By the way, my unit is all the way from Seoul, South Korea via eBay. Upon opening it the language was Korean and your video really helps in setting up my Samsung Gear S. Initially it works with an inserted STC SIM and make calls to another Mobily network. This makes me excited to discover more of the wonder of this device. I just hope more support from independent 3rd party developers is going to this device so that I could utilized to its full potential.

I have sort of a unique issue - my non-Samsung phone from one carrier works really well at my work facility; but of all places it doesn't work in the building I was just moved into. I wanted to get a Gear S from another carrier that does work in the building so I can still make/receive calls easily (funny thing is this other carrier doesn't work at a sister facility or at home). ...unlimited calling, texting, and 500MB of data is only $15 for the Gear S, as opposed to $50+ for swapping SIMs several times a day on my phone (on top of the amount I'm already paying my regular carrier).
Thanks for the kind comment, here in Chicago T-Mobile had a plan for five dollars per month however with Tax and Chicago 911 tax and other charges the bill would come out to $12.50 per month. I hope it works for you. I got turned off by the fact that this was not true stand alone device. I don't want to carry 2 phones with me.

Hey i have 5 brief questions. First, can I answer my watch and speak directly to the watch while my phone is in my pocket using only bluetooth? Second, can I send a text in the watch using only bluetooth while my phone is in my pocket? Third, I have an LG G3, can I download the gear s software to my phone from the Samsung app store even though my phone is not Samsung brand? When I answer the watch when someone calls me, will the watch have a built in speaker for me to hear and a microphone for me to talke?? Can I listen to music on the watch using its built-in speakers?
this watch works with Samsung phone only and not all of them. least expensive one I know of is avant. watch does have speaker and microphone so you can talk directly to it. I'm not sure if you can dictate your text messages though the watch using Bluetooth. I don't use Bluetooth headset.
this function is limited to people who have samsung phones...it does not work by its self. I since returned this watch, i think its useless without a samsung phone.

Not sure as of now. when I had it. there was no app for Facebook. many options were limited without Samsung phone. I doubt things changed. sorry couldn't help much.
There is a app for UA-cam but it's not called UA-cam I have an app that's named XO something something and it plays UA-cam vids without sim.Try typing UA-cam and hopefully it shows that app
So am I right in thinking that you can use this trick to get past the phone thing then get a nano sim and use it to text and stuff as its own phone number
if you have sim card inserted and phone number assigned to your watch you don't have to worry about range. if you don't then about 50 feet direct without any obstruction
yes it can...i had it connected to my car and was able to make and receive a call using my car system on audi a3 ...i would imagine it would work with ear piece..

If you don't have a Samsung phone, all I can think of is transferring your contacts on to your SIM card in your existing phone and then taking SIM card out and installing it in gear watch. I didn't test it though so I'm not sure that this will work. What I tested was using someone's phone and syncing is with my google account and then you could transfer contacts over; however, as soon as your watch is not able to connect to this phone, it will ask you to reset and that is when you loose all your contacts again.
You will need a phone for initial setup if you want to transfer all the contacts. That being said you could use it by it self. Apps that will work and are on the watch installed when you unbox it are: Phone, messages, settings, navigator, s health, news briefing, weather, alarm, milk, calculator. You will not get email. I recommend buying cheap Samsung phone like Samsung avant and sync it with the watch. Use your phone to connect to wifi and Bluetooth it to your watch. There is no way to transfer your contacts without a phone and no way to put music on your phone without Bluetooth. Way I use it is with avant. I just sync it once in a while.
Sorry, I fail to see what is supposed to be "enticing" about the Gear S. I have the original Galaxy Gear. And while people love to trash talk it, I love it. If it were the same cost as the Gear S, I would pick the watch I have now. For a number of reasons. First, the Galaxy S, in my opinion, is way too big. Like a bent tablet forced around your wrist. How the hell is that supposed to be anything other then a "hey look at me, I have a Star Trek computer on my wrist" poster board to anyone you come across? The Gear in comparison, is much more discreet, and at most I get a "hey, is that one of those smartwatch things that links to your phone? Cool!" #2 issue I have: where the hell is the camera on the Gear S? Ya, okay, the cameras on the watches were never great, but they were handy (in particular as barcode readers). #3 why is the Gear S waterproof only to 1 meter for only 30 minutes? In case you want to go into the shallow end? At the kiddie pool? Finally, people trash the first gen Gear, not realizing that the Gear was updated to Tizen. This means that it is running the identical hardware to the majority of other Samsung smartwatches out there. Oh, and the placement of the camera on the side of the wrist actually lets you see what you're taking a picture of. And last but not least, you can get a 1st gen gear for about $75. So... ya. unless you're a sheep, the decision should be simple.

Did you try a sim card in it to see if it could read the stored contacts off the card? could it display them, could it call and text to the contacts. have you tried a memory card with music preinstalled on it, can it diplay the music list and play it? I would imagine like me there are loads of people wanting to know if this will stand alone and with what functions working. so far all of the videos have told us nothing except tap here 25 times! 7 minutes to tell us that!
you bring up a good point. since i received brand new sim card from t-mobile i did not have any numbers/contacts on it. I didn't think of taking this sim card and say installing it on my iPhone and then transferring contacts over. as to memory card..this watch does not have one... it has built in 4gb of memory. My best guess is NO as far as music it looks to me as if you need to be connected to samsung phone to transfer any music. they have few sample songs on the watch
like i said this watch looks to be about 50% functional without a phone, thats why I returned it back to tmobile. Not too many people know about all the functions, including their own samsung employees. I can tell you that person from mobile told me that if i put my nano sim from my iPhone into this watch, he said it wouldn't work ...but they don't know much ether . he was the one that told me the watch works 100% as a stand alone device.

I just finished setup from my new device and I inserted a STC SIM on it and I call to my Mobily SIM and it works perfectly. The sound is clear and loud. That alone warrants this device to be called as "standalone" because it can work as replacement of your mobile phone. Also I tried to open the Nike Running App pre-installed in it but this is not working without the phone. So, this could be a challenge to Samsung and Nike and their affiliate developers to make this App independent from the mobile because this device is solely built to cater your active sporting lifestyle.

If you don't have a Samsung phone, all I can think of is transferring your contacts on to your SIM card in your existing phone and then taking SIM card out and installing it in gear watch. I didn't test it though so I'm not sure that this will work.
