One of the great things about this episode is that when you get heated for Picard being on the stand, but not for Tarses it shows the viewers bias. While we don't know the latter, he should be afforded the same doubt as to his guilt and instead capitalizes on the viewers zeal to "crack the case" to show just how easy it is to get involved in a witch hunt. This is further re-enforced by Worf's admission at the end of how he fell into the trap.
This and Measure of a Man are well remembered and venerated for being the best of Star Trek on Trial for a reason. As long as there's a society, these stories will be relevant.

13:36 Every reaction to this episode, I point to this moment. Picard knows how she feels about her father. He knows that's her 'berserk button', but he doesn't want to use it. He made his speech, imploring people to listen to their better angels, and he made the appeal to do the right thing. She responded by playing the 'Borg' card.
When he facepalms, you can see the exact moment he decides to take the gloves off.
He starts quoting her father; you can see Riker's head tilt in confusion. What does this quote have to do with the Borg?
Satie goes ballistic, and the game is over. Picard didn't argue her points, because there's no point arguing half-truths and lies. Instead, he exposed her as a barely restrained lunatic, until everyone saw it, and the Admiral had to walk out.

    • @TechnoMageB5
      @TechnoMageB5 Місяць тому +4

Picard once said something along the lines of: the court is a crucible. In it we burn away irrelevancies until the truth is revealed.
And he did exactly that when he, as you aptly put it, took "the gloves off" and provoked her into exposing herself for who she really was.
      Underrated comment.

TNG's ability to clearly elucidate ethical principles and demonstrate their importance is why it played such a meaningful part in my growing up, and I suspect for others as well. The Drumhead is a beautifully paced and written example of how dogmatic belief and human weakness can turn something good into an instrument of evil: Sati believes in the Federation so strongly that her desire to protect it leads her to a paranoia which defiles everything it is supposed to represent. Most people have an ideology of some sort, a core set of beliefs which define (in the broad sense) what one believes will produce positive outcomes over negative ones. This episode is a great example of the importance of not allowing ideology to become an identity, but to instead remember the principles, why they matter and how they apply to real life, which formed that ideology in the first place (as in: Sati identifies with the Federation but neglects its values).

This is one of my favorite episodes in all of the series, and had quite an effect on me during my developmental years. It's constantly shown how utopic the Federation is, and how they've evolved past so many social and ethical issues that seem insurmountable to us in our day and age. Despite all of that, this kind of mob mentality, associative guilt, and lack of respect for personal privacy will _always_ exist, as will people who use it for their own benefit. It's one of the darker parts of human nature, and no one is immune to it. I think my favorite bit, besides Picard taking a stand against this with one of the best speeches ever, is Worf at the end. He realizes how easy it is to do wrong while being certain you're doing right, and that it's a constant battle that must always be fought.

One of my all-time favorite episodes of any Trek series. More relevant today than it was 30-some years ago. And yes, everyone starts out liking Satie, and boy does she do a massive heal turn!

This is such a good episode, and it remains alarmingly relevant today. How easy it is for paranoia to overwhelm your good senses and lead you down the rabbit hole to baseless conspiracy theories that do real damage to real people. We never find out what becomes of Simon Tarsis, but at the very least, lying on a job application can get you fired, so there's a good chance that he was right that his Starfleet career is over.
And look at Worf! He was all but ready to fling Simon Tarsis out the airlock over the revelation that he had Romulan ancestry, because as he states himself, "If a man were not afraid of the truth, he would answer!" Meanwhile, he finds himself on the stand for having a father that history records as a traitor, even though we all know better.

One might wonder where Troi was when there was a Betazoid interrogator onboard the ship, but she would have been superfluous in this episode when you think about it. All she could do is confirm that Tarses was lying and that the Admiral really did believe that there was some grand conspiracy aboard the Enterprise, nothing to really advance things. This really settled into the clash of Principles versus Security between Picard and Satie with Worf pulled into the thick of it. The actual "conspiracy" got settled at the very beginning of the episode with the Klingon scientist; Geordi and Data proved that the rest was incidental, just a manufacturing error with a warp core component, but Satie and her interrogator were convinced there was more to it. That's what happens when you pull a specialist individual group into something - a lot of the time they're motivated to find something that fits their wheelhouse whether it's there or not.

Not my favorite episode, but one with several important lessons:
    1. Bad guys who disguise themselves with good deeds are hard to spot.
    2. Never go looking for evidence to support what you already believe. You will ALWAYS find it, even if it isn't actually there.
    3. Nobody should be above reproach or scrutiny, but also, nobody should be scrutinized baselessly. It's a very delicate balance.

Yea, you fell into it yourself. The second an "emotion reader" said someone lied about something, you agreed and wanted them to dig further without any thought to what was being lied about. Everyone lies or withholds private things, and that is something a Betazoid would read 24/7. I felt really uncomfortable way back when I first saw this episode.

It has some of my favourite quotes, especially Picards final speech to Worf at the end:
“It’s easy to spot a moustache twirling villain. Those who clothe themselves in good deeds are well camouflaged”
It’s a big part of why I hate virtue signalling.
All I can think is “what are you trying to obfuscate and hide”

Yes, this episode is important regarding not judging innocent people or judging people because of one own´s limited believes or "personal facts". I actually saw this episode as a kid and I still, to this day, remember how Picard´s speech and the unjust treatment of people by this "investigator" made me think twice about judging other people without evidence. The reason the Borg assimilated Picard was to use his knowledge to conquer the Federation. That's why she brings up the 11,000 people killed in the Borg attack; she is unsubtly implying their blood is on his hands. But any objective observer can see Picard was not only one of the Borg's countless victims, but the first to actually turn the tables on them and use their exploitation as a means to finding the key to defeat them. It's safe to say that if not for Picard, humanity would have been completely assimilated, and the Borg would continue their spread throughout the universe.
