Everyone Plays Ramattra WRONG! - Best Playstyle Guide

- Blizzard made a mistake selling Ramattra as a tank who wants to close the distance, when it seemed obvious to many experts that would not be the case. Mixing my own experience and comment from top tier players who are optimistic about Ramattra power in todays video we dispell many of the misconceptions about his best playstyle, kit, focus and team comp strategy. Also, little tip : When you want to ult but are in nemesis form, cancel the form 1st, THEN ult. Since ult pop nemesis form, it also bring the free 150 armor bonus, which doesn't if you ult in nemesis.
That sounds like a bug to me.
@@Hiroth86 blizzard like to call it "features"
@@Hiroth86 that's more like an oversight
@@skyezblue3136 "Just part of the skill ceiling bro" 🤣
That is NOT a bug. That is exactly how it works. Everything you go into nemesis form you gain that 150 armor.
It felt more right staying in omnic form as much as possible and using nemesis mode as a more defensive ability
He’s as good as his healers. If they straight pocket him he doesn’t die
@@FDE4L if you're playing tank in a way that you're relying on your healers to totally pocket you, you're playing tank wrong lol
But in rams case he needs the pocket otherwise he can’t do his job at all so it boils down to 2 options, have a tank that works or not a tank at all. Pick your poison.
@@Sam-vw4ks I feel like you totally missed the point of the video, lol. The point isnt to try to be Rein and go in and punch, it's to hold a corner or angle and win the cooldown exchange
Definitely agree Nemesis form is also a good surprise when the enemy team thinks that they can finish you off.
Yeah, this video confirmed my feelings about Ram's playstyle. I've so many teams get run over because they are playing Ram wrong by rushing in. He's not about rush or dive tank. He's a defensive tank, akin to OW1 Orisa. Primary fire has great range and damage for poke, shield for close range skirting, Ravenous Vortex is similar to Halt in keeping players where you want them, and Nemesis form is mostly fortify. He's OW1 Orisa and I loved OW1 Orisa.
I loved OW1 Orisa too and this explains why I really like using Ram. I love playing the new OW2 Orisa as well but its a different playstyle
a tempo tank 👍 just a slower one than we thought
@@michaels9595 Top500 Streamers are associating "Tempo" with speed.
No he isn’t. For one he has no fortify and he barely survived even when play more defensive when support don’t heal you. Vortex is no where near the quality of halt and pretty trash even you use it smart. Your opinion is like Freedo opinion not fact
Holy shit nice to finally see people who ENJOYED Overwatch 1 Orisa, I looooved playing as her, felt like such a Badass impenetrable wall as her
Even as a lowly silver player, this felt right. I was able to pressure out the people spamming nemesis form with the staff a lot more than when I was in nemesis. Although I will say, punching people as a JoJo stand is fun.
Ramattra REALLY REALLY depends on the situation also don’t expect block to do much without a pocket mercy or a support breathing down your neck nemesis form is for pushing WITH your team
The hood thing about his play style as explained in this video, this means he is amazing with Zenyatta, the discord orb and harmony orb will make Rammatra more likely to survive and can help him pick off those important targets, plus a trancendence and annihilation together are amazing
I am zen main, and i felt it was strong (with him in the team) and also against him (enemy team).
They are Yin and Yang
Cheese and Ham.
This is actually so helpful, and also now I like him even more because, until your friend pointed it out, I SOME HOW NEVER PUT 2 AND 2 TOGETHER THAT HES BASICALLY A TANKY MAGE AND NOW HIS CHARACTER FANTASY HAS GROWN EXPONENTIALLY FOR ME
Steady on, anyone who played a lot Ram would be seeing how easy he falls. Also this video is too abstract and weak to be deemed persuasive just a differing opinion
@@Henbotyea i get that from freedo a lot, his advice always brings my effectiveness level down bc apparently im playing wrong when im really right
Well I mean yeah, it was more so helpful to get the perspective of using his transform more so defensively than aggressively. And it makes sense to hold onto his abilities a bit more in general.
Otherwise its not like I just blindly follow what the commentator says per se
Also yeah when I said "tanky" I meant for a mage. Not to mention yeah his staff gets WAY more work done than his punchies
@@strawberrygemz2020 problem w his staff is that its very unreliable at securing kills it being a weapon that shoots very slow projectiles that have a hitbox as big as bastions scout gun. It doesnt matter how good you are at tracking, all it takes is for the enemy to shimmy a little and youre going to have a very hard time trying to predict enemy movements. Only time its good is at long range spam or if you can predictable enemy movements. not to mention that rams omnic form has a measly 450hp and his only protection is an immovable shield that only lasts 3 seconds. Youre going to need his nemesis form to stay alive in fights. Not to mention vortex feels like a washed up sojourn slow field that has the useless gimmick of pulling people to the ground except that the vortex is small af and all you need to do is walk 3 steps to the right to get out of it NOT to mention most characters have an ability to escape easily that doesnt include the ability to jump high or fly (which only 3 characters can do btw). Ok im done ✅
From my experience you shouldn't use nemesis to create an oportunity, you should create the oportunity and THEN turn into nemesis, this fixed most of my mistakes, also saving one ability to use during nemesis is a big help, either the shield or vortex.
You cant use shield during nemesis tho.
@@mechanicalsilence1 place it before, stay around it while in nemesis form
@IEatAnts644 yes, specially if you can line up some enemies and just walk in while getting healed, usually if the enemy tank fucks up somehow or if their supports used important cooldowns you wanna go in after stalling with omnic form
I think Kiriko does what people want Lucio to do as far as speed boost for rammatra. If Kitsune and rammatra ult used together I think that is powerful and the right time for a speed boost. Long enough to get into their grill and you have your other teammates supporting you. This is also a very easy tell for your teammates to know okay it’s time to go in and pressure the other team.
I think the only time you really want a Lucio is when it's time to pop Q. And even then if your timing is good then you shouldn't need him unless the enemy hard disengages. I've noticed that sucking up all the cooldowns and damage and attention with block and then getting healed back up works pretty well as long as they don't run past you and kill your team.
Day 1 I made the same mistakes, I thought I could just rush up to the enemy, hulk out, then just tear them up, but was like 'why am I dying so damn fast'. I learned the same lessons. His staff is hella strong and I focus on long-range poking. I don't use nemesis unless the enemy is pushing up, or I'm having to retreat and need a little extra armor.
It's interesting how the community "knows" a certain hero will be OP before they release, then go on to call them useless and so forth. It's almost like we should wait a while before making any calls...
It makes all the sense in the world. Wow. Fascinating that the way to maximize him may be to do the complete opposite of what one initially thought. I was thinking Lucio was strong with him for enabling his ult. Not necessarily in the mid fight but to chase down runners who try to end his ult by creating distance but maybe that doesn’t maximize the support’s ability to contribute. Great video!
For the time I used our new Omnic, I felt like Nemesis doesn’t do as much harm as I thought it would. It is nice to “close out” a fight against any squishies that step out of line, but the mileage between the barrier and the primary fire certainly helps out more.
If Nemesis had more range in the punches, then maybe it could be used more. But if that were to happen, that could make it too overpowered. As is, I think he is a fine addition to the tank roster.
My problem with nemesis is it doesn't feel like an effective get off me tool for anyone but brig. The punch hit box feels so narrow, in that hitting a freshly demeched baby Dva or a Sym that's bounching around in your face is a nightmare. Maybe the punch just needs to have a wider sweep so it feels even close to as good as rein hammer.
When it comes to his ult taking a point and there being "nothing they can do about it", I have to contest that. Shields block the LOS for that ult, as does mei wall. A winston bubble is great for it because you can shield dance in and out and his ult can only effect 1 side or the other. So not every character has a way to get around it, but several do. (including brig shield)
This is really good. I was just thinking yesterday that he feels like OW1 Orisa in a way. I've had a lot more success holding corners and using the staff to clear space than I have running in. The you can use nemesis form when they push in at you. Genjis, Tracers and Lucios all have a bad day when you're punching them.
A thing I would like to add is if there’s a shield character like sigma or Reinhardt protecting their team with their shield it’s best to go into nemesis form to pressure the tank and the people behind him. One of two things will happen
1- the tank will take down their shield and attempt to go offensive(never ends well)
Or
2- the people behind the tank will retreat leaving the tank alone (easy kill)
And for certain scenarios like trying to finish off certain squishys it’s best to go into nemesis form.
I kinda saw this principle in action the other day. I was playing ram in no limits against 3 roadhogs on the enemy team (what a miserable time) and my other ramattra teammates were trying to push hard and were kinda getting stomped for it while I was staying back, playing corners and being really stingy with my cool downs and I was getting a lot more value for it.
I've barely played Ramattra due to tank queues being so long, but when I do, I typically forgot that he had a Nemesis form. The staff seems to be much better for him.
Tip for the nemesis form into ult combo: try manually cancelling your intitial nemesis form after your armor is gone _before_ ulting- it seems ulting while already in nemesis doesn't refresh your armor for some reason.
Activation of nemesis form will always grant the 150 armor. It is not for "no reason". It is working as intended.
@@samoochi2172 fr I’m confused why people keep saying “ some reason”
@@samoochi2172 No shit. Never claimed it was a bug. Tell me why this obvious QoL thing shouldn't have been obvious to them in playtesting.
@@_narrows I never said that you said it was a bug.
@@samoochi2172 then I don't see the point of your original reply
I was playing him more like a wave tank, pushing or defending based on the eb and flow of their mistakes some plays etc. Excellent video, i'm sure with time we'll see people get way better.
My main gripe with the omnic form is that I can rarely see where my projectiles are going so it’s harder to readjust, may just making the nano bots a little brighter would help?
I'm really glad you mentioned his playstyle is like attack Orisa.
Orisa was my long-time main in OW1, and seeing people say "Ramattra's the most fun high-skill tank in the game" while also having said "Orisa is braindead boring zzz" feels really validating when they have pretty much identical kits and playstyles.
I needed this! Thank you!
I like the take here man. Good video. I think one of the themes here that you touched on is actually the one thing Blizz did right in his description, and that is Tempo Tank. Like you said, pressing the issue with him is not a good idea. I'm learning that quickly. In regard to tempo, it's similar to music in that way. The tempo guides the music along and doesn't force it. It can change, as it does in plenty of musical examples, but it can be affected by the melody or rhythm as well. Situations don't always go as planned or as the map dictates in Overwatch and Ramattra is unique in his ability to aid in that change. He has to use his cooldowns in a more nuanced way that isn't seen with the typical Overwatch tank.
Thanks for the video and tips!
Great content man keep it up
Another good point with him, is to use Pummel to pick off low health enemies behind a tank.
When I played him, it felt like he was all about zoning. Scaring away with angles, blocking with the shield, throwing ravenous to deny good positions, putting infinite block in a hallway or behind an objective.
This video is right on the money. I've been looking at his kit and really on switch forms when I need to survive or kill a weak target that's retreating behind a shield. Fun tip is that switching forms also reloads your ammo.
I see I lot of people hating on Ram saying he's not good but I find him super fun and flexible, just need to know how to get a team to work around him
Something I find useful for when I use him is going into the nemisi form and then instantly swap back to get a fast head shots on the other tank and DPs
This video helped so much. Thank you.
I use ramattra as an anti dive class bruiser. I also use nemesis to take out the healers or keep ‘em to busy to do their job which has been working for the most part.
Ever since watching this video I changed my play style and I've been doing way better with him, I used to get 10 deaths a game, now I'm averaging 4, still a ways to go
Ramattra can be a thorn in the opposing team , the best way to play Ramattra is have a great healer, thats the secret to playing him
I think the devs were giga brain when they called him a "tempo" tank. they purposefully didn't specify what tempo lol
His "your miscalculations will cost you everything" voice line actually hints at his playstyle
I feel kinda good that I was playing like this prior to this video albeit I played a lot less polished but now I feel like I have a basis on how I can play better always helpful vids
Don’t want to say it, but I kinda called it on my comment on the ramattra guida video pre release. I said he would be really good on defence against rush comps that want to go in, just like orisa 1.0. I’m happy I finally understood a character strength by just a looking at its abilities and a bit of gameplay after 6 years of playing this game :)
FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE FIGURED IT OUT! this low key is how I've been winning all my Rammatra mirrors, they always pop Nemesis early and I just hold mine till. Like actually desperate, and really need it, or maybe to finish someone off if I run out of ammo, ty so much for getting the message out there.
Overwatch Devs: here’s how you play this new tank.
Your Overwatch: well, actually….
Fr tho I feel like this channel should be consulted by the devs
A pretty ironic thing I figured out is that Ram’s in game interaction with Junkrat actually confirms that the more tactical approche to his play style is indeed better and is the one that he canonically prefers over “brute force”👌
You’ve pretty much described how I’ve been playing ramattra i run my cd’s and then nemisis and block mostly unless Ik i can take out the enemy like if any squishy overextends or if the enemy tank is low but close especially on payloads
Legitimiately, as soon as I got my hands on rammattra I knew he wouldn't be understood by most people. It's all about the cooldowns. You can't play him aggressively. He's very much like DVa. Sure you can get kills being aggressive but she (and he) are best optimized on keeping their team alive.
Ram, Sojourn, Soldier/tracer, bap, mercy. Optimize your poke. Ram is there to defend against a rush or a dive. His punches pierce will break down either. His blocks can make him ultra survivable if used like DM. Additionally, If the opponent is using bap or ana with dive just shut off the few dive enemies by saving your barrier to block LoS
Was going to watch this video and smash the like button but then I remembered I don't have ramattra.
I'm pretty sure there was an interaction with junkrat
"I prefer tactical precision over brute force"
-Ramattra
As soon as I kept dying trying to go in, I eventually had to come to terms that I have to track much better with his staff (I'm still meh with tracking in general).
This has been the most confusing hero launch lol
Good to know others were seeing the potential in his main form. I kept feeling as though I was just outright playing him wrong by NOT using Nemesis more often
I play more methodically as Ram, but then there are moments where Im gonna run in and punch things because....well....its just fun to do! there is something satisfying about feeling like a huge destructobot mowing down everyone, even if I die, I just enjoy the feeling it gives me! (Also I dont play Comp so dont get @ me)
I've been saying this since I saw his kit. Ramattra, Mei, best long range dps for the map, kiriko, bap.
Though with the kiriko nerfs, there is an argument for mercy now instead of kiriko.
Just yesterday lectured about Ramatra when either my teammates were feeding enemy ram ult to last forever or commited too deep.
I haven’t had time to play since the new season started. As a tank main, I thank you Fredo for saving me from feeding and losing on the new guy by correcting my play before I even started.
The roadhog giving up after that hook killed me
So from this video, to play Ram you basically: hulk out, block, don't fist a lot, be selfish, work the shaft
I feel like the reason I want to pop his shield early is because I'm dying almost immediately as soon as I step out of covers lol.
I hope Mauga is the aggressive tank we’ve always wanted.
is doom and hog not aggressive enough this season or something? i'd say getting one-shot deleted and punched off the map is pretty aggressive
Orisa, doom, and junker queen are all extremely mobile aggressive tanks.
Also mauga is a tank that likely carries a mini gun. He's not gonna be rush in either.
So when do you think we should pick him over tanks? Against hitscan?
I don't play him at all so far, but good to know that I'm already doing it wrong.
Thank you for finally getting this straightened out, with my new main. I'm stuck as a copper 5 tank because I main him, and no one knows how he makes great plays. I have had three 20 player Kill streak.
Ok but real question. Any tips to help curb adhd levels of excitement? I usually play ram a bit more mid range but end up getting excited and rush in. Sometimes it works and sometimes not
Also a little tip, press fire to cancel placing down his shield, just in case your holding down the button but don’t wanna place it down.
or just look up
Is there a guide out there on how to play Tankfist? I used to be a decent Doom in OW1 but having a hard time adjusting to his new play-style, and the new solo-tank role, in general.
ahhh yeah this validates my suspicions on rams playstyle. first few days i always got demolished by playing how the ow team advertised ram to be played as. but as soon as i played a more defensive pokey style, i found myself winning and surviving a lot more
Fun fact, pairing his slow with his staff can guarantee picks on out of position squishies as hitting critical shots becomes easier
It's like what he tells junkrat. "I prefer to be more tactical than to just brute force it"
This is really interesting. I wish the devs would consider pros opinions first and then market the hero as “this or that”. I definitely would not have been standing in staff form as much until seeing this
Well that gives me hope. I played him that way since I unlocked him and get a lot of value out of him.
In my experience so far: Nemesis is best used to punish committed dives. Ram has OW1 Orisa vibes, but basically has a Rein hammer in her pocket for emergencies. Block fluttering is also insanely good, especially against heroes who need to reload and play relatively close like Junk, Tracer, Hog, or Reaper. If you can count enemy shots until they need to relead, you will win most exchanges if they stay in range. Block works like Rein shield, but the advantage is that Block can't be broken and Pummel is way faster and reaches further than a Rein swing. Also, don't be afraid to drop Nemesis the moment you kill someone if no one else is nearby IF you have his barrier ready. Barrier is always preferable to block and the staff is great. And speaking of the staff, its great at locking down corners since its just a constant stream of damage the enemy has to walk into to peak.
I agree his ult is awesome, but saying there's *nothing* the enemy can do in OT is pretty misleading. Literally any shield can break LoS and make your timer deplete. Some good shield dancing makes it pretty terrible unless you account for that, and even then you'll need perfect positioning or teammates focusing shields to avoid it
As a Lucio main my thought was the value isn't in getting in, it's in using speed to kitr so Ram can stay in Omnic longer or get out after punchy form ends if you haven't won the fight.
I really felt this when I play him for the first time... his nemesis formdid not seem to me like go go ability, but something to use to pressure and survive. His shield and abilities felt familiar though and that's because I play a lot of mei. As mei yo have to pick your battles and as ramattar I felt you also had too, not really going in like a doom.
I think Ramattra is fair and balanced in a game where most tanks are busted
Ram fits my playstyle perfectly, i also love how i can block dvas alt for my team. Having to play smart and strategic with my healer really makes the game fun and wins rewarding because its not mindless
The hog at 8:03 😂 he was disappointed
A year late but as a Sombra player, I found the transition to start using Ram easier than other tanks just because of some of the things you mentioned. We operate with a similar play style ehem... *Opportunist*
Great video, amazing tips, and thanks for sharing this info!
I COMPLETELY agree with this video! This was my mindset with Ramattra since he was released and I was surprised to see how many people were complaining about his abilities. Love your content Freedo! Keep up the good work!
Most important tip.. make sure to give your supports head pats before the start of that match to receive additional healing.
I was all set to rip on him as a character until I used him. He feels like a mix of old Orisa (who I truly miss) and Sigma. I like the character a lot because I don't play as aggressively as some and his "mage" form is cool to me.
8:05 can we talk about how that roadhog stopped to consider the consequences of his actions
I absolutely agree with Guru’s statement about Ramattra’s long range game. I’ve dueled Widowmakers and *won* with him.
It makes sense that Rammatra the tactician would be based around taking ground slow and methodically instead of rushing it for it.
It was barely day one when I figured out this was the best way to play Ram but wasn’t too sure and wanted to see a video or anything confirming this. Unfortunately all I seen was mix thoughts on Ram and mixed ideas as to how to play him correctly and most ppl i seen commenting on his playstyle was basically the way I see ppl play orisa with a little of rein thrown in there. So I’m glad this video confirmed what I thought was the best way to play him. Ngl tho, the first few matches I did play him like a dummy still I seen what worked. 10/10 tank imo and he definitely fits more of my playstyle but this is all coming from a one trick junkrat main disguised as a one trick Doom main, so take it as you will. What do I know lol
From I've played and seen on his kit I'm almost sure he's gonna be a situational defensive tank , he's extremely good holding high ground like no other tank has been before, because as soon as enemy team close gap on him, he goes into nemesis and punch their faces. But I don't see it working well on offensive positions because he lacks mobility and if you know how to play his against his cooldowns you engage/disengage at the right moment
People have mentioned how weak block is and while in nemesis form it's really only ok to save your life or distract the enemy for a little bit but with the ultimate block is amazing. You can just sit on a point blocking and bully everyone off if you have a healer keeping you topped off
I feel Ram is the advanced mechanic of Overwatch 1 Orisa. I was orisa main in OW1. I was little disapointed when i found out devs changed Orisa mechanic in OW2. But by playing as Ram, I found out that most of his abilities is based on Orisa in OW1.
1. shooting trace of projectiles(left mouse) is so similiar to that of orisa in OW1
2. Fortify with better DPS = Nemesis form
3. Halt! = nanobot cloud which makes enemy's movement slow
4. Orisa's Shield that can be placed in long range = Ram's shield ( even more instant than that of orisa)
I am happy that I can still play OW1 Orisa play style with somewhat advanced skill sets.
Honestly I'm super happy you made this video. I wasn't planning on playing Ramattra because of how I've seen him get played with the all in press the enemy style & it wasn't appealing to me. but the way you describe him here & the gameplay shown as an example I will definitely be trying him now.
Interesting... I really like Sigma's playstyle and feel comfortable with long range tanks. That said are there any good tips to use his staff better? It feels so hard to land anything using it.
I think the staff is just hard to use, we just need to get used to the projectile speed to track and predict enemy movements at range
@@pulsofumi578 the slow track is a good idea, tracking and protecting an area, like pre the pre healing with moira/kiriko
He is big defensive tank and can be very good with his ultimate when you have a good healer. Most people are going in punching away when he is better at shielding and taking damage while the team attacks
Massive agree. Thought this was kinda obvious for the most part after a couple games, but perception is a tricky thing so fair enough
Truth on the advice. I've been wrecking people in DM 1st then went in to normal games with Ram. Then pushed towards comp.
The counter to his ult is doomfist punch. Ive seen so many ramantras pop their ult and they IMMEDIATELY get punched out of range and the ult is gone after a whole 1 second.
New character: *releases*
Content creators: YOURE FUCKING PLAYING IT WRONG.
I've seen a couple of ramattras who backline and it can be effective in solo queue but in a team with comms he gets downed quick.
I’ve noticed that the best way for me to counter Ramantras ult at my level in support is a Lucio Is hard to hit and using speed boost (I have done it twice already). I have been able to pull my team mates out of a charging ramantra ult with a little ability…he isn’t very quick when he is in ult so I think if he had a Lucio the timer has less down time and he can trap more players with his death aura sooner which would extend his ult giving him more time to kill etc etc
I love this comment section. Your Overwatch is a great channel that rly attracts players who want to excel at the game and are open to the benefits of accepting feedback and discussing changes to their play styles.
I wish more of the OW community acted like this. The game would be even more amazing.
I was saying "yes" to everything you said the whole video lol
I've been playing him consistently for a few days now, and he is absolutely a powerful poke and wait tank. Combine his ult with an Ana and/or Kiriko ult, and we so far have a really high success rate of cleaning out a point.
Tell that to the Baptiste with 900 healing who flamed me last night for not "pushing them back" and "getting in there"
I mainly use memesis to finish people. I was attack orisa main in ow1 so i love his onnic form
