    22:50 The Chevrolet Volt was a really early version of the Range extending hybrid. For city traffic it would only run electric but highway speeds it could use both engines. Like many before, I think Chevrolet failed in properly marketing the Volt because it was the same idea, range extender hybrid with a battery large enough for most commutes. See Technology Connections video about the car.

    Missed one of the best parts of the Edison Logging trucks. They essentially have battery chargers at the top of the mountains ( trees/extra weight) . Go up empty, come down full and regen the batteries all the way down. It's like earths stored energy .

      I really liked my Volt.
      The discussion in the video reminded me of a conversation with a BMW i3 owner. He had chosen the i3 with range extender because its gas motor served purely as a generator, whereas in some circumstances the Volt's gas engine could directly power the wheels.

    • @callumcurtis15
      @callumcurtis15 Місяць тому +2

      @@mchapman87501 So I'm actually wrong then I thought the Gas motor was purely a generator in the Volts with no mechanical connection to the wheels for some reason.
      I guess that leaves the I3 as being the only real production series hybrid like the Edison truck. I feel like the manufactures need to go back to basics with the Gas engine to make it simple and light, besides if it is only used as a generator it could be manufactured and tuned to work in a very narrow RPM and Power band .

      @@callumcurtis15I could swear there was at least one hybrid out there where it was an electric motor with a battery that was being charged by a gas engine.

    • @Snerdles
      @Snerdles 29 днів тому

      @@callumcurtis15The main problem is that series hybrid is far less efficient than just driving the wheels with the engine. This is one of the primary reasons vehicles like the Outlander, that only drives the wheels through a single speed transaxle and clutch is very specific scenarios are far less efficient than something like a RAV4 Prime which has the planetary gear set that they call an eCVT.
      Turns out turning something with the engine that generates electricity to store in a battery and then extracting that energy to turn the wheels is way less efficient than just having the engine turn the wheels.
      Even just comparing the Outlander to something like the Kia Sorenton PHEV, once out of battery power the Outlander is rated 26mpg combined, the Sorento 34mpg combined. The Sorento uses a traditional automatic, not even a dual clutch.

    regarding modularity in cars, I think the Volt used all electric motors for under 50ish mph. Then a clutch engaged the engine to the powertrain at higher speeds. I had a 2003 Civic Hybrid that 'technically' could run the transmission on just it's battery. Not designed that way, but at *very* low loads like crawling at 5mph in traffic I could get the electric power side to drive the powertrain before the engine would kick in. Any significant throttle would bring in the gas engine though.

    • @RoninHard
      @RoninHard Місяць тому +1

      I think the volt drove on all electricity and just used the fuel to generate electricity to drive the car and provide recharge to the battery. Of course, I could be mis-interpreting the info I read. Here is what Wikipedia says:
      The Volt operates as a pure battery electric vehicle until its battery capacity drops to a predetermined threshold from full charge. From there, its internal combustion engine powers an electric generator to extend the vehicle's range as needed. While running on gasoline at high speeds the engine may be mechanically linked (by a clutch) to a generator set, improving efficiency by 10% to 15%.

    • @Snerdles
      @Snerdles 29 днів тому

      My Hyundai Ioniq runs the engine as a generator in certain conditions and has a dual clutch 6 speed mated to the engine to drive the wheels in others.
      For example, it uses the engine for heat but the battery to drive when the battery temp is above -15C. So if it's right around freezing the engine will be running idling to heat the cabin but if you accelerate the engine RPM doesn't change since only the motor drives the wheels.
      It just has a separate clutch to either connect or disconnect the engine from the primary 6 speed dual clutch transmission.

    Diesel electric, is not a new idea but the application for semi tractor trailers innovative.
    Union Pacific RR announced purchasing 20 battery operated locomotives, For Union Pacific where they pulled through the Rocky Mountains and use dynamic braking for long periods of time burning off electricity through large resistors the application of storing energy seems natural, particularly as direct cost increased.

    Hi Matt/Sean, sorry I am one of those parasocial people (parasocialite?) who ran up to Matt at the Vancouver show and started blathering on about his heat pump. But for those of us trying to zero out our houses it’s like meeting Taylor Swift and Jesus all rolled into one. I was inspired to update my heat pump based on Matt’s recommendations and am about to get a Rheem heat pump water tank which you’ve already done an episode on. So when I ran up to you I tried to go fast so as not to waste too much of your time as you looked very busy, but the result is probably alarming, sorry about that. The Mitsubishi rep got it worse as I complained at length about their appalling software controls on an otherwise excellent system. As I said to you and Ricky, I am really hoping to see you two together doing another house comparison episode. I am in the Ricky camp, having to fix an old inefficient mess. Thanks for coming up to Canada again, hopefully next year you get to go for a spin in the electric floatplane, the takeoff/landing in the harbour in those planes is insane and they don’t crash (very often). And bring Sean, lots of maple syrup up here. Cheers.

    The electricity generated by a motor that creates electricity to drive electric motors is called a Chevy Volt. There have been these types of vehicles throughout history. In fact, this is how train engines work. They are called diesel electric because the diesel is used in an engine to generate electricity that is then sent to electric motors that turn the wheels. They have been using this for decades (I know this because I used to work for Burlington Northern railroad and have seen them).

    Betamax was a better product in terms of resolution, but what consumers actually wanted was the ability to record a whole football game, which betamax couldn't do, so "better" is contextual.

    The Out of Spec UA-cam channel had a BMW I3 that had a range extender engine in it. I have always thought that if you could tune the engine to just generate electricity that would be the better use in a hybrid vehicle.
    I’m curious to know if there are any energy companies such as coal and gas that are using electric to reduce their carbon footprint. Would electrifying the trucks that haul gasoline around have a large impact on that industry even if it’s not 100% electric.

    Checkout the channel Electric Trucker.
    He drives 42 metric tons electric trucks on long haul throug europe using truck charging stations but mostly car charging stations with up to 350kW. The limiting factor is almost always the allowed driving time and not the battery range.
    He just started the english version, but the german version Elektrotrucker went through the roof. He became the prophet of EV enthusiasts within a month. It is expected, that due to TCO calculations, more electric trucks are sold then diesel trucks in 2030, in europe.

    what I find interesting / odd is that many large ships have been using this "hybrid" configuration for years. Generators that produce power which is then used to spin electric motors for propulsion. It does seem like a fairly easy thing to implement, so I'm kind of surprised that hybrid trucks weren't more of a thing sooner, as it makes much more sense than trying to utilize purely EV tech in big equipment where the charging locations would be limited. (Though I'm not actually "surprised" that it takes the US forever to change anything.)
    I was wondering if you heard about the Tesla semi that caught fire in California. I have a feeling Li-ion batteries are going to be around for a while. As such, stories like this are going to become more common. It would have been tremendously worse if this fire happened in the middle of a city, and/or next to a school. Wont somebody please think of the children?!! (said in my best/worst Helen Lovejoy voice) Is there any technology being looked at for fighting Li-ion fires?

    • @mike_realityi
      @mike_realityi Місяць тому

      As I understand there is no way to fight a Lithium Ion Fire for the batteries that use the NMC chemistry (Tesla Semi). The only way to stop it is to allow it to end is to allow it to run it's course or dump it into a massive amount of water, pool or pond, in order to cool off the battery.
      There are 1/2 a dozen different Lithium Ion Battery Chemistries out there so it's not right to lump them all into the same group as not all the Lithium Ion batteries will catch fire like the Tesla Semi.
      The Truck company that Matt forgot the name of, Edison Motors, is using a Lithium Ion battery that uses Lithium Iron Phosphate Batteries. These batteries will not have the same issue as seen in the Tesla Semi as they can not have the same ability to perform Thermal Runaway.
      Edison Motors is Based out of Canada and they are saying that same thing about how the hybrid system has been used for years in Trains. They have regenerative breaking. You can plug the truck in and charge off the grid too if you want. As Matt mentioned the Edison Motors truck can have the Generator swapped out but even more impressive is if you don't want the Generator you can simply add a 3rd battery pack in it's place.

    The bigger battery and generator thing is exacly what PHEVs are... Almost all PHEVs have multiple drive methods. Motor only, gas as a generator, combined gas/motor drive, and gas only drive in most cases every PHEV can run in all of these where each is most efficient.
    You know, those same vehicles all you EVangelists rail on because they are the worst of both worlds over and over. There is nothing stopping someone from swapping an engine in an Outlander for a hydrogen fuel cell generator beyond cost and practicality. It's exaclty what these so called 'innovative' modular hybrid trucks are.
