi smashing a guitar in the movie "Animal House". It was a frat party and some hipster was playing guitar on the stairs. He grabbed it from the guy, smashed it, the said, "Sorry."
A lot of people misunderstand the difference between an antagonist and a villain. An antagonist is the source of conflict for the protagonist, a villain does evil acts, but an antagonist need not be evil just as protagonist is just the POV character. So you are 100% correct, Q is an antagonist. Some stuff is evil, some just strange, but he is always a source of chaos and conflict, a catalyst for something.
Well said! I was thinking that when she was debating whether Q is an antagonist. He literally “antagonizes” our main POV characters so he is by definition an antagonist no matter his motives.
Ha Ha Ha. The Mandolin... I re played that 3 times it was so funny that you laughed at that. Good reaction, Jen. always fun with your reactions. Thank you. 😊
For those who don't prefer the word "antagonist" to describe Q in this series, I offer the word "foil" (A person or thing that contrasts with and so emphasizes and enhances the qualities of another).
People confuse 'antagonist' for 'villain'. Antagonists are a _story_ role. Villains are a _character_ role. You can have a loving, caring antagonist in the form of a parent trying to keep their kid out of trouble in a teen romp comedy. The kid is still trying to get around their parents in order to get to that party where they'll win the love of their life.
This one was my favorite episode to see how close the characters have become. Worf smashing the instrument, Beverly laughing in background and Geordi looking puzzle.
