Marcy omg my 5 year old just got diagnosed with ear fluid. He is getting ear tubes this Friday! He talked some but stopped……he has virtual autism . We stopped tv and he now give eye contact but just never seemed to understand what everyone was saying. Then he developed the autism symptoms of covering ears at loud sounds. I just read this….. Auditory Overstimulation
The excessive fluid pressure in the inner ear can cause parts of the cochlea to become overstimulated, leading to hyperacusis. This overstimulation can make normal environmental sounds seem excessively loud and intrusive, contributing to discomfort and a reduced tolerance for sound. I pray he gets these tubes and he is healed. Thank you Marcy for talking about ears! We even went to er and the dr didn’t see ear fluid even though my so was screaming bloody murder in pain. He was antibiotic’s from pediatrician but it just wouldn’t go away! I decided to take him to ENT and guess what a trained dr found the problem!!!!! I’m so upset he may have had this for years!!!! Ear fluid can go undetected my dr said !

Hi! I’m a deaf mother of deaf daughter. She has the problem with fluid and her school said she’s ASD. Now she is improved when she’s growing out. I still have her a surgery on November 15th for ear tube and remove her tonsils. I knew it that fluid did cause my daughter an autism- like behavior but she is getting less of her autism similar. I pray that she will be healed after ear tube surgery. ❤

I’m so happy I came across this video we had a hearing test done for my son because he isn’t talking and found out he has fluid in both ears and 2 days before that the dr didn’t even take the time to look at his ears thoroughly and just referred him to an autism specialist and speech delay therapist so I’m glad we had a hearing test scheduled 2 days later and now we have a referral to an ENT so I’m hoping this helps him thank you for your videos and giving me more of an understanding

@@zainbhatti9006 not exactly the same story mine… my now 25 month old had had 8 ear infections in a row and the rest of the time in the last 10 months she had been sick with colds and strep 3 times… the whole 10 months she was sick except for maybe 1-2 days in between sicknesses. At my 24 month check up she scored low in speech due to having the same words as in the 18 month appt and low social skills. My little girl would not turn when called and wouldn’t participate in class activities she kept to herself. I decided that the daycare was the source of every virus and germ that made her sick and pulled her out. She had fluid in her ears and her ear drum wasn’t moving completely . She had her tubes placed and by the time she could have her surgery she only had almost no fluid left. That was 3 weeks
After the last time she had gotten sick. Her hearing test was good except her left ear that needed higher frequency to detect sound and got her tubes in. I was told it would be pretty swollen for about 2 weeks and hearing could take about 6 months to fully reestablish. Well it’s now 3 days after the surgery and she is already showing a lot of improvements. She turns when called almost immediately and looks at me when I talk to her. She attempts to reply with random sounds and im figuring out “heh” means yes to her for now. She said the word “key” twice today and that’s the first word she says in months. Before this I was told she needed a speech and autism evaluation.

I am seeking professional advice/ help with my fight with my school district for appropriate services for my daughter. She had middle ear fluid that caused a 90%hearing loss that wasn't caught until she was almost 3yo. She was quickly misdiagnosed as autistic. We are now working to have the diagnosis removed but the school continue to see her difficulties as autism and/or dyslexia when they are in fact due to reoccurring fluid buildup. She has had 3 surgeries and is now passing her hearing exams. But she has EXTREME anxiety towards phonics based learning that I believe is PTSD based. But the school will not classify her as a hard of hearing or having an emotional disturbance bc they see it as autism and dyslexia.

So this is rewarding and confirming at the same time. Thanks for taking out the time. I feel really sorry for those who were misdiagnosed as autism as the doctors were trying to conclude of my son. My daughter went a year and half with ear infections before getting tubes due to how sick she stayed and has been in speech since she was 1, she is now almost 4 in July and while her speech has improved sooo much BUT now that she’s in preschool they are pressing for autism test but I know that her delays are from how much she went without being able to hear like her attention span and her frustration if someone doesn’t understand her and they force her.
Other than speech, what is something I can do to help her catch back up to her age from that time missed for her growth?
How do you handle a situation like this with childcare and schools?

We just took my two year old son to have an ear test done he wasn’t responsive to the low pitches and they found fluid in both ears, he went through a faze around 18-24 months of consistent irritation of the ear and ear infections and now that I look back this is when I started to see the sensory behaviour you’re talking about he tends to shake his head a lot, he doesn’t play with children he drags me and his dad and grandparents around if he wants something, he does in fact give eye contact and also reply to his name when he can visually see us saying it or if we are loud enough.

Thank you so much for this information. I’ve often heard of children who “lose their autism diagnosis”. It made me wonder if this is part of the reason why. My son is 18 months and he does not respond to his name at all and he is also never pointed or follow when we point. I’m still cautiously optimistic that when he gets tubes this week, it may solve the issues that he’s having. Is also during a time where many children have spent many months away from other children so it’s very hard to understand what their social skills truly are. I’m going to check back in in a month or so to report back whether or not tubes helped with the middle ear fluid my son has been experiencing recently.

This literally was what a coworkers daughter told me happened to her now 9 yo daughter. At her preschool they kept on telling her she was autistic and she kept on saying she “regressed” right at the time getting sick of her ears for months. My 2 yo has completed all her milestones early. She was 15 months completing 18 months milestones … that’s when she got in daycare and began to get sick… she had 9 ear infections total in 9 months. And the rest of the time has been congested with something the WHOLE time. My practitioner wants me to infer that she needs to get tested. I pressured her to refer her to an ENT which she did and her audiologist couldn’t even test her. They just detected movement in her ear but they couldn’t verify if she had fluid behind her ears. The ENT doctor just said she recommended speech therapy and tubes…. Because it was like hearing underwater with the chronic ear infections. My husband jumped at her for recommending surgery without testing her and after the doozie of audiology test. At the time I was upset they couldn’t even test her or check her spell and 10 days postpartum… so I let it go… she was 21 months… 2 ear infections later and zero speech progress now my baby won’t listen to speech she literally responds excellent to all gestures. I could no talk a word. Make signals and gestures and she engages with me 100% … I have an ENT appt at the local county hospital in 5’days and I am pretty sure she will have glue ear. I pulled her out of daycare and I hope she finds solutions for this. I see her only interested in toys that bring her a visual stimulation and does pretend play. I’ll update y’all with whatever we discover. Whether it is fluid or delays or ASd. We love our baby and will help her.

@@WavesofCommunication Today we went to the ENT clinic and she did relatively well in her hearing test. She was placed in a sound proof room with an attendant while she sat on my lap. Being 24 months exactly she was a mess. The audiologist made noises in either side of us and play cute and funny images in each screen. Once she got to low pitch low volume noises like whispers and she would not have a reaction besides continue to whatever she was playing with and be distracted. Doctor said that she was over it and disengaged. In my opinion she was playing and being wild the whole time except when she heard something “weird” she’d look and investigate. She has fluid in her ears and her eardrum was not moving 100%. She is scheduled for tubes in a week.

@@WavesofCommunication today it’s been 3 days my now 25 months old daughter had her tubes placed. The changes in her behavior are astonishing. She turns back every time we call her name. When we ask her questions she attempts to respond with a “heh” sound. She used to not have great eye contact just 4 days ago and now she looks at me the whole time I ask her something and while she tries to reply using sounds that right now don’t mean anything. I can’t believe I let her ear infections continue to come back thinking that medications would resolve her problem when the fluid was there all these months (almost a year) she doesn’t ignore her 4 month sister any more. When she makes noises she comes to caress her and hold her. I cannot even believe it’s been all this change in just 3 days legit!!! She hasn’t even started her speech therapy. I’ll continue to update. My mama heart is finding so much joy with this beautiful child.

Omg..can you please share these exercises. I have a son turning 3 in July and he has a speech delay. He babbels but I know he can hear but I don't think he can clearly. This is say I feel his delay is linked to his hearing. Also, when he lays down I rub his ears out of curiosity and he willingly sits there so peacefully and let's me massage his ears so that's another reason I feel it's his ears but I don't want tubes or any kind of surgery. I definitely want to see if it's the problem so I will get him tested with an ENT..but I want to cure the issue as safely as naturally as possible. Please share your methods. Thanks in advance❣

My son had a ton of wax and no fluid. We had an ENT remove the wax and he passed his hearing test with flying colors. But unfortunately it’s still taking a long time and months of speech therapy for him to talk, so unfortunately I think my son is a late talker and may have mild autism or apraxia. But I truly believe the ear wax and multiple cases of RSV and Covid made it worse.

Hello, I wrote a comment before about my son. I recently took him to the ENT again but this time it was for snoring and possible sleep apnea. He will be getting his tonsils and adenoids removed next month. My oldest son will have to have his removed as well. My youngest son had 5 ear infections last year starting in January going through till April. In April he was diagnosed, he is a late talker but I don’t agree with the diagnosis. Are the tonsils connected to the ear infections? Prior to the ear infections any symptoms he had weren’t there only late talking. Also, he’s 3 now and the whole thing with isolation during Covid. We are now trying to get back to living in a normal manner. Thank you for all you do

Also, my 3 year old will dig in his ears pretty frequently. It doesn’t seem like he’s in pain when he does it. And his ear wax is a dark brown color which seems weird to me. I told the ENT but they didn’t say anything about that.

My son had an appointment today. He turned two in October and is still only saying Dada, Mama, growling and babbling. He exudes most of these behaviors, except for hitting his head and face. At our appointment today, our doctor (we're new patients with him) mentioned that he's not concerned about autism based on his observation, but it's always a possibility in developmentally delayed kiddos. He stressed that we get his hearing checked but said that he couldn't see if he had any fluid. His Grandpa and Uncle have both been hard of hearing their entire lives. Should I see an ENT specialist or just test his hearing?

Hello Mia - There are many ways to manage ear fluid holistically. You can do a keyword search on the channel here for a few videos. However, managing ear fluid alone will not result in spontaneous speech improvement. You will need to help him make up for the speech he has missed while he couldn't hear. You can do this with natural language facilitation and you can begin that now, while you are still working with ear fluid management. Without your assistance with the language part, he will remain delayed longer. Visit WavesofCommunication.com to learn about all of the ways you can learn to help your son.
