The Director had intended a final scene where the older brother is seen shaving his head, and going back to racism. But, Edward Norton refused and wanted to project a more hopeful message.
The line from his teacher “Has anything you’ve done, made your life better?” is so fucking powerful. It has stuck in my mind since the first time I watched this movie when it was a new release. It’s such an important question and one everyone should ask themselves.
@@fanta4897 it's not the only question that is important. But it is the question that makes you start analyzing and questioning the belief system that led you to make the choices that you have so far. Its not thw only but it is the base question that stems the other lines of thought.
@@robertcampomizzi7988 I have a different perspective on it. I think that questioning if it's good for you can be in some cases the right question, however not all things that are comfortable are good. Some things you don't do for betterment of your life, but because you believe they're right thing to do. And so in this case, nationalist that gets harrassed for his opinions (there are many who recieved death threats, or who were thrown out of job or school because of their opinions, or who were out right attacked and killed or mutilated, like that guy in Germany few years back who got his ankles smashed by hammer) should answer that his choices didn't make his life better, but he doesn't neccessarily think about his life as the primary goal, and prefers having a worse life than giving up his opinions which he thinks are not only correct, but good and righteous.
@@fanta4897 yea, i pretty much agree... i have a different perspective on your perspective tho, i believe that being comfortable does not make your life better.
@@vini_nicius643 That's another thing. But it also depends on what you view as comfortable. Someone might consider sitting all day on couch as comfortable, while someone else would consider toiling in the gym and the subsequent satisfaction as comfortable.
Derek’s character arc is well-written, but I don’t think it would have come across nearly as well if it weren’t for Norton’s performance, he is able to convey the changes in the character so well, especially post-prison. It’s definitely in the vein of some of the great performances of the 1970s from actors like Pacino and DeNiro
Derek only got 3 years because his brother refused to testify against him and there were no other witnesses. If he had he would've been in jail for the rest of his life.
@@JohnnyGingy Except for the very reason depicted in the movie. Derek was reformed when he got out. He had a completely changed outlook on life, and he was able to start making a positive influence on his family and brother. If he had been in jail for the rest of his life he likely would have gotten shanked in jail, his brother would have turned into a neo-nazi, and his family would have continued on the path of destruction. People really need to step back from these situations and realize that society should never let the seductive flavor of punative measures over-ride the whole point of prison. - Protect society from dangerous individuals, and more importantly REFORM those individuals.
@@OpenMawProductions any human that curb stomps another human should never have another free day on this earth. I don’t how reformed you are. The original ending was supposed to have Derek return to his old gang after his brother was murdered.
@@JohnnyGingy Again, that comes from emotion, not logic. If a person demonstrates a fundamental change in their behavior and shows they have reformed and overcome whatever motivated the hateful acts they committed in their past, they should be forgiven and allowed to try. I don't think you understand what being locked up is really like, and I hope you never do. People who glibly think it's a good idea to lock people up for the rest of their lives do so from a standpoint of pure emotion. We don't, and never have, thrown people in jail to simply punish them. That's not what the justice system is designed for. The goal is to teaech a lesson, yes, and that lesson is in the loss of fundamental freedom for a short time. The other more important goal is to reform individuals so that they can come back into society as productive members. That's exactly what happened here. Why are you bringing up something that wasn't in the film to support the claim? Edward Norton, who edited the release version of the movie, totally disagreed with that ending, which is why it isn't in the movie. As far as the movie is concerned we have no idea what happened after his brother died. None.
Edward Norton is one hell of an actor. In a 4 year period he played a jacked skin head lead character AND a goofy Barney the Dinosaur-type lead character and he CRUSHED both roles.
@@prometheus705 It's become trendy to say Fight Club is overrated, but that film is wide open to multiple levels of interpretation, with each level being host to people who look down on the lower academic levels (often without seeing the levels above them, where other academics are looking down on them, too). And at the end of the day, the author was right about there being virtually no movies that really speak on the male experience. There are endless streams of movies that show what a "real man" ought to be (hero, provider, fighter, savior, good father, etc.), and there are men who either do or don't fill those ideal roles (one protagonist who learns something), but there aren't any movies that really speak on how men think of themselves and each other as they grow through adulthood. Every year, for women, there are "Joy Luck Clubs" or "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pantses" or "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood"... for men, it stops after coming-of-age movies like American Pie and then poof... we're all Bruce Willis saving a skyscraper or a bumbling dad learning to not suck at life. So yeah, people will criticize Fight Club for the fact that men really identify with it on a deep level (for reasons they may not be able to fully verbalize), but the fact that it does is something of a statement itself.
Isn’t it amazing how much a 2 hour movie can make you feel. Anger, disgust, happiness, humor, horror, sadness and heartache all while learning an important lesson. One of the best reactions to this movie I’ve seen!
Including people who drink bottled water?... ;-) It is a major environmental issue, especially since UK tap water is cleaner than bottled water which was the hilarious thing about Dasani. They took water from the grid, added minerals to the point where it wouldn't be legal to use in the taps. Mostly I'm just taking the mic, but have you ever tried a filter system? It still adds some cost on top of the taps, but is generally less damaging than bottled water.
Derek Vinyard is one of the most frightening characters in a movie. Hateful yet intelligent and charismatic. This film shows racism on a very realistic level… where it comes from and it’s repercussions. It also shows skinhead gang culture realistically too.
The Aussie film ‘Romper Stomper’ shows the gang culture you speak of. Russell Crowe’s greatest performance ever. The soundtrack won many awards and is extreme in its racist punk music. It is definitely a harder watch than American History X but it is an excellently well made film.
Actually it’s not skinheads it’s just Nazis. It’s kinda sad how the idea of skinheads got stolen bei fascist pigs and now everyone associates Skins with Nazis. Real Skinheads are anti racism and anti Facism
Just for reference; Skinhead culture isn't inherently racist. It started out in England as a way to take pride in your community and the Ska music that followed it was inspired by black caribbeans. It was only later that neo-nazis and racists would adopt the skinhead outfit and style. Look up SHARP (Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice).
You were right early on when you pointed out the two kids were influenced by groups and many people miss that in this movie and don't realize the black kids are trying to do a drive-by but they can never find them outside that's why it ultimately happens in the school bathroom
I saw this film as a kid when it had come out in the late 1990's and I cannot believe but appreciate how relevant this film still remains in 2022. Thank you guys for watching and reacting to it. It's an extremely important and well-done film.
The ending shows why it's so hard to break the cycle both young boys were influenced by their peers & elders & as hard as it is to get out of a gang whether it's a racial gang or whatever these things happen & draw you back in. Like we don't know but this could have hardened Derek who made a miraculous change
43:16 The kid wasn't killed because of whatever was going on with his brother, he was shot because of that little incident back in the first act. And that is yet another part of the problem.
@@jovanjorgovan23that would have been a good sequel because it would tell the story of how big of them got to where they got to. No one is born with hate. No one.
That kerb (curb) stomp has got to be one of the most violent things I have ever seen in a film. I’m glad you chose to review this movie. The message is even more important today, than it was 25 years ago. Keep up the great work. You guys are hilarious and insightful at the same time. Best wishes and respect from Philadelphia USA.
Literally one of the few things in life that I always avoid. I just mute UA-cam and look away until it is over. I only heard/seen it once, the day I saw it in the theatre.
Its objectively not, its also quite literally a propaganda piece that implies those whites who question the system their in are all mere skinheads rather than individuals who choose to see a different perspective. before you argue with me, what im saying is fact not opinion.
@@joelwillis2043 Same here. It's an extremely important scene to the film, but it's so horrific and violent that I just cannot stomach seeing or hearing it.
I'm honestly impressed by ashkans opinions and reactions! Standing by the thought of not giving up on people, educating etc! Agreed with all he said in this reaction!
You two, WTF! So much better than so many other channels, WHY? You make it personal, you react and talk about stuff and not just watch. 2 opinions, argue, discuss, resolve. Drinking to water in the beginning scene, you need to make movie out of your intros. They are so entertaining. 638 comments already, its like reading a book.
Caught this film when I was a teenager, and I'll never know the extent it impacted me because it's impossible to step out of one's experiences and see alternative eventualities, but thinking about it now, I feel like it probably informed a lot of my later views on violence and racism. Really powerful message delivered really subtly. A good watch for young men.
This is the most honest reaction I have ever seen. They go from shocked, confused, arguing, and apologizing to each other lol such a real reaction of how people watch movies together
Ash, you actually showed your intelligence in this one. Especially when you talked about how Racism is just tribalism, and all groups are tribalistic, even white groups against other white groups.
It's true. To listen to race-hustlers in America (of any skin color), you'd think there was more racism now than back in the 60's when there was literal segregation of blacks and whites. In reality, actual racism or racist acts are few and far between, yet some have been trained to think any slight against them (actual or perceived) is automatically racist (just as some women have been trained to do the same with the words "sexist" or "misogynist"), because that's what a race-hustler said on "the news."
@@softbigotry4058 How you can type this after a white kid shot up a supermarket in a predominantly black neighborhood just 1 day ago is hilariously sad. Racism is well and alive in this country. To try and downplay it, or get upset at people who talk about it makes no sense to me and the only people I see making these type of comments are racists themselves. - fellow white guy who is sick of this bullshit. and its not even just our country. Its everywhere.
@Jake And do you have any facts to substantiate your claims, or did you just make all that up, while using your skin color to pontificate about imaginary issues?
@Jake Lmao what are you talking about the norm? I lived in the hood for 15 years and then a mixed suburb for the past 8, none of my friends that are black ever complained about racism nor have any of my white friends yes it definitely happens but it’s not an everyday thing….
@Jake Oh, so you DID just make all that up to virtue signal on UA-cam, just as I suspected. Well here's my retort to your anecdotal "evidence" - I've lived in America for 35 years as a "POC", surrounded by equal parts white, black, and hispanic, and ACTUAL racism between any of these groups were...few and far between, just as I stated before. Thanks for your opinions (which are all they are) tho, Mr. White Savior. ;-)
I think the whole point of the movie is exactly what y’all were going back & forth about at the end. As human beings we have free will and can be as horrible or as great of a person as we want to be, and people do both. You can also decide to change at any moment and try to become a real man out of whatever monster lifestyle you were living. The only thing, like y’all said, your actions set other peoples actions in motion. And he was celebrated by the skinheads for those years he was locked up & couldn’t do anything about it. Once he gets out and starts trying to change, so many things are in motion that it’s just too late… Tragic but to me it’s a warning to live the right way all the time, and hopefully you don’t have to have some sort of epiphany to start doing right, because it could be too late by then. Your past can always catch up to you.
it would be really interesting to see a film from the young black shooter's perspective and how the hatred was passed on to him through the events that we see one side of and his revenge of the killing of his brother(or whomever the elder who was killed in the car theft attempt was to him).
@@mokane86 that would be really interesting. You can see in his eyes right after he shoots Danny that he knows his life is completely over. Never gonna have another free moment, EVER, once he’s in those cuffs. I couldn’t imagine. But a backstory to cover everything up to that point would work really well I think
Nearly everyone that watches this movie skips over the overt Black racism portrayed and where, at least according to the movie, the racial animosity was borne out of. Derek's firefighting father was killed by Black people while putting out a house fire in a Black neighborhood. And his father was pissed about White firefighters being passed over for promotion because of affirmative action. At no point in the movie do we ever see Danny do anything to anyone, yet he was racially bullied in the bathroom in the beginning and killed in the end. Also, the White kid in the beginning of the movie is thrown to the bathroom floor and kicked twice in the stomach while on the ground. So there was really nothing Danny could have done in his life that would have saved him from being the victim of racists.
@@jongordon7914 I watched the movie, so idk why you’re telling me this. Sure there was racism on both sides. But I don’t really see the point of typing all that out. Racism doesn’t justify turning into a murdering racist yourself. Also, Danny wasn’t completely innocent. His brother is in prison for a hate crime for which Danny obviously shows no remorse, and still runs with the same crowd. I distinctly remember him blowing smoke (almost as disrespectful as spitting in someone’s face) in some dudes faces in the same bathroom he got killed. There was bad blood on all sides. This weirdly sounds like you’re trying to justify something here when there’s almost nothing in this movie that can be justified. The criminal lifestyle and bullshit on both sides is wrong, but I guess you needed that typed out explicitly to not feel attacked.
I gotta tell you, that moment of love between you two during the most hateful scene ever put on film was really beautiful; Han apologizing for getting angry and ash re-apologizing for telling her to watch....it brought literal tears to my eyes. You guys are amazing.
Originally, the movie was supposed to end with Derek going back to his old friends after his brother is killed. Edward Norton hated the ending so much, he re-edited the entire thing and added like 20 minutes of run time to the film. Norton's ending, while still rather bleak, is much more hopeful. The final shot in the original was Edward Norton looking into a mirror, shaving his head. The director lost his shit over Norton's changes, disavowed the film entirely, and sued the studio for like $250 million.
Honestly i think this is the better ending, not only just because is more hopeful,is just because the other,in my opinion, will be dumb: during the film he knows a black guy that saves him in prison, he is raped by neonazis, the teacher helped him too, so i dont know man, it will be a bit stupid if he returned to be nazi, even with his brother dead
@@sc-wr3fj I'd assume his positive experience with the black dude is what was also added with those 20 minutes. If it just had been the rape and him being helped by the teacher that turned him around. Then it would be a quite powerful ending if he went back to the "people who raped him". That would've said "fuck all this moral high-roading and intellectualism, all it did for me was get my brother killed. I rather have an evil family that I belong to, than be a lonely good person.". As tragic but a hopeless ending instead of this hopeful one.
@@bajjanitor You have a good point but i think i prefer this ending because i think this movie is so raw and cruel (still one of my favourite movies btw) so the other scene would be completly depressing, the death of Danny is enough sad and the movie still being a solid and hard film, so having a bit of mercy with the spectator with the ending is fine for me hahaha
An important part of the film is that it could have been about Little Henry (the shooter at the end) & how he was being drawn into gang violence/culture, there were a few moments of foreshadowing with Danny meeting him after talking with Sweeney at the start & a little later on when Henry points him out to an older black man who was talking to him (The shooting was Henry's initiation into the gang, killing the brother of Derek Vinyard). So yes, the cycle continues & while the original ending had Derek going back to his old way, I prefer the more open ended finish of Danny's voiceover.
Cheers from Norway! :) One of the most pointed anti-racism movies ever made. I love how you both struggled trough it together, it's supposed to do something to you. All those emotions you're going through is a sign of health. Imagine emotionally cold people watching it, it even gets to them, it has to be a strong message like this. Love your dynamic, you are good people. Just so you know, evil like this is never simple it is always complex. Derek believes he's doing good even in the scene where he's arrested. One of my favorite movies of all time just because it hits so hard. Thanks for all the great reactions you two.
And i am sorry because i struggle to explain my point about this movie, but i get so happy when people younger thatn me realize what im feeling. The whole cancellation/woke thing is to simplistic, know what i mean? Monsters need to come into the light, only way to defeat it. We need talk, we need nuance. Sorry again hope you get my point, because i think this movie is the clearest representation of this i know.
you said it my friend...."...evil like this is never simple it is always complex". that is the usualy the concept that seems to be overlooked time and time again. you have awareness which is unfortunately lacking among many. cheers from idaho
I love how intelligent the dialog in this movie is. A lot of Derek's arguments have some genuinely good points to them, points that if explored correctly or debated with reason and understanding would help in discussions about social issues. However the character is so blinded by hate his intelligence is vastly hindered and no right minded person would listen to them.
Prayers up to Buffalo,NY! Crazy how hate like this just never goes away no matter how much time passes. But the arch in this movie is unreal and goes to show how much someone really has to go through to change
Its crazy how a black guy is more likely to kill a non-black out of racial hatred, than a white guy is likely to kill a non-white out of racial hatred, but they only make movies about le evil whites, amd when a black guy does a mass murder, they only show it for a few days on the news, and dont mention the races of the killer and victims.
How about prayers to Wisconsin? How about prayers to victims of the subway shootings? I guess those racist murderers get a pass because they were black, huh?
Another great reaction to a great movie that actually became a classroom staple in many parts of the country. Literally did a spit take when she gave us the “do you see what I’m dealing with” look. Keep them coming. :)
I will say, I think something you guys missed: part of the reason this film is so powerful is that it doesn’t outright dismiss the characters premises of hate. Derek says a lot of things in his speeches that are absolutely true of the racial dynamic in America. Yet despite this, the final message that Danny give rings true. That life is too short for hate. That's powerful. Not the dismissal of their valid feelings or portraying them as ignorant, uneducated fools(Although many if the ancillary characters are).
I’m a little late to this discussion, but you were both correct in the beginning. The black and white was both representing black and white thinking (everyone who is different from me is bad) AND the fact that it was in the past.
This is an incredible movie that I think everyone should watch at some point. It has such a powerful message. But this movie could never be made today and it's such a shame.
I'm so sorry this was such a painful watch for you two ♡ it was painful the first time I watched it too, but it is such an eye opening subject that many people need to see and understand that it happens. the ending, while heartbreaking, is very powerful. it is truly magical to see someone so full of hate overcome it with the energy of understanding and patience put into helping him.
Yeah the curb stomp scene is really tough to watch. I saw this in a packed movie theater. All sorts of folks in that theater that day. That whole theater went silent that day on that scene with that feeling like everyone was thinking what the fuck did we all just see. Good show guys keep up the great work 👏 👏 👏
its so hard to watch people react to this movie because so many people miss the point of, both sides are wrong, and in the end they are just scapegoating the real issue. the teachers comment about “Has anything you’ve done, made your life better?” is applicable to both sides of the argument. Derek is wrong, the parents are wrong. Real change comes from within. You need to be the change you want in the world, everything else is superficial sophistry. This movie is always relevant because people keep shifting blame, creating new scapegoats, and in the end, bathe in their own victimhood, real or imagined.
First seeing of this was in middle school. Haven't seen this, avoided this for a longtime. recently watched. What a movie this is. right up there with the other greats. Derek was never lost. even when he was doing wrong that spark was still there. This film addresses the hurt/hatred of humanity. every problem has a root. Finding the cause is a good place to start. Great reaction.
One hell of a movie. The performances from Edward Norton and Edward Furlong was epic. Btw everyone needs Hannah in their life. Such a caring personality. Cheers guys.
Ash is really tuned to the message of this movie. I'd like him to share whether he has ever experienced racism. I love this couple and their intelligent take on the movie.
When I was a young man I went to a catholic summer camp this movie was talked a lot about among the councilors making me finally watch it and what an amazing experience it was
@@mrf9583the movie is about cycles of violence and hate and how it is passed down. Ash and Hanna say this repeatedly. Might not be the same group, might not be racist motivated, but the cycle is the same. Someone has to break these cycles or else it keeps being passed on generation to generation. I know I’m replying a year late, but I hope this clears up the original post.
Not sure if anyone said but side note, when they're talking about Derek's dad being killing while putting out a fire, it was supposed to have happened during riots in California when protests were happening in places and the firefighters would get shot at trying to put out the fires from the riots. It actually happened (the riots).
Hannah, pretty much everywhere in America when a person catches men holding guns on the person’s property trying to steal their car at night they are within their rights to drop them. It’s what Derek did AFTER the threat was neutralized that was illegal.
That's not true, they have to be in imminent physical danger otherwise its murder. You cannot kill people over property even in Gilead aka the United states
Even this feeds into the film's message: because it's not considered a proportionate response in British law, shooting someone for stealing an object, no matter how expensive, seems shocking to a Brit, even if your natural reaction would be to sympathise with violence. It just goes to show the role culture can play in moulding people in a society.

One of the good things about the ending is it forces you to choose - Did Derek stand true to his new values and remain morally correct? Or did his brother’s death push him back over the edge?
The director's original vision was having Derek shaving his head at the end of the movie and reverting to his Neo Nazi ways. So glad Edward Norton changed the ending to leave it open ended, that way the viewer can make that determination themselves. I myself don't think Derek would revert back to the way he was, but who knows?
i think that event teach him a more value lesson his brother died bc of all this bullshit i'm pretty sure after that he gonna keep his new values and try to use it for something good
The first 2 minutes of a movie reaction is nothing but bickering about the girl drinking the guy’s water. Anyone else would have me rolling my eyes and fast-forwarding, but for some reason with these two the irrelevant bickering is hilariously amusing. 🤣
Wow, you twos reaction was RAW. The fact that you two watch movies that make you feel uncomfortable.... said it before - total respect. You two are the realest reactors. Never stop pushing your boundaries, the more you see, the more you learn. ✌️
These two talking about symbolism is hilarious. I wish they were in my high school English class because my teacher was finding symbolism is EVERYTHING! 😂
I remember one Thanksgiving, I was probably 15 years old ( I’m 43 now), we had a guy probably around 17/18 years of age, eating with us. I didn’t know him but noticed he had a shaved head and “interesting”tattoos… he looked nervous and very quiet. My mom who is Native American, my dad white, invited him over to eat with our family when they found out he had no where to go. Obviously, very hungry. Later on, I learned he was a skinhead. keep in mind… my mom knew this, she looks very Native, I’m 1 of 4 siblings, my oldest brother is very dark and sometimes people thought he was half black… my sister looks very native . Turns out that this skinhead just needed love. He became good friends with my oldest brother, fought for him… he then fell in love with a Jewish girl and married her. He had his nazi tattoo removed. I agree 100% with Ash that cancel culture is so much worse and doing more damage. We’re all broken, and it’s an opportunity to show love and forgiveness, and hope. No forced propaganda… just authentic love. I believe that media has made race relations worse! And politics never helps anything.
19:48 You're speaking facts, it is definitely fueled by tribalism and ignorance, the perpetual cycle of hateful stereotyping to justify the hate. This movie was part of my school curriculum, I've heard it has been for many schools around the world, definitely should be part of every school.
Racism is quite literally just one manifestation of tribalism-the propensity to differentiate an “in group” vs “out group”. Unfortunately, tribalism has long been part of our evolutionary history as social mammals, and it’s been one hell of a struggle to try to break away from it…just gotta keep pushing and hope we can unshackle ourselves from those sorts of instincts
@@fanta4897 I understand their utility, which is why Id never say we should abandon them; I only said I wish to see our species unshackle ourselves from it, as in that we are not under their “control”. Our impulses can and often should help guide our decisions, but we should be making those decisions consciously. And yes, there are any number of “what about in situation A with no time for reacting, etc etc”…but to focus on those, I feel, is to ignore the overwhelming majority of instances in which these instincts may come into play.
@@thefourshowflip The point of those instincts is that they take over control. If they wouldn't have that ability they'd be useless. Yes they are primarily good for situations in which you need to act fast, but honestly, even in situations when you have a lot of time, there is so much information that is being processed in your brain that instinct can help you where will would fail you. Situations where it pays of to be distrustful, more prone to anger, etc. without any normaly observable reason.
Your GF does realize the protagonist HAD to be that racist in order for the movie to have any sorta credibility, Norton killed this role, I mean look at the emotional response he’s getting outa your gal. Great movie a true gem.
He didn’t get “violated” for being friends with the dude. He got it for dissing his boy when they was dealing with other races. He joined a gang, not some boys club. He wasn’t their friend. You either roll with the gang our you get rolled. They didn’t have to rape dude but it’s a chance you take when you go against the gang.
Rented this when it first came out. EVERYONE should see this once in their life. Powerful film and brave. A true testament to help humanity. I knew this was gonna be a tough watch for you guys but this is a film everybody should watch at least once. Great movie with a powerful message that inspires great discussions. Great reaction guys.
Danny was killed because he "disrespected" that same boy that killed him earlier in the movie. He and his buddies were beating up that dorky looking white kid in the bathroom and Danny kind of stopped them by just standing up to them and being a smartass. So he was killed for something really insignificant compared to a lot of things Derek did in his past. I think it was trying to show how even a little bit of hate can ultimately destroy you. In Danny's case he lost his life because of that other boy's hate just like the men Derek killed lost their lives because of Derek's hate. Its viscous cycle of hate !
Edward Norton looks EXACTLY like my ex husband in this film, his ripped body and physical stature, tattooed, face structure, black haired goatee and shaved head (yes, my ex husband was hot AF too 🤣). But my ex was and is a good person, very kind hearted, not racist in the least (not to mention I’d NEVER be with, and especially marry, a racist), of course has no racist tattoos, and is actually of Blackfoot Tribe (Native American) heritage and he married me; I’m Jewish. But it always messes with my head a little cause they are identical in this film. Which we both happen to love, and consider an extremely important, masterful work of filmmaking that everyone should see at least once in their life. Especially young teens. So impactful and so needed. Maybe now more than ever. We cried together when we both watched it. But it still messes with me a bit when I see Ed Norton in this. I’m like “hey Ron” 😂 Edit: I also happen to believe that my ex Ed Norton should have won an Oscar for his brilliant performance in this film.
well now im curious lol... why did you guys split? coincidentally, im partially native (navajo) and im from idaho, i live south of the shoshone-bannock reservation. if i understand correctly, these tribes were closely related to the blackfoot tribes, im not sure though...
Hannah! Thank you for pointing out systemic racism without actually saying it. Nobody should make the oppressed empathize or teach it's oppressor how to treat them like their fellow kind. It should be a human right. That is a very key importance in this film that a lot of reactors ignore. It's way deeper than skin. The betrayal from your own community (Black or White) because you strive for better and treat others better, is significant within growth. It's within all of us to find at least n inch to better the human race when all hope is lost. I appreciate you guy's commentary and reaction to such a powerful film that pulls all of the stops.
Loved your reactions to this - so real and heartfelt. This, in my opinion is one of the most powerful movies ever made - hits the emotions every time. Brutal in stages. A MOVIE EVERYONE NEEDS TO SEE!
Wow! I’ve seen this movie probably ten times, and Hannah, your observation that the dad only told Derek he was proud of him when he responded positively to racism, is something I’ve never noticed. He clearly IS proud of his son for all his academic and athletic accomplishments, but the only time he actually TELLS him so is when he accepts the racist brainwashing. Extremely well-observed, Hannah. Well-done! Great reaction, both of you.

Great reaction, guys! When they were assaulting the Latina lady at the grocery, the first thing they poured on her was salsa - a condiment common in Mexican cuisine because they were assuming she was Mexican.
@@beachlife4704 LOL Considering I've have several friends and coworkers from England I can speak from experience that not everyone has heard of salsa outside of the United States and considering they asked what it was, I figured they might not be aware. Anything else?
Really glad that you both decided to watch this. It's a great one. I watched this for the first time while I was in highschool. Not FOR school, but while I was that age. It hit me hard! I'm a white guy with a white father. My dad's shown racism as I've grown off and on. He's thrown the N word around a bit here and there. I never respected that about him. I love my father. Anyway though - this movie moved me. It's a quality film that shows growth and maturity. Glad ya grasped a lot of what was spoken about and that you took the time to enjoy the film. Many would've just stopped midway through. Saw a few of the terrible things that Derek had done and said "Nope! This movie spreads hate, I'm done with it." Instead, you both stuck through and watched the entire thing and grasped the meaning behind it. Thanks for watching this and really paying attention to the film. Good stuff!
It's so great to see people watching a movie and the themes and messages are clicking in real time. Awesome reactions. You're both great at this - especially the tough films. Gonna recommend a highly-acclaimed film that is often overlooked, but was nominated for several Oscars, including Best Picture. A movie called "Runaway Train." Great action film that tackles some of the deepest themes of what it means to be a human being.
I really enjoyed this reaction, and especially how Ash ended it with “I love you.” You both got this movie so much, and Ash is right that racism exists in all kinds of races (I’m biracial) and in a way is a more modern type of extreme tribalism. I loved how both of you understand the black and white and all the different ways it can be interpreted, even with it just being the past. Beautiful reaction and I’m glad y’all left it raw and showing the emotion.

That question is important, but I always felt like it's not the only question that's important.
Which shows you how dumb the justice system is, self defense ends when you chase them all down and then curb stomp one of them.
@@JohnnyGingy
Again, that comes from emotion, not logic.
None.
You can't separate emotion from logic, you must use one to temper the other, only then can justice and mercy be in balance.
Edward Norton is one hell of an actor. In a 4 year period he played a jacked skin head lead character AND a goofy Barney the Dinosaur-type lead character and he CRUSHED both roles.
Omg, I've always wanted someone to react to Death to Smoochy but so far, it hasn't happened. I remain hopeful.
In 96' he played a man with "DID" in Primal Fear, excellent acting! Superb actor!
Fight Club may be generally overrated, but edward nortons performance is still incredible in that too
@@prometheus705 It's become trendy to say Fight Club is overrated, but that film is wide open to multiple levels of interpretation, with each level being host to people who look down on the lower academic levels (often without seeing the levels above them, where other academics are looking down on them, too).
Death to Smoochy is a classic.

I dont agree that this is what a skinhead is about, this is nazi mentality, the idea that one race is better than the other without any foundation.
@@kanem5081 agreed, very tough but good film (romper stomper)

@Jake Oh, so you DID just make all that up to virtue signal on UA-cam, just as I suspected. Well here's my retort to your anecdotal "evidence" - I've lived in America for 35 years as a "POC", surrounded by equal parts white, black, and hispanic, and ACTUAL racism between any of these groups were...few and far between, just as I stated before.
Thanks for your opinions (which are all they are) tho, Mr. White Savior. ;-)
The best part about this is that Derek isn't just some mindless monster. He uses logic to come to his conclusions.
@@mokane86 It's the same story with Norton's character.

2 sides of the same coin. You cannot love without the hate of what may take it from you.
This is the most important movie of the century. This one should be watched in every school class still these days.
Settle down.
Shame they couldn't have convinced edward norton to film the scenes to have an alternate director's cut so you could see both endings.
If the original ending had stayed, it would have been a dog whistle for white supremacists.
One of the most pointed anti-racism movies ever made. I love how you both struggled trough it together, it's supposed to do something to you. All those emotions you're going through is a sign of health. Imagine emotionally cold people watching it, it even gets to them, it has to be a strong message like this. I love how intelligent the dialog in this movie is.

Not the dismissal of their valid feelings or portraying them as ignorant, uneducated fools(Although many if the ancillary characters are).

its so hard to watch people react to this movie because so many people miss the point of, both sides are wrong, and in the end they are just scapegoating the real issue. the teachers comment about “Has anything you’ve done, made your life better?” is applicable to both sides of the argument. Derek is wrong, the parents are wrong. Real change comes from within. You need to be the change you want in the world, everything else is superficial sophistry.
Thats why amuricans are so fucked. And you dont even understand it and try to find a reason.
@@kurremkarmerruk8718 people in England are lied to CONSTANTLY by the media and it makes it worse when you have white liberals and minority RACISTS in power🤢😡🖕🖕One more thing, EVERYTHING that the evil media said about Trump was a F-CKING lie but the anti white RACIST media had to lie because there is so much money and power at stake in politics.

I watch reactions all the time.... This is one of the best reactions I've seen in a long time. Why have I just now experienced you guys? Cheers! Thanks for the journey
Chris this made my day mate, you’re a proper legend! Thank you for the love mate ❤️
I myself don't think Derek would revert back to the way he was, but who knows?
i think that event teach him a more value lesson his brother died bc of all this bullshit i'm pretty sure after that he gonna keep his new values and try to use it for something good
Honestly the best reaction channel, love you guys. keep it up.
"Has anything you've done made your life better?"
This film is a masterpiece.
Ed Norton in "Primal Fear" and "The Score" are Definitely worth checking out.
The Score looks good on paper but is crap
@@thebigbop5866 I liked it bc of Ed.
Primal Fear is one of the best acting performances ever! YOu two should check it out, Edward Norton kills that role like this one
I’m primal fear for sure
These two talking about symbolism is hilarious. I wish they were in my high school English class because my teacher was finding symbolism is EVERYTHING! 😂
😂😂 hahaha my English teacher was exactly the same!

FACTS!!
@@thefourshowflip We have those instincts for a reason. Don't play around with suppressing them. Don't underestimate their usefulness.
@@fanta4897
I understand their utility, which is why Id never say we should abandon them; I only said I wish to see our species unshackle ourselves from it, as in that we are not under their “control”.
There was so much confused discussion during this video lmao
Your GF does realize the protagonist HAD to be that racist in order for the movie to have any sorta credibility, Norton killed this role, I mean look at the emotional response he’s getting outa your gal. Great movie a true gem.

If anything, cancel culture makes people worse it just fuels their hatred I totally agree with you Ash.
I really liked and appreciated your comment Ash (the guy) at 20:00, very insightful and pure facts!
I 100% agree with you ash on the cancel culture and racism stuff :)
Love you mate 😊
He didn’t get “violated” for being friends with the dude. He got it for dissing his boy when they was dealing with other races. He joined a gang, not some boys club. He wasn’t their friend. You either roll with the gang our you get rolled. They didn’t have to rape dude but it’s a chance you take when you go against the gang.
It's because he was playing B ball w the blacks
There needs to be a movie on black racism. You see more of that now than anything.
Rented this when it first came out. EVERYONE should see this once in their life. Powerful film and brave. A true testament to help humanity. When people say you don’t learn nothing from film…..I’ve had that all my life. Our culture will never be lost…we have each other even when people try to pull others apart. All it takes is one word. A simple hello. Well done guys proud of you to take the journey. Lots of ❤️❤️❤️ to you both from Surrey.
Appreciate you my brother ❤️
In school they taught me the nature of love, but at a young age this movie taught me the nature of hate with no filter, and I've never forgotten.
It's just such a brilliant and great movie. Thank you for reacting to it and my god, the comments, discussions and observations you had were on point! 👌
You legend, thank you!!
You two are full on 100% genuine. Thank you for this reaction.
I knew this was gonna be a tough watch for you guys but this is a film everybody should watch at least once. Great movie with a powerful message that inspires great discussions. Great reaction guys.
Cheers mate ❤️
Danny was killed because he "disrespected" that same boy that killed him earlier in the movie. He and his buddies were beating up that dorky looking white kid in the bathroom and Danny kind of stopped them by just standing up to them and being a smartass. So he was killed for something really insignificant compared to a lot of things Derek did in his past. I think it was trying to show how even a little bit of hate can ultimately destroy you. In Danny's case he lost his life because of that other boy's hate just like the men Derek killed lost their lives because of Derek's hate. Its viscous cycle of hate !
Don't forget the "Symbolism"... 😂
She’s the best ❤️
The kerb stomp is one of the most shocking pieces of cinematic history …
it’s shocks you to your core! You’re never the same once you’ve seen it..
As demonstrated by the tragedy in Buffalo this weekend, this movie is just as relevant now as it was when it was filmed over 2 decades ago.
AS WERE THE RACIALLY MOTIVATED KILLINGS OF WHITES IN THE NEW YORK SUBWAY BY A BLACK MUSLIM AND AN BLM MEMBER WHO RAN OVER A PARADE OF WHITE PEOPLE KILLING 5 AND INJURING 40.
Or the incident in Wisconsin or the subway shootings. You would count those in as well, right? Racism is racism no matter the color of the person.
this movie should be mandatory in the school curriculum as well as schindlers list
"save you from communism"

Great reaction, guys!
When they were assaulting the Latina lady at the grocery, the first thing they poured on her was salsa - a condiment common in Mexican cuisine because they were assuming she was Mexican.
Lol. Thanks for explaining what salsa is because no one has ever heard of it before.
@@beachlife4704 LOL
Considering I've have several friends and coworkers from England I can speak from experience that not everyone has heard of salsa outside of the United States and considering they asked what it was, I figured they might not be aware.
WTF?!? 🙄🤢🖕🖕Are you a fake account?!? What exactly did they get right and what are they good at?!?
I really enjoyed this reaction, and especially how Ash ended it with “I love you.” You both got this movie so much, and Ash is right that racism exists in all kinds of races (I’m biracial) and in a way is a more modern type of extreme tribalism. I loved how both of you understand the black and white and all the different ways it can be interpreted, even with it just being the past. Beautiful reaction and I’m glad y’all left it raw and showing the emotion.
“Your ancestors gave their lives to save you from the nazis! To save you from communism!” Really? I thought that it was the USSR who won the WW II and was an alley of the USA)
really? i thought "winning" ww2 was a joint effort and ussr were "technically" axis and not allies, which of course gets blurred once hitler gave orders to attack on the eastern front...
Ed Norton should have won an Oscar for this role. Derek's journey through the film and how Norton portrays it is almost car crash TV as an art form. Your reactions were truly incredible to see. -subscribes-
Legally he was allowed to kill those guys in defense of his property and they were also armed. Purely the final headkick on the curb was why he was jailed. Cool reaction guys, cute couple
Depends on your state. Usually your life has to be in danger and if you walked outside when you could have stayed inside you'd probably be found guilty for manslaughter at least
All the best from Scotland 🏴 just got round to watching this. You guys are proper sound, much love. ✌
