Horrible business practices by these companies. They only respond when the media exposes their dirty tricks.
They need to be fined for harm caused stress and trauma of patient.

20 years ago, my workplace began offering Blue Cross health/dental insurance to our employees. One of their agents came to our workplace, explained the policy, and signed up everyone interested. 6 months later I was talking with one of our employees about the insurance, and he mentioned he'd gotten a crown (on his tooth) but had been denied coverage. That seemed odd to me since I distinctly remembered the info pamphlets saying it was covered - I'd gotten a crown the previous year so I had specifically looked up if it was covered. And it was.
I dug up a copy of the pamphlet passed out during the presentation (yes we kept a copy on file). And sure enough, crowns were covered. I called our insurance agent about it, he looked at his materials, and he couldn't understand why it wasn't covered either. Long story short, we'd gotten the presentation and everyone had signed up for the insurance in April. Blue Cross published new pamplets in April saying crowns were not covered, but we'd gotten the old pamphlets. (Actually I suspect they hadn't distributed the new pamphlets until May/June.)
Blue Cross stepped up to the plate, acknowledged that they hadn't told agents the old pamphlets needed to be trashed and replaced with the new ones. And they paid for the employee's crown. I guess a lot has changed with them in 20 years.

@@kurbicksan4917 It is technically correct. Federal law (EMTALA) prohibits hospital emergency rooms from refusing to treat patients, even if they're unable to pay. But anyone can take advantage of this, not just people here illegally. (The hospital shifts the cost of people who do this and don't pay, into the bills of those of us who have insurance and do pay.)
