    the very reason to show up and sit down with a nice, entertaining chat for my morning starters, Dead at the Apollo is a Stupendous Idea !! what a great idea to do comedy to the over 50's by the over 50's, most over 50's listen to talk radio, mostly news and current events, drag their sad depressed arses back to Comedy. the World is sad enough, we really do need more Laughs. and the over 50's is a great market to tap.

    I remember him from the 90s, really funny.
    So glad he's managed to keep going all this time, says a lot in itself.
    I really should look around comedy clubs more, my local closed down and I can't be arsed traveling.

    Great show as always! Agreed with John about seeing comics at smaller venues (47mins approx). Often go to Comedy Bunker in Ruislip and see fantastic ‘stadium comedians alongside brilliant lesser known acts....Great night out watching a more close up visceral experience....similarly I recently came for the first time to see RHLSTP with my twin sister and her partner....(the Ed Milliband night)....We absolutely loved it! Even got to meet Ed and the hilarious Geoff Lloyd after who were both really nice.....It’s highly unlikely you d get this kind of experience at a larger venue...

    You can tell Rich is going slightly easy on him because he’s a genuinely nice man.
    Edit: nothing as beautiful as science! Sorry John!

    Great interview with a compelling and funny guest whom I have not see enough of. I will look up more of his work! I have to admit though, I got a bit stuck at the Jim Davidson and 'Life is too beautiful to be a coincidence parts'. Surely the work of Jim Davidson is proof enough that evolution doesn't always get it right. Nice to see Lenny Henry get a mention, although in a non-ironic way. Btw, got a new porridge recipe ... in a mug, half a sliced banana, one Yakult, four heaped tablespoons of oats, microwave for 1:20 sec (no longer, it explodes).

    Well John, you'd be pleased to know when I started watching I thought 'who the fucks that' and finished thinking 'he was awright'....moreover I have booked in for Al Murray at the Balham comedy festival and i've just started listening to your radio show...so i think 'awright' is probably underplaying it.

    he really couldn't answer the 'why have you forsaken me' question?
    Christ was quoting Psalm 22 - a hymn written several centuries before Crucifixion was invented; which goes into detail as to how the Messiah would have his hands and feet pierced
    if you compare Psalm 22 with the account of the Crucifixion in the 4 gospels you see many other striking parallels with the death of Christ - and what's more, Psalm 22 was one of the most well known of these hymns to the Jewish people, being something similar to the Christian 'Our Father'; so everyone standing around Him would have recognised this opening line
    to put it simply, Christ was preaching the very reason why He was on the Cross to everyone around Him; both the mockers and the disciples - and if you follow Psalm 22 to the closing line, you see a declaration of God being vindicated and the Righteous One 'not' being forsaken, but triumphant since 'He has done it!'
    ... this cry of victory being echoed by Christ's last words before giving up His Spirit; 'It Is Finished!'
    ~
    tragic that such intelligent people are so dismissive of opposing views that they don't even engage with the material

    • @weavehole
      @weavehole 7 років тому +2

      Where in Psalm 22 does it mention hands and feet being pierced? Deuteronomy 21_22 mentions hanging from a tree...? Is that what you meant or is my book incomplete? Also it wasn’t written centuries before crucifixion was invented as best as I can tell. Centuries before the Romans used it maybe.
      The reference to the first and last lines of the psalm would make sense though. Only in two of the gospels though of course.

      @meu02136 7 років тому

      Eh?

    • @ChristyOFaghan
      @ChristyOFaghan 7 років тому

      the first historical record of crucifixion comes from 519 BC when the Persian king Darius 1st had 3000 opponents killed - according to the historian Herodotus
      (cf. Herodotus, Hist. i.128.2; iii.132.2, 159.1)
      this was later employed by Alexander the Great, and 'perfected' by the Romans to include a process of flagellation beforehand which so stripped the victims of their skin that there are several mentions of their bowels falling out - the whip in use, being made to both expose the nerve endings and bring blood vessels to the surface
      Psalm 22 was written around 1000BC and contains the verses in 16 - 17
      16. For dogs encompass me;
      a company of evildoers encircles me;
      they have 'pierced my hands and feet'
      17. I can count all my bones-
      they stare and gloat over me...
      the later verse of being able to count one's bones is a reference to the flagellation which removed the skin
      as i said, there are numerous comparisons between the Psalm and the accounts of the crucifixion of Christ, such as the casting lots for His clothing - i would suggest you take the time to look at it yourself, and then add to that study a reading of Isaiah 52 and 53 which describes the 'Suffering Servant' who atones for Sin, who is 'high and lifted up' on the cross, his figure so marred as to be beyond recognition, by the flagellation
      ... and it should be noted that Isaiah was written around 700BC - again, some centuries before crucifixion became a practice
      ~
      BTW: your mention of Deut 21:22 is not misplaced - for God declared back then that anyone hung on a tree is under a curse, and we would hold that when God become Man; Christ Jesus, was on the cross receiving the punishment for Sin, He was most definitely under God's curse at that time
      ... this reference in Deuteronomy being another prophetic insight into what must happen to the Anointed One who would take away the Sins of the world
      ~

      Oh I see, you’re using a dodgy translation. KJV??
      Regardless, even if it were an accurate English translation it would show nothing more than the humans who wrote the first accounts of Jesus’s death decades afterwards wanted to make it match older verses they were familiar with.
      In the words of George Lucas: "it’s like poetry, it rhymes".
      I’ve got a bad feeling about this. Etc etc
