Justin, I use to live in the mountains of New Mexico. Our home took 21 cords of wood a year to heat. I also use to work for the Arizona Forest Service thinning trees. I've even helped fight a couple of forest fires. Just wanted to let you know that I do have some experience in this field and the reason for this comment is to suggest that all that lumber that you have cut down and put on the side of the road that you move to a different location as soon as possible. The reason for that is is that is a forest fire red flag. All of the thinning out and opening up the pastures that you're doing is absolutely fantastic. Because not only helps you with more grazing land but it also helps cut down on overgrown Forest that can get out of hand really quick when they're overgrown. I totally understand that with over 70 acres of wooded forest that it's going to be a huge overwhelming task, but the forest around your home is unbelievably thick and overgrown. At this point any forest fire that starts on any part of your property is going to take out everything. Tree thinning is an absolute must and as you have said it will help you with your wood supply and wood chips. Another thing that tree thinning also helps with his predators. Absolutely love overgrown for us because that gives them plenty of places to hide.
I had no idea Justin was the inspiration behind you! I've followed you both for 5ish years...9 years after my homestead experience from The School of Hard Knocks! Now in my 60's I'm still learning and still growing. As I putz around in my gardens, you can hear me mumbling, "what's growing on?"!
Like you mentioned it’s all a case by case basis, but perimeter fences I think are important. Especially if a bull get outs and your in a state where your liable. If the bull gets out
Wow! Pete I watch the Rhodes all the time and seriously I have never heard this very concise information download from Justin and Rebecca. Thank you. I am from a very large family as well and their videos are exactly like the sounds and life that I grew up with. Thanks. Blessings. 🌞🌱❤️
Been learning so much from Justin's family as well as Pete's family! Sprinkle a little David the Good's family, and that's all the knowledge you need to be completely self- sufficient.
@@markrodrigue9503 I'll take that as a nice, fun troll. ! I knew I laid out a HUGE risk when I made the comment🤣😂😁For some reason I still take those risks--I am slow to learn.😁 Cheers !
I have never understood why Justin does not use permanent fencing. I know now !! Makes sense for his situation, growing up with cattle, we always had permanent paddocks and life seemed a lot easier. They sure spend a lot of time moving fence !! Excellent video production on this video, Pete ! Your best yet 👊
We also had permanent fencing when we raised Back Angus and that is the norm around here too but seeing the depleted pastures and the mess along the fencelines, movable fencing, and the ability to mow, keeping saplings down and the weeds and tall grasses down make movable fences so much more practical and flexible, plus healthier cattle a win-win in my book. Sometimes I want to stop, knock on their door and say dang it man, watch a Greg Judy or Justin, or Joel Salatin video and see just how much better their system is and how much better and healthier their pastures look without that ring around the hay and ankle-deep mud/doo-doo you force the cattle to stand in!
8:30 Growing my food at home has meant I spent less on food each year since the pandemic, despite inflation. Everyone should try to grow something, even if it's windowsill herbs.
We're currently looking into smaller generators after what happened to Texas in 2021 and the deep freeze of 7 days. Also looking to get deep freezers to store whole pigs and half cows. I totally get what he explains.
We recently bought a 20 acre parcel with plans to use only about 8 acres of it, so it's wonderful to see what Justin has done with just 10 of his large acreage.
Isn't Justin the guy...or one of the guys...that first got you interested on the UA-cam "regular" video train track ?? Maybe I recall that wrong...but the rest here is History ! 😁😁🤗😊
Loved him in the beginning... he's so used car salesman like now... no thanks... had to unsubscribe when he started making videos of his son in the hospital...putting all his kids business out there... no thanks... your kids pain is not content. Turn off the camera and be in the moment...be a dad... every video has turned into an abundance plus commercial too
@@jujube2407 but if he is at the hospital what content is he gonna post he is not at the home stead and a large portion of subs wanted to know his progress kinda n a way it can help homesteaders that this happen to their kids so they don’t totally freak out and others might be on the fence about buying dirt bikes that might help them make up their minds one way or the other but I feel you but remember this is his bread and butter
I love these visits. I’ve been following you since Justin talked you into producing your own channel and the visit with Justin to Jim. Your energy is infectious, when are you coming to pound dirt with us in the UK? Lots of people doing good stuff here too. Thanks for these great videos.
Wow, Justin is the man to give credit to for your efforts on UA-cam, that’s cool! Thanks Justin….Thanks Pete! Always enjoy seeing what’s growing on and the fast pace of info as your narrative. Very useful info..
This was awesome! I saw you for the first time when Justin was teaching your daughter how to milk a cow and you helped clear their forest. Really impressed with the interviews and the drone footage!! Thanks so much.......I subsribed.
Been waiting for like a week or so since I seen you on Justin’s video at the beginning of December can’t wait I know there will be some great drone footage of the property and the land clearing for silvopasture will be epic

Rabbits are great for fertilizer as their poop can be put directly on the garden with no dry out time which has to be done with Chicken poop. Also the rabbit meat can be fed to your meat eating guard dogs. It also takes time for the rabbits to learn how to procreate and the mom rabbit has to learn how to take care of her babies. Once they are older they will have more babies than you know what to do with. I never buy fertilizer anymore with both rabbits and chickens we are set. 👍 Merry Christmas and happy New Year.
Your family is great, I've been watching for years. Did you ever look at building a Ram Pump for your stream? I've never built one myself, but I guess they can pump water fairly high uphill from the stream with just the flow of the stream for pressure. They look pretty easy to build just a couple one-way valves, pipe to run where you want it to go and some different sizes for the pump and a couple fittings. You've probably heard of them just thought I'd mention it in case. Merry Christmas to you all.
Irony...Justin: Get the food off the trucks. Also Justin: bring in the compost on trucks, let the masters do it. But it smells like rubber and I'm scared of it. LOL It's good to see the animals ruminating, because that means they are satisfied. That's a management win.
So glad you took the challenge! Your work has been fantastic. Thanks Justin for inspiring Pete who showed us Jim and some incredible places and projects inthe hisown realm. Thank you both!
