Glenn Miller Orchestra - Moonlight Serenade

- "Moonlight Serenade" is an American popular song with original music by Glenn Miller and subsequent lyrics by Mitchell Parish. It was originally named "Now I Lay Me Down To Weep." When Miller recorded "Sunrise Serenade" in 1939, he placed this song on the back. It was an immediate phenomenon as an instrumental arrangement and was adopted as Miller's signature tune.
The most striking part of the piece was its use of clarinet-led saxophone section, which is widely considered the classic Glenn Miller style. The first eight bars of the melody follow the form of the 12-bar blues. The song is a premier example of the American big-band sound from the mid-twentieth century.
I heard someone say this about this song and I wholeheartedly agree with it: "This makes me nostalgic for an era I wasn't even alive for."
My father loved this song and now it brings tears to my eyes as I realize today would be his 96th birthday. A WW2 veteran and part of the greatest generation. God bless everyone from that era
Agree, mine would have been 100 last month, and I still miss him so!
GOD BLESS HIM TOO
@@kellyforte2611 My Dad was a WWII vet, also. He fought in The Battle of the Bulge. Died at age 93. God bless all our Dads. This was my Mom's ( ohev shalom- RIP ) favourite song.
Прекрасная музыка
My Dad’s too, spent three and a half years in the South Pacific. You’re absolutely right, they were the greatest generation.
everyone always relates this music to their grandparents...sure...it came from their era but really this music is purly timeless...i love it
I totally agree! Today's WANNA-BE MUSICIANS should learn from this! They should think twice before calling themselves Artists.GOD BLESS GLEN MILLER!!!!
I love the movie about him played by Jimmy Stewart in "The Glenn Miller Story" with June Allyson and Harry Morgan. What a great movie...very sad at the end. No one could've done a better job playing Miller's character than Jimmy.
That is one vote from me for this music.
Completely agree! ❤
My uncle was a part of the Glenn Miller Orchestra for at least 10 years, I believe. He recently passed away. So it was really nice being able to see/hear this video of him playing with the Orchestra. He's in the middle row, 2nd trombone player when looking from left to right. At 0:52 they show a close up ❤ RIP uncle Cary. I love you!
Wow.
How fortunate for you to see your uncle playing some of the world’s best music with one of the world’s greatest orchestras! ♥🇺🇸♥
What an amazing story!
My dad died in 2004 at the age of 83 and loved this song. He was a world war two vet and loved this country so much. As I get older it makes me realize more each day how proud I am of my father and all those who lived in that era and are now gone... it's really sad because they are almost all gone now. If you see a WW II vet (or even your grandfather who may not have been in the service), give him a hug and thank him. Life is short, and then all we have are memories like this song to make us cry
Miller's Moonlight Serenade is timeless. Pure magic.
I LOVE THE SOUND OF GLENN MILLER 'S MUSIC HE WILL BE LISTENED TO FOREVER. ANGELA ARNOLD.
@@angelaarnold3740 If Only They would play this music now
La adoro questa musica ❤
My 100 year old mom will be dancing to this tune at her grandson's wedding next week. What a blessing!!!! A moment I will treasure forever as will my son and mother. This is her and my dad's favorite song- Moonlight Serenade .

(Serenade in the Valley of the Sun)
105 now bless
How was it ? 💗
Number one on my list of romantic songs... and it doesn't require someone singing the word 'love' once.
One of the most beautiful songs ever. The melody is forever in your heart once you hear it.
I think in this same way...
Absolutely LOVE it. Music from the war years is something that never fails to 'get me'. I'm a youngster at 35, but I think music from this period has a vitality that is magnetic.
Commenting to bring you back to this masterpiece ❣️
If America had a theme song during WWII, this was it. It is romantic and bittersweet and could make even the hardest vet a little melancholy.
No music will ever be as good as this. That's why I love WWII music
This haunting music Is wonderful. Way before my time but I could listen to it all day. It is like velvet. It will never die. Thank you Glen Miller. ❤
This music takes us back to the time when a great pleasure of adolescence was for a boy and a girl or a man and a wife to go dancing to such romantic music. This song in particular taught the heart that the healthiest families were created by a couple who married motivated by "True" love which covers all the bases from the spiritual to the physical.
Amen. Well said it.. amazing how we have changed.
Yes
True Love
I'm not from this time period at all. But this is the soundtrack of my life. I play in my head. With all the memories what a trip
This beautiful music brings up images of all the precious people in their 80s, 90s and older who love to share wonderful stories....we are losing these treasures fast and need to write down their memories ♡
This was the opening song at my wedding when I was 21 in 1989 :-) Glen Miller and his Band gave me goosebumps then and in 2020, still does.. beautiful.
Music doesn't get any better than this
Yeah! 😀
In my opinion, this is Glenn Miller's best composition...Sooo beautiful and exquisite.
I think it's his only composition. He did not compose his other hit's.
I agree, your words describe it beautifully.

Who wrote the others then? 😂
@@horaciocapanelli-soto47102 years ago you said something rude but also stupid. Other people wrote them. I hope you've taken to looking it up instead of making fun of people.
Imagine to be able to hear this live! Where have the orchestra days gone? My husband and I go to the Grand Hotel every year to get away and dance to the classics. They have a jazz band we enjoy and this song always takes me away. Truly the greatest generation. ❤
Just buried my grandfather to this song. This song will now remind me of him and his kind heart whenever I hear it.
I also buried my grandpa to this song. I have the same feelings than you...
This is 80 years old... let that sink in
The most beautiful music I ever heard
Mauricio Sambinelli
I played this for my fathers funeral its unfortunate the greatest generation is leaving us and what is this place going to be like when my grand children are my age
Ellis Gore I agree with you. It seems like our culture is decaying so rapidly. So many things that were so wonderful are likely to be lost to the RAP generation. How sad.
You are right, what IS in store for our g kids?
This song will always bring tears to my eyes. This is pure romance made into a song. So beautiful. Loving. Timeless.
This song will always be a classic
When my mother passed away she left me everything being the only child among her stuff was Glen Miller Record Box Collection plus a Glen Miller LP Record if all the songs this has to be my most favourite someone said the collection was only worth $30 its not the money its the sentimental value the music my mother and everyone in that era listened and danced to its priceless
September 2019 and still an unforgettable song!!
I was one of the grandparents that danced to this beautiful music it brings back so many memories I miss having a dance partner but maybe can get back into the groove.
Thank you for the memories
Classic melody!! Just beautiful in every way!!
Maravilhosa!!
Whenever I hear a Glenn Miller tune, I think of my mother. She grew-up during that era & LOVED his music.
I love this song, exquisite melody 💕🎵🎵
Undying music of Glenn Miller.
Dancing to Glenn Miller Orchestra's beautiful rendition of this song last night was bittersweet for me too…my man and I are getting older. We are reminded to cherish every moment. Thanks for this very special one.
One of my most loved pieces of music. I had the privelege of dancing to this band with my husband in 1967. I was 27 yrs. old and I must admit that this certainly was a thrill of a life time. I only wished that I could dance again to this band. My husband is gone but I would have another memory of this music. Thank you. Virginia from Midland, Pa.
Wonderful composition for all times !!
absolutely love this music, my heart melts everytime I hear it! I believe I'm an old soul from this Era!
My Grandfather's favorite band! ❤️✌🏼
I completely agree my husband died march 19th 2019 and l miss him terribly and he played tenor sax in the Mick iUrry Orchestra and sometimes he would have a break and we would have a dance and yes it was romantic . We had a wonderful marriage and full of music. I now have a lovely legacy consisting of 4 children 9 grand and 12 great grandchildren with 2 more on the way. They are all full of love and happy. If music be the food of love play on l say. Eastbourne in july they have swing bands that come and play and last year on the anniversary of my husband and l meeting on a blind date on a very rainy night 11th july 1957. We spent 62 wonderful years together. Long live the swing bands l say!!!
I was privileged to play this in high school. Still the best memories of my life. The most fun I ever had. Sadly....
Still loving it 2021 and I'm only 51 years old. Lovely.......I miss you nanny and papa!!
I grew up with the Big Band Era music. My dad absolutely loved it. And so do I. Glenn Miller is my favorite of all those bands. I've seen the movie so many times that I can't even count, even bought the DVD. "In The Mood" just makes me want to get up and dance, but my favorite is "Moonlight Serenade". His band does a great job of playing his music, but I hear some differences from when he played. It's a shame we never got to hear other 'sounds' he might have created.
The soprano clarinet lead above the alto and tenor sax's is sweet, lush and beautiful. The accompanying brass and rhythm section only further sweeten the harmonically rich mix. One of the most lovely, heartfelt and elegant songs in American history; a true metaphor for the "greatest generation".
Whenever I hear this, it takes me back to that Golden Girls episode in the dancehall.....RIP Bea Arthur and Estelle Getty. You are missed sorely.
I'm 61 years old, a child of the 70's love 70's music, o have young children for my age, a son 22 and a daughter 18, who also love 70's music but when I hear music from the 30's and 40's it just for some reason touches my heart, I joke about it with my kids and say I was reincarnated lol
I was an adopted child, adopted out at 2 years old, maybe my birth mother or grandmother listened to it and I remember it from. them.
This Brings me back to the days when we could go to our favorite club with big bands.and we also went to the YMCA on a Sat nite also big bands.its a shame they don't have the great times we had.
Looks like those days are over. Sorry, great loss.
Ive heard this in the background of so many tv shows and movies and today i finally found out what its called. this is great music!
Yesss..the best ! I love this sound...like a wind in the sky...clouds and blue in my mind
Maravilhoso!!!! Lembro de meus pais, e eu com 6 anos de idade. Muito obrigado.
B8n demais
Everytime i hear this song, my heart skipped a beat..the melody its so heart melting
COME SI Fà A NON SOGNARE CON QUESTA MUSICA MERAVIGLIOSA
I love this precious melody
Reminds me of my grandfather. We always listened to glenn miller while driving through the streets.
Kennmelodie Musik zum träumen - meine schönsten Erinnerungen an die Tanzschulzeit 1958 -1962
This piece of music is responsible for me being here today. It was my parents first dance, in the late 50s. I grown up listening to Glenn Miller's records. I'm grateful to him for my existence. :)
My parents would dance to this when it came on the radio and when it was over I believe they were misty-eyed,I know why now. Wonderful-ah-wonderful, or is that some one else.?
Bruce Nuckowski I recall my parents having the same sentiments with this song, and many others from that era. There truly were many great bands and great songs from that time.
Still a wonderful song !! Now, I'm alone... dancing in my kitchen on my own... remembering those evenings dancing with my dear father... such a long way ago. Sorry for the mistakes I wrote; I'm a 61-year Flemish women and learned a little bit Englisch from the BBC. THANK YOU w347h3r3pOr7 !!!
I can play this song on the clarinet just like this soloist. I truly love this song. 💚💚
I love moonlight serenade it reminds me of my father who I absolutely adored, I miss him every day
essa música não perde o seu brilho!! Amo!!
So beautiful, good American music. My father used to play this on our record player when I was growing up, and now, he plays it on a CD in the car. This was the song he and my sister danced to at her wedding too :) I wasn't born until way after Glenn Miller's time, but listening to this makes me feel like I'm right there.
Always a great song will arrive when the old world needs it and this is just one of them. I cannot wait to hear what great music we will have In HEAVEN. AMEN 🙏
What a legend ,It is an immortal music ,Well the late GLENN MILLER will be proud of it....
This song makes me laugh and cry, it´s sooo beautifully played and the tune is timeless!
J'AI UN COUP DE COEUR POUR CETTE COMPOSITION ET CE COMPOSITEUR MERCI MONSIEUR MILLER
There will never be another Glen Miller. Absolutely LOVE his timeless music. Clean and not offensive in any way.
You know, I just lost my last living uncle a couple years ago in Riverside, he and my Aunt were married for over 50 years, he and my father were very close and all of them are gone now. I listened to shi song after his funeral and I could see all 4 of them dancing to this song in one of those big ballrooms from the 40's. What beautiful horn work in this song. Ageless & timeless too.
what a beautiful video. My dad loved Glenn Miller and other bigband stuff...when I play this, I just cry. Damn, I miss my parents.
WOW. As a saxophone player, I played this and many others "in the day". I agree with so many others who have commented, this music will never die and can not be recreated.
Wow So beautiful. I wish we had live music like this still. Vs what we listen to today imagine dancing in here 😍😍😍
This is real music
"Touche"
Chuck Pearson YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!!!
Many of the tunes from the 30'sand the war years were superb; but his is most certainly one of the very best. I grew up listening to them as my parents played this music. Both are gone now and dancing to them again with Glenn Miller!
I second that! This music is simply the best music to relax in the world!
The greatest big band orchestra ever
Timeless Beauty!!
y dad absolutely loved this he passed in august 2007 its just magnificent music so soothing I can see how he loved it
I listened to this song every night at 11pm lying on bed with a transistor radio beside me and a large glass of coffee beside me when I was a teenager in the 70's. This was the opening song for the radio programme called, "Soothing Sounds" on Singapore radio. The usual staples were from the Platters, Dusty, Lettermen, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra. Whenever I listen to this song, it brings back everything about me as a teenager. Of course, Ozzy was there too.
Che musica. Rapisce anche il cuore. This music touches my heart too …
Romanticismo puro. Sin dudas. Tiempos inolvidables
Greatest musician in USA His musics still pray in all of the world
This was Gleen Millers' presentation.
Moonlight Serende. Thousands times
I have listen to this song and always I will like it more than the time before/
God bless you Glen
this music touches my heart
Ahhhh, magnificent. My mom grew up in that time-period, and we were fortunate in hearing that stuff on her records, when I was a kid. Truly timeless.
You are too right brother. Nice to see another young person who knows what real music is.
This kind of music need to listen whole world. So relaxing and beautiful!
My dad also..memoriws were not the best, but I could see a far away look in his eyes everytime he listened to Glenn Miller..the memories of the 40s must have run deep.
The lights are dimmed. Glenn announces the "last song of tonight". You look around the room for that person you want to share it with. Then you say "good Night" while dancing to MoonLight Serenade. Ahhhhh great memories
I was born during this era. Ooh but how I love this music.
I played this tune in highschool as a member of The Ferris High School Jazz Orchestra.
No better music on earth......Rest in peace, your music lives for ever..............
Zelda
i'm mid 30's and mt dad was born in 1931 and i grew up listening to glenn miller and all the big bands elvis etc every time i hear this music reminds me of my long gone dad but its amazing how a certain smell taste or noise can bring long gone memories flooding back just like it was yesterday!!
EXCELENTE interpretación una de las piezas más románticas que he escuchado.
Wonderful wonderful...... a masterpiece
I wish more radio stations played this type of music. I am glad to see that more young people are discovering the warm, soothing sounds of big band. It is hard to enjoy the highly commercialized music that tends to dominate the airwaves today. Very little of it will be as eternal as Glenn Miller.
I love to dance under GM music
My mother in law loved this song. So did my parents.
Always was my favourite of the Swing Era; and some pretty nice comments below from Glenn's eternal legion of fans.
